A "Legend of Korra" blog (with some "A:TLA" thrown in). I like Mako. I will defend Korrasami against anyone or anything (even if I did write that post). There is no such thing as "too many Varricks!"My currently more active TV commentary blog is at tvwriteups.

Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action remake verdict: Honestly not that bad. Would watch another season if they make another one.
The good: Fire Nation machinations, shenanigans and backstories.
The bad: Some gawdawful, clunky and needlessly expositional dialogue.
Feels like the first season of a TV show that hasn't ironed out its rough edges.
I don't know if it's a case of the creatives really favoring Fire Nation characters or the fact that they could hire more experienced actors for the Fire Nation roles so they could throw more at them but the material for them just felt better. There's a lot of trauma being explored but the material for the Fire Nation characters has felt less clunky than it has for Katara and Aang.
As for the dialogue... there is this thing where even renowned shows have some pretty dire dialogue but they get away with it because they have some great actors who can hide it better, drown it with dramatic background music, put some sort of action onscreen that pulls more of the viewer's attention, or the words are spoken in some sort of British accent and somehow that's enough to distract the viewer from how much the the dialogue actually sucks.
I didn't look over all the screenwriting credits but I wonder if they were a bunch of different people and they were all told to hammer certain points of exposition in and nobody thought, "Hey, we said/showed this is that episode so we don't need to do that again here."
And there's things where you kind of forgive them for concentrating so much material on Omashu because set design production is so expensive that they have to make use of that as much as possible. The cost also goes into why Momo and Appa feel like props more than characters.
(Gotta say it's a little jarring to watch Ozai scenes but your brain is still processing it as Hiroshi Sato's voice. Also kind of amusing that a guy known for playing an "Appa" is playing Iroh here.)
When projects are rebooted or remade I like to ask why it exists. Is it just a cynical cash-grab? Is it a bunch of people who want to cosplay in a fictional world that they love? Is there a specific storytelling reason why it's being made? Is it a take from a different point of view? I appreciate this remake existing but I don't really see a creative reason for it.

I like the LOK comics, but I completely understand your critique of Mike's writing in them. I am actually excited that there will be someone new at the writing helm of the next LOK comics. What are your thoughts on the creation of Avatar Studios?
It's nice to have new content, especially if it leads people to discover the original series. I trust Bryke enough to feel enthusiastic about future content even if I found the LOK comics to be a bit disappointing.
Like I know this is Paramount/CBS/Nickelodeon trying to create more content for the sake of having more content and in the beginning I felt very cynical about corporations bringing stuff back but it's actually been fascinating to see the different approaches that have been taken. I'm happy for the Avatarverse that this trend is happening and I hope it's successful.

My niece and nephew are starting to get into the ATLA and LOK comics so I’m getting into the process or rereading them before I lend them out.
I know there’s some criticism of the comics written by Gene (notably that they appear to tell the same story over and over) but I like them a lot more than the ones written by Faith or Mike because they clearly function on two levels where you have an engaging enough plot and more subtle and believably messy stories/commentaries about colonialism.
The comics by Faith and Mike feel so cut-and-dry in comparison and Mike’s suffer worse from having stupid plots.

To be frank korrasami was a. Last minute retcon thrown in at last minute in order to claim it was planned you have to wear shipping goggles to see evidence where there was non Bryke admitted that they only asked networked when the finale was being written asami was barely in b4 and we knew makorra was endgame lok was originally just b1 doesn’t help how korrasami required having Korra be ooc and go on a trip when republic city needed her and it breaks narrative I think the ship only became 1/2
Popular because of the hate against mako 2/2
This stuff feels like so long ago that I don't remember the exact references in my head to be able to pull them up at the moment re: Bryke's comments, their intent and all the production details.
The short of it though is that Bryke told the story they wanted to tell. A lot of people saw the buildup as it was happening. I sensed something and felt that things were "weird" and all that "weirdness" cleared up in hindsight (because it was hard-baked into me at that time that they would never end the show the way they did because it's a Y7 animated series). Other folks, including you, either didn't see any or didn't see enough. I haven't really been following enough to observe how 6.5 years of other entertainment properties being more explicit about same-sex relationships affects the viewing experiences of people watching LOK for the first time to know how it reads to them.
This entire blog primarily exists to support korrasami and discuss general Avatarverse stuff. And while I have criticisms of korrasami (mostly comics-related) and some KA interpretations that feel like reaches (which I parodied here), I'm never going to agree with what you've expressed here (even the point about taking a vacation). I'm not necessarily telling you that you're wrong; just that the story didn't work for you as Bryke intended.
When I'm disappointed with the message or direction of a media property I either get creative and dive into fanfic or writing my own derivative fiction of the story to figure why I didn't find the original story satisfying or I just shrug and be all, "Eh, the creatives did what they wanted to do," and move on.
Personally, it feels like the time spent still arguing about this point could be better used elsewhere. Take your disappointment, turn it around and, whether you share it with others or keep it for yourself, make something you'll love.
#anonymous#anonymous ask#korrasami?/makorra?#I don't know how to tag these things anymore it's been so long#honestly both mako and asami are their most boring when paired romantically with korra#they're both fine when they're cooperating with adventure stuff though

Just sitting back and observing all the folks watching ATLA and TLOK for the first time...
...and feeling incredibly envious.
#before it felt like people went out of their way to binge LOK for the KA#now people are just binging it because it’s on Netflix#and the reactions are different (and pretty positive)

The Legend of Korra: Ruins of the Empire - Part Three
Story by Michael Dante DiMartino | Art by Michelle Wong & Killian Ng
Kuvira’s true nature is revealed, and the Earth Kingdom will feel the consequences!
Thanks to Commander Guan and Doctor Sheng’s brainwashing technology, all hope for a fair election in the Earth Kingdom is lost. Korra works with Toph, Su, and Kuvira to plan a means to rescue not just the brainwashed Mako, Bolin, and Asami, but everyone else caught up in Guan’s plan! With the Earth Empire potentially on the rise again, Kuvira pulls another trick from her sleeve … but whose side is she truly on?
Written by series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino and illustrated by Michelle Wong (Goosebumps: Download and Die), with consultation by Bryan Konietzko and Tim Hedrick, this is the ultimate continuation of the beloved television series!
Current release date: February 25, 2020

ghostinthishelll replied to your post “I was pretty bugged by Mako's casual lightning-slinging in S1 too, I...”
How the fuck would nutrition have anything to do with it?
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched that episode so I don’t know if it the whole nutrition thing came off the commentary track or some other BTS material. But this is just the whole “general access to a better diet” thing aiding development (baby formula, every crunchy-granola mom, etc.) and contributing to optimal performance (pro athletes, vitamin industry, etc).
#ghostinthishelll#lok 1x12#gybaw still doesn't like 'endgame' all that much#nutrition probably doesn't have anything to do with it#...just disappointing storytelling#I could do with better nutrition

And now the digital edition is up on Dark Horse’s site and app!
So I can order a digital copy of Ruins of the Empire from Amazon or the iTunes Store and have it to read right now but I can’t get it directly through Dark Horse’s site?
As tempting as it is, I’m going to wait for Dark Horse because I find their own reader easier to navigate.
