Assist Trophy fighters in Pass 2?

Still not sure if that’s actually going to happen. But if it does, I feel like we shouldn’t expect just any Assist Trophy to be promoted to playable, even via DLC.

“But stages are coded to disable certain Assist Trophies! Can’t the same be done if there’s certain fighters?“

Maybe, but that code doesn’t seem to exist in the game right now. And adding that just for one fighter seems like time the Smash team might not want to waste when there’s so many other things to deal with. Perhaps a better alternative would be a character that can be substituted (probably via the update, even if the fighter isn’t purchased - for the sake of online matches).

So we’d probably need to look at Assist Trophies who have identical characters that can fill in the exact same role. Several have someone like that. But just in case, let’s go one step further - characters that wouldn’t need to have their voice lines changed. This is probably easiest with Assist Trophies that don’t have any voice lines at all.

…With these two in mind, I narrowed it down to two Assist Trophies: Bomberman and Shovel Knight.

If Bomberman became a fighter, his Assist Trophy role could be filled in by his rival Black Bomber. If Shovel Knight, then either Black Knight or “Fish Head“ could replace his AT role. And since neither characters have voice lines, there’s no need to voice anything here.

(I would have also added Ashley here if there was anyone else in WarioWare with a similar build and powers to her, but there doesn’t seem to be…)

So yeah, my top two potential Assist Trophy fighter guesses are Bomberman and Shovel Knight. There’s no guarantee yet that any Assist Trophy fighter will happen at all in the DLC, of course, but time will tell.
