In case you haven’t noticed, Chinese pop singer-actor Han Geng has been going places of late, leaving his indelible mark in different corners of the globe.

Last November, the tanned, chiselled 29-year-old Heilongjiang native, who boasts solid dancing chops, took home Best Worldwide Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Frankfurt, beating established performers like Barbadian superstar Rihanna.

He followed up that feat with another impressive victory at last month’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles, ousting fierce contenders like South Korean rapper Psy and Filipino crooner Sarah Geronimo to take home Favourite Asian Act.

Not bad at all for a relatively new entertainer who has only two solo music works to his name.

Han released his debut studio album, Geng’s Heart in 2010 and a sophomore effort, Hope In The Darkness in January.

When he’s not holding a microphone, he’s dazzling audiences on both the big and small screen.

He is one of the top A-list personalities - alongside Taiwan’s Van Ness Wu and Hong Kong’s Rain Lee - participating in celebrity diving TV show, Stars In Danger, currently showing on Jiangsu Satellite Channel (StarHub TV Channel 830) every Sunday at 10pm.

LEADING MAN Come end of the month, moviegoers in China can catch him playing the suave leading man in Vicki Zhao’s directorial debut, So Young, a heartwarming coming-of-age drama.

Diehard fans of Han would be aware that his slew of achievements did not miraculously emerge overnight. Once a member of K-pop boy band Super Junior - he went by the name of Han Kyung - his showbiz career was left in limbo when he left the group abruptly in 2009 amid a contractual dispute with talent agency SM Entertainment.

As he explained on Beijing TV’s popular talkshow Glow of Pride last December, the decision to quit Super Junior was probably the best option then, as he was suffering from serious emotional distress.

“An artiste in South Korea has no voice of his own, no right to air his own opinion. For example, you couldn’t even decide how your song should be sung,” he told host Tian Ge.

“I felt my whole existence (as a K-pop star) was very meaningless… You could say I was on the edge of depression. When I didn’t have work for the day, I would just stay in my hostel, lock the door and not go out the entire day. I reached a point when it hit me that this wasn’t the life I wanted.

“To me, happiness is not derived from earning a lot of money and being famous. It’s about the process of working with my crew and feeling satisfied upon seeing the results of one’s hard work.”

He added: “If I don’t enjoy the process, so what if I get a good result in the end? There’s no point.”

In another interview with TV hosts Dee Hsu and Kevin Tsai on Taiwanese talkshow Mr Con And Ms Csi last August, Han said he was aware of the barrage of negative comments he received after his split with Super Junior.

The dance graduate from Minzu University of China was part of the K-pop idol sensation for more than four years.

“Some netizens called me heartless and ungrateful, slamming me for not appreciating the fact that (SM Entertainment) had spent time and money training me,” he shared.

“I’ve heard harsh words like, ‘You’ve left Super Junior, you’re nothing.’

“Actually, I was mentally prepared to become a dance teacher should I fail to cut it as a solo artiste.”

As fate would have it, his talent didn’t go unnoticed in his hometown. He is now signed to Beijing-based entertainment company Le Hua.

“When passion burns and you can’t contain it any more, you have to stand out,” Han sings in emphatic fashion on his latest electropop number, Wild Grass.

hanfuckinggeng’s giveaway: Han Geng’s 1st solo concert DVD

As stated on YesAsia this product is out of print and no longer available from the publisher. So, I had an extra copy lying around so why not give it away to my lovely followers who have followed me through all my Geng spazzing no matter what. 

Certain things to keep in mind though:

This DVD is USED! I have had it for about two years and watched it plenty of times. The cover has minor scratches and the DVD as well but trust me it is in good condition, there is nothing to worry about. 

There are no subtitles included.

It is an all region DVD.

The DVD did come with a poster but, the poster will not be included in the giveaway.

[FAN ACCOUNT] 130323 (Part III) : Part I : Part II Han Geng @ Kids’ Choice Awards Orange Carpet Event

I wasn’t sure whether or not Han Geng was going to show up for the official Orange Carpet event at 4pm since he had shown up earlier around 1:30pm, but I wanted to stay anyway so that I could keep the signs there for a bit longer. I knew the place was going to be even more crowded with cameras and press for the Orange Carpet so even though I was in hiding, I wanted people to know that Han Geng had support over here and for more people to ask about him. 

Anyway, luckily we stayed because…he came back out! (I later learned that Sophie posted on weibo about coming back out at 4 but it was kind of hard keeping up to date with stuff from just my phone). Someone from the group spotted him (I think it was @jaychul again haha) amidst the sea of people on the Orange Carpet. He came from the opposite end this time and actually walked down the carpet (instead of just cutting through like earlier). 

There was a whole portion of the Orange Carpet that we couldn’t see because it was wrapped around a corner (on the side where the Ninja Turtles were), but from where we were we could see all the main press interviews that lead up to the entrance of the event center. He spent a fair amount of time talking to a blond interviewer (1st pic). I don’t think Sun Le and the makeup artist were there this time (but I could be wrong ‘cause they’re ninjas), but Sophie, the translator, and the other blond woman were there. After he finished the interview with the woman, the translator said something to him. I think she was pointing out to him that we were still there. The blond woman with the sunglasses looked at us and waved her hand back and forth to catch our attention. We started yelling “HAN GENG!” and waving frantically (except for the half of us who were busy zooming in with our cameras). He raised his head to look over to where we were, and then he smiled and waved really meekly. I want to say…..like a princess…LOL (✿◠‿◠)ノ

After greeting us, he continued to walk down the Orange Carpet. It was CROWDED. Everyone was packed like sardines so it took a while before he could really get anywhere. He walked past most of the press doing interviews though. My friend and I screamed a little when he walked past E! without stopping, lol. I don’t know what I was expecting…maybe a bizarre picture of Han Geng with a Kardashian or something ahaha….(since Khloe was there doing interviews for E!). Anyway, he finally stopped where Luke and Wyatt were (these Australian guys who host things for Nick sometimes). All three of them made some really funny expressions during the interview. I was taking pictures while my friend was recording video. Here’s the FANCAM. From what I can tell, one of the guys was asking Han Geng to act out his reaction while getting slimed (I think they were asking everyone that). After listening to the translator explain, Han Geng laughed, and the way the translator explained it must have been funny because the two guys laughed at something she said too. Han Geng then acted it out and it was hilarious. We were also laughing because we had no idea what was going on at the time and it seemed to have just come out of nowhere.

After shaking hands with the guys, Han Geng slowly made his way to the far end of the carpet where he recorded his earlier interviews. The place with dense with people now though and it was really hard to see. There weren’t too many interviewers or people from the press beyond that point so I assume he went inside soon afterward. 

That’s it for the KCAs! My friends and I stuck around for a little while longer but we didn’t have tickets to get into the KCAs and I was hit with exhaustion at that point (I could barely walk because my feet finally realized they had been standing since 8AM). We ended up getting froyo (where random people recognized that we had been there all day (￣_￣|||)) and then relaxing for a bit before getting Han Geng’s milkshake at Millions of Milkshake and running off to LAX to see him off. That’s another fan account in itself…
