Now that rumble in the chungle is on its way I do encourage everyone to watch/rewatch the only ever episode of "Dimension 20's Foundry" in which Brennan tricks Lou into helping create a full character sheet for Chungledown Bim. Lou protests the entire time and yet puts genuine thought and effort into the construction of the character, Brennan casually reveals that Chungledown is level 20, they both work together to optimise him for the shittin' function, and then Lou DMs for Brennan doing a scene as Chungledown. It's called Making Chungledown Bim, it's hilarious, and the fact that there was never another Foundry episode leads us to arrive at the only conclusion we can come to, which is that the entire show concept was made up to entrap Lou in creating his own nemesis

They're wanting to change the definition of water to see which water would qualify under the Clean Water Act...I wish I was making this up.

What this means, in layman's terms, is that not all water or wetlands would be under environmental protections, so some could legally be dumped in, scraped out of, or otherwise harmed.

Not many people talk about how deep emotional neglect hurts you.

I’m afraid to want things. I’m afraid to ask for help. I’m afraid to tell someone something if they seem in a bad mood. I can’t process when someone is nice to me. I can’t handle rejection, but my brain literally short circuits if someone gives me a compliment to the point where sometimes the rejection is better.

There are lots of overlap with emotional abuse, but emotional neglect hurts just as much. And it’s even worse that it usually goes undetected, so a lot of people can’t tell they’re being neglected until it’s too late.

Had a gentleman send me 3 messages on the secure patient messaging portal, because he ran out of characters allowed per message, explaining carefully to me how heart disease works. Because he figured I wouldn't know.

I... I went to medical school. I did a residency. I've been a doctor for a few years now. Why... why would you think I need your take on one of the most common conditions I, as a family practice doctor, help patients manage????

(It's because I'm a woman.)

Sometimes I do get patients who very clearly think they're smarter than me. Sometimes they know I'm better medically educated than they are, which makes them uncomfortable and irritable in the same way people get around car mechanics they don't trust, and sometimes they figure that since they're so much smarter than me, they must understand medicine better as well.

I don't put effort into seeming smart. I don't have to. I don't have jack shit left to prove. I talk like a hick because I was raised out here, and I like talking in a way that's familiar both to me and to my patients. I greet them with the kind of smalltalk farmers and gardeners like: wow, we finally got that rain! Is your arthritis acting up with the weather? I send them out the door: say hi to your honey for me! Get those snow tires on!

But there are patients who discover I have a master's in neuroscience, taught statistics labs, and worked at an R1 institution in research management before deciding to go back to medicine, and act like I have somehow betrayed them personally by daring to be smarter than I sound. Like, honey! That's a you problem!

Tumblr peaked that first week when we all got polls.

It was pure bedlam. Some people had them. Some people didn't.

Some people went insane, racing bugs and fish and animals and flowers. Some people contracted vanilla extract poisoning. Some people flooded the tag with Taylor Swift polls and High School Musical singalongs (definitely not my contribution to the world).

Some people made Tumblr sexymen polls. Some people had genuine questions, and some people just wanted to see how far they could push people to the brink of madness by option 10.

It was a wonderful time.

We'll never have it back.

The only comparable event is perhaps Goncharov.
