The weight of knowing Nightow said in an interview that Vash avoids taking lovers and deepening most relationships because of the disparity of time between Humans and Plants and the pain that comes from that... Yet he explicitly chose Wolfwood; a man who's time had already been stolen from... to spend the rest of his tomorrows with...
Indescribable.
I am genuinely unsure how to recover from this level of longing. This acceptance of the inherent tragedy that makes love beautiful at its core: That impermanence.
Vash spent all that time avoiding and yearning. Loving always at arms length and loving so hard to try and make up for that. Then when he finally finds someone strong enough, who loves Vash the same. Someone that has even a snowballs chance in hell of understanding any part of him. he loses him. Not immediately though, that would've been a mercy. No, Vash got just enough time to realize how close he was.
Vash got to start building a home in Wolfwood just in time to see it collapse.
It's haunting in a way most of the media around these themes has rarely managed to be to me personally. Vash is possibly my favorite example of that one quote:
"Grief is just love with no where to go."
And god... Vash has so so so much love trapped inside.

i love how vash is absolutely, irrefutably enamored with wolfwoods big-brotherly aura. like wdym wolfwood witnesses vash’s first genuine smile in 98 when he catches him watching as he gives these hungry kids two thirds of the food he has on him ?? wdym thats canon? or in tristamp, saying the gayest line in the universe (“i can see it in his eyes 😍”) shortly after witnessing wolfwood give zazie a lollipop? we find out later that zazie isn’t just some kid but vash didn’t know that!!! oh my god
i think vash would flush to his ears and burst into flames if he saw wolfwood with the kids at the orphanage. he would go into cardiac arrest watching the kids use him as a jungle gym, wolfwood trying act all tough, barking at them to get the hell off of him but breaking out into a silly grin when one of them hangs from his arm all giggly. vash gives wolfwood lovey-dovey puppy eyes later and wolfwood tells him to “quit starin’ ya spikey idiot,” meanwhile vash is wondering how wolfwood would respond if he asked him to marry him right here right now

Anyone else thinks that the audio ‘we just have one rule, NO KISSING THE MAILMAN (humanoid typhoon)’ would suit them?
Bonus: Wolfwood said yes in the end and Vash ended up crying

vash arguing with wolfwood (this time for wolfwood's bullshit) and wolfwood thinking 'oh he's failed vash he failed him so bad' the whole time with his teary eyes covered by sunglasses until he can't hold his sniffles and it's the worst thing vash ever hear yeah

aka wolfwood crying and it's vash's fault (he's gonna throw himself off a cliff now)

i can only ship vash and wolfwood with each other and this is because vash, in his entire life, is only ever living just for the sake of living and seeing the next day and moving forward for that one year he spends with rem. after that vash starts living out of obligation. he owes it to rem to protect humans, he owes it to humans to defeat knives. in every moment we see vash in the manga he is trudging towards this goal that he views as his responsibility. he loves so dearly and he forms all these beautiful connections along the way... but it isn't until wolfwood that vash really thinks, i want to see tomorrow with this person, just for the sake of it. that is so significant for vash who does so much out of that sense of needing to. with wolfwood he just wanted it. and then he loses him and enters the fight with legato and legato can see that he's just done. the man that wolfwood was to vash... it keeps me up at night

You know, I've read a lot of fics where Vash can say "I love you" to Wolfwood and Wolfwood can't, but what about the other way around?
A Vash that hasn't allowed himself that word in 150 years?
A Vash that doesn't know if he can even feel love?
A Vash that knows he doesn't deserve it, doesn't even want it?
(But oh, he does he does he does, he wants it more than anything.
And that's why he can never give it the power of a spoken word.)

What if, hypothetically, all the names Vash said when he introduced himself to Wolfwood were somehow related to his past?
We know he lays low and calls himself Eriks for a while after the julai incident. At that point however he'd already been over 100 years old. Decades of hiding from his own name in fear of getting killed or his loved ones getting in danger, might've not even been the first time he quickly came up with a fake name

trigun was insane for making a hundred-fifty-year-old character--who's both so much his age and so tragically young for how much time he's been around--watch generations of humans grow and die while he barely got to know anyone, barely got to feel the love and warmth he craved so badly--and then GIVING him that connection, for just a second, with the guy who was sent to lead him to his grave; the only mortal soldier around who was traumatized enough to keep in step with an angel; the world's least catholic priest; an altar boy who didn't believe in G-d, who carried his sins on his back in the form of a man-sized shotgun. Vash found love in the driest cracks of the desert like the most stubborn California poppy, and though it changed him and grew into his body and his lungs, it didn't last. He wanted to spend the rest of his possibly immortal life waking to Wolfwood. He wanted to spend "all his tomorrows" with a man he NEVER should've fallen for and who shouldn't've fallen for him. But it happened, and it was there, and then it WASN'T. The outlaw walked free while the executioner was hanged for loving him. And the winds kept blowing towards the future!! wasnt that fucked up!!!!!!!

