the idea that Dennis was into Mac originally but Mac fucked it up with his big homophobic mouth… Mac’s an idiot, Dennis is sensitive and complex and blah blah… years later, Mac’s out and proud like a happy dumbass and coming onto Dennis like he hasn’t spent years shutting that shit down… Dennis resents him because he’s been living on Mac’s time for all these years… how dare Mac think Dennis would just be there with open arms whenever he decided to finally face himself… Mac is confused… he thought they would finally be something, but Dennis fucks off to North Dakota, and when he comes back to a sex doll of himself, he resents Mac more than ever… Mac’s just made it sexual, Mac just wants to pound Dennis… the less Mac tries to pull Dennis in, the more willing Dennis is to move toward him… their dynamic evens out again and Dennis doesn’t hate him anymore because he’s no longer reminded every 5 seconds that he’s a walking sex toy to his gay roommate… then, Dennis makes Mac fall in love with him from the very beginning, all over again, but this time, he’s Johnny, and it’s through a phone, at a safe distance… but Mac wants more and more until the whole thing breaks… and there they are, right back to being 2 middle-aged roommates who definitely aren’t doing it…

so dennis spent the whole of overage drinking only doing what he thinks he's supposed to find hot, based on what dee says is hot... "There was a strain there. God that's hot" "Is it?" "Married, forbidden lust" "Uh-huh..." // "Tammy was all over me, but I found the whole thing boring" "Y'know why? Because it's adult drama. That's why it's boring. Teen drama is exciting cause everything's brand new."

but he doesn't just absorb the idea of what's hot from dee, he then takes it too far, by sleeping with kerry bitaberry, something even dee finds repulsive. which reminds me of a certain someone... mac in dog track: "Lately I've been feeling no joy. I've overindulged." so they're both taking things too far, overindulging in things that don't satisfy them, things that they think they're meant to enjoy.

and when dennis isn't satisfied by his exploits, he can't acknowledge that it's him that could be the problem. whenever he talks about sex with kerry bitaberry being unsatisfying he phrases it as her failing to satisfy him "The only crime here is Kerry Bitaberry's inability to satisfy a lover." because he doesn't realise or can't acknowledge that maybe this isn't satisfying because it isn't what he wants.

and now dennis is back to saying he doesn't feel anything. "I don't feel bad. I don't feel anything" (and mac feels similarly "Lately I've been feeling no joy") he's overindulged, because what he thinks he's meant want isn't satisfying so surely the only solution is to do it again, to do it more... or maybe he'll reach a point when he realises that what he's meant to want and what he actually wants aren't the same thing.

also, on top of all of this this whole season has been more serialised than usual and is clearly building to... something. overage drinking is the first episode in a trio that directly lead from one to the next, ending with the golden bachelor live, an episode about a distinctly unlovable man trying to find love.
