do you think brienne has a chance of being the younger more beautiful queen?
Yes. I believe she is the best candidate for the “younger more beautiful” and I’ll explain why. Let’s look at the prophecy:
“When will I wed the prince?” she asked.
“Never. You will wed the king.”
Beneath her golden curls, the girl’s face wrinkled up in puzzlement. For years after, she took those words to mean that she would not marry Rhaegar until after his father Aerys had died. “I will be queen, though?” asked the younger her.
“Aye.” Malice gleamed in Maggy’s yellow eyes. “Queen you shall be … until there comes another, younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that you hold dear.”
Anger flashed across the child’s face. “If she tries I will have my brother kill her.” Even then she would not stop, willful child as she was. She still had one more question due her, one more glimpse into her life to come. “Will the king and I have children?” she asked.
“Oh, aye. Six-and-ten for him, and three for you.”
That made no sense to Cersei. Her thumb was throbbing where she’d cut it, and her blood was dripping on the carpet. How could that be? she wanted to ask, but she was done with her questions.
Honestly, people can make a case for almost any character in the asoiaf series for the “younger and more beautiful” because it really just depends on how literal you’re wanting to interpret this prophecy. Yes, that means even a male character can be it, though I believe that’s highly unlikely. I’m going to take the prophecy pretty literally, because so far the stuff Maggy has said actually happened. However, the information is given in a way that seems to throw off or confuse Cersei and Cersei believes “beautiful” is physical beauty so it’s not too crazy to believe her interpretation is wrong.
But first, I’m going to point out the obvious with “younger and more beautiful” and how that relates to Brienne.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what makes you ship Jaime/Brienne?
Oh boy. Hold onto your hats, chirruns, and prepare ye for a novel.
First, there’s Jaime. We’re introduced to him in AGOT as basically the embodiment of the slickly handsome and charming asshole antagonist. He’s almost stereotypically villainous against the Starks, positioned as the heroes and the center of the story: it’s implied that he and Cersei plotted to kill Jon Arryn to cover up their incestuous affair, he starts brawls with Ned in the street, he pushes eight-year-old children out of windows. Just give him a few puppies to kick and orphans to steal candy from and he’s got your douchebag bases covered. Plus, one of the first things we learn about him is that he killed the old king. GRRM doesn’t waste time sitting down and giving us a detailed backstory of Robert’s Rebellion and exactly how shithouse-rat crazy Aerys was. We only learn it in bits and pieces through highly subjective narrators. Hence, as we don’t realize just yet the depths of the fantasy universe in which we’ve entered, we assume this is operating according to standard rules where the guy who broke his oath and killed the old king must be bad news (as indeed the rest of Westeros reacts to him). “Kingslayer” is attached to Jaime from the instant we hear about him, and that perception colors everything we come to learn about him. And when Ned gets whacked, with the Lannisters clearly responsible for pulling the strings, that solidifies our impression that they’re all rotten to the core, with maybe the exception of Tyrion who we like because he’s witty and cynical and worldly and clearly aware of how horrible and dysfunctional his family is. So far, still on familiar fantasy ground.
Jaime of course gets captured at the end of AGOT and spends most of ACOK offscreen. Here, however, is when we meet Brienne. From the start, she’s not what you expect: she’s not the stereotypical sexy vamp in highly impractical armor (just think of every woman in every comic book ever). She’s a fighting woman who’s NOT “sexy” and NOT indulgently accepted by the people of Westeros; in fact, it’s made clear at every turn that people mock her and judge her behind her back, and she suffers deeply for the choice she’s made to go against the prevailing societal expectation. Furthermore, nor is Brienne the Strong Female Character who has no feelings and is a stone cold badass without remorse (one of the things I hate that they changed about her in the show). She is naive, emotional, idealistic, hates killing, believes in honor and chivalry and true knights; she’s in some ways an older, armor-wearing version of Sansa, which is probably what draws Catelyn to her. She’s in love with Renly, or rather the image of Renly, because he’s what she thinks a knight and a king should be, whereas everyone else around us is expressing the opinion that Renly is basically just an empty suit of pretty armor who likes dressing up and feasts and pretending to be a king. So we know from the start that what Brienne loves is illusory, that she can’t and will never have it. And yet despite this, Brienne never wavers from who and what she is; she’s one of the most morally pure and good characters in the books, and one who truly believes (and suffers for that belief) yet hasn’t lost it entirely.
Then, of course, the Road Trip From Hell. How do I love thee let me count the ways. We get Jaime’s POV for the first time. Learning more about him, we start to feel a kind of twisted pity for everything that he’s done, how he’s blindly and completely followed his heart in wanting to be with Cersei no matter what. He and Brienne bicker endlessly and on more than one occasion actually attempt to kill each other. But then: Jaime loses his sword hand, the embodiment of who he was, and it SHATTERS him. Brienne is literally his only comfort; she’s the one who gets him to live, and he lies to save her from being raped when he doesn’t need to. Then the big reveal: the Harrenhal bathhouse scene. We learn for the first time the depths of Aerys’ depravity and exactly how he killed Rickard and Brandon Stark and that he wanted to do the same thing to the rest of King’s Landing, and we start to realize just how badly Jaime wanted to be a hero, and what a terrible position he was in. The lens of “Kingslayer” in which we’ve seen and judged everything about him begins to alter, which Brienne notices as well. At the same time, the derogatory “wench” he’s used for her begins to alter its content. He has NEVER told anyone this story before, remember, and yet he tells her. He pops a damn boner in the bath. He reluctantly leaves her behind in Harrenhal and then dreams about her (naked, I might add) and just about goes crazy getting back. Whereupon Jaime Lannister, Mr. I-Only-Love-Cersei-And-Fighting jumps his crippled ass into a fucking bear pit to save Brienne (and the “you get behind me!”/”no YOU get behind me!” will never not be my favorite).