[3 minutes of guitar solo]
Vash the Stampede: hi my name is Vash the Stampede. I am a hunter of Peace chasing the elusive mayfly of Love. all I really want to do is have a sandwich and a morning coffee without getting chased by bandits
some bandit: (gunshot) absolutely not. square up faggot
Vash: rats.
[gunfight]
Vash the Stampede: my name is Vash the stampede. I am a hunter of Peace chasing the elusive mayfly of Love.could I please have a sandwich
Meryl from the Bernardelli Insurace Society: how long are you going to sit on your ass doing nothing but playing games with children and doing chores for the elderly and disabled and looking after lonely youths and cooking dinner for the homeless
Vash: I've been here for like 2 days
Milly Thompson: Hi Vash!
Vash: Hi Milly
[exit left pursued by bounty hunters]
Vash the Stampede: (panting, entering a bar) my name is Vash the stampede.... I am a hunter of Peace chasing the elusive mayfly of Good L*rd what is going on in here
Hostage: mphdsfhapff!!!! mffmpphhf!!!!
Villain of the week: well if it isn't the elusive Vash the Stampede! you see it all started when I was 4 days old and you kicked me like a football and then exploded my parents to death with a laser canon and killed every puppy in a ten ile (translator's note: this is the No Man's Land equivalent of the American Mile) radius
Vash: I don't remember doing that but well I suppose you can shoot me if it'll make you feel better
Side character of the week: Are you insane? Just shoot him instead???
Vash: but my mom told me not to be mean to people
Villain of the week: (still going) And as I am now 47 years old I have finally decided to get my revenge. Say your prayers, Vash the Pisshead
[Wall explodes and reveals a motorcycle with a sexy priest on it]
[sfx: guitar with a hint of electric distortion]
Vash: is that..... Wolfwood?
Meryl who was in the background this whole time: the priest?
Nicholas Dickolas Wolfwood: (brings his fingers up to a pair of luscious lips to grab the cigarette from right between them, taking one more slow inhale before crushing the cherry red underneath his heel)(sensually cocks one of his 8 guns) Are you just gonna let this guy talk down to you like that needle noggin?
Vash: I g-
[guitar riff bumper]
[guitar riff bumper]
Vash: -uess not, since you're here to help now... (slow, warm smile) Wolfwood
Nicholas D. ranged Wolfwood: Vash
Milly who was also in the background this whole time: Hi mr priest man! isn't this lovely, I haven't seen you since the last time you spoke with mr Vash yesterday evening when you were helping him buckle all those silly belts on his pants after he had lost them somehow
Vash: On a cactus
Milly: On a cactus! Oh it must've hurt so terribly; how fortunate that Mr Priest man was there to help you
Wolfwood: Hi Milly
[gunfight]
Villain of the week: ohhhhh curses!!! CURSES!!!! I have spent my whole existence getting ready to fight Vash the Stampede but he's just too good at swallowing all my bullets!!!!!!
Vash the Stampede: my tragic dead mother would be sad if I didn't swallow everyone's bullets so I've trained diligently every morning at digesting gunpowder without dying immediately
Wolfwood: [internally: I can't believe it. All this time I've spent walking the path of darkness, reaching to a pure light that I could never grasp, and yet here is a man who's dedicated his life and his body to the pursuit of Peace. I wish he were a woman so I could fuck him romantic style. I've got a whole plan for it and everything. Whiskey, sunset, a bed with no sand in it, 6 hours. This would be fully and completely possible if only he were a woman. Unfortunately he's not, but I can still think about the what-ifs. platonically of course. Maybe if he got some good dick he'd stop being so annoying. And maybe he'd stop making me rethink my morals. I wonder if the seven drunken handies meant anything to him. Platonically]
Wolfwood: Well anyway it looks like my job is done here
Vash: (teary) Will I see you again?
Wolfwood: I don't know. And besides, whenever I look at you, I'm reminded of everything I hate about myself. You know, it hurts.
[exit Nicholas D. Wolfwood pursued by repressed homosexual desires and immense catholic guilt]
Vash the Stanned Peat: (looking out the window like a widow whose husband was killed in action) Nicholas... D... Wolfwood.......
Meryl who was in the background that entire time, yes, the whole time: shut the fuck up already
Vash: when will it be my turn Meryl. When