When they get back to the capital and the aftermath of Joffrey’s death, Jaime protects Brienne from Ser Loras. He constantly notes how beautiful her eyes are, and the fact of how nice she looks in the blue dress they give her. Then he gives her a sword made from Ned Stark’s old one, to go find Sansa and keep her safe. People can quibble over Jaime’s redemption arc or what they think of it or whether it exists all they like, but the fact is that Brienne is changing him. There’s no way in hell Jaime does this before. His relationship with every other Lannister is falling apart. He can’t remember why on earth he wanted to get back here so badly anyway. Cersei keeps him at arm’s length, Tyrion is arrested for murder, he has to confess that he ruined Tyrion’s life on the orders of their father (who’s disowned him) and he’s having to fight to serve on the Kingsguard at all. Jaime thinks about how he wanted to be Ser Arthur Dayne (the hero) but turned into the Smiling Knight (the villain) instead. He’s not the asshole antagonist anymore.
Meanwhile, Brienne is questing away for Sansa, and thinking about Jaime every other damn minute, in extremely romantic/sexual ways (Renly turns into Jaime in her dream, she remembers how Jaime looks naked, she wants him to come back to her). In short, she’s changing the love of the illusion of Renly, the dream of the perfect man, into love of the real and deeply flawed man that is Jaime. He, in turn, is punching Red Ronnet Connington in the mouth for insulting her and also thinking about her every TWO damn minutes, just for variety. Brienne has become the embodiment of everything he still wants to be. And yes, I know he has a line about throwing Edmure’s infant son over the walls in a trebuchet and this is somehow proof that he’s still the worst evar!!!!! First, obviously it was a douchebag thing to say. The day Jaime does not have a douchy/sardonic comment to make, we should all keel the fuck over and die because the Others will have murdered everyone. But he’s also trying to threaten/scare Edmure into surrendering without more fighting and more bloodshed, which is what gets conveniently overlooked. When he meets Jeyne Westerling, Robb’s widow, and her conniving mother, he tells her flatly that Jeyne, with her love for Robb and her devotion to his memory, is worth ten of Sybel. With that and by sending Brienne after Sansa, Jaime is in his own way genuinely honoring the oath he made to Catelyn Stark, for the first time in his life. Of course he’s not going to be Shiny Perfect Hero about it. That’s not who he is. But he’s still trying, while remaining a sarcastic asshole with a broken heart, and I’m a huge, HUGE sucker for that character. So yeah.
As you really realize the depths to which Jaime is a deconstructed white knight, and Brienne a deconstructed “warrior maiden,” and the way in which he functions as the beauty and she as the beast, and yet how they both need each other and teach other things about the world that the other had given up on (for Jaime, Brienne gives him hope and is what he’s clinging to after his world ended; for Brienne, Jaime shows her that the world isn’t a song and helps her grow up from her childish feelings/walls). And no, they’re not a bROTP (although I respect if people choose to see it that way). I hear inklings of a Brienne/Cersei scene written by GRRM himself in an upcoming episode, where Cersei tells Brienne flat out that she knows she’s in love with Jaime. Friends don’t dream of each other naked and get boners in the bath and obsess about the color of each other’s eyes and wonder where they are all the time and jump in front of bears and etc. It didn’t start out as physical attraction, but that’s what makes their bond deeper. Jaime doesn’t see the “freak,” he sees Brienne. Likewise, Brienne doesn’t see the Kingslayer, she sees Jaime. They are the only people in Westeros who loves the other right now. Jaime has no one, neither does Brienne. Their connection is mostly what’s keeping both of them going.
So yeah. I ship them (unto the gates of hell) for all the above reasons and more, and I am well aware that one day they will kill me dead and turn me into a sobbing utter wreck on the floor (for very good or very bad reasons, as I’m trying to control my awful feeling that Jaime won’t survive the series). I both want that day to come and dread it with all my heart. Basically, I’ll die if Jaime does, but I think they’re going to have an adventure together after escaping the Brotherhood (because that’s not where either of their stories will end) and I will also die then as well.
Jesus Christ I’m not strong enough for this otp.

… the only song Dunk knew all the way through was “The Bear and the Maiden Fair.” He doubted that would do much to win over Lady Webber.

Hi Butterfly! I was wondering, do you think it's literally at all possible that LF's plan of "Kill Sweetrobyn, Marry Harry, Reveal your true identity, Get your army, Go home" will go off without a hitch, and where do you think the first kink will turn up? (My money's on "Kill Sweetrobyn") THANKS!
Do I think that the plan for Sansa to marry Lord Harrold Arryn and go back to Winterfell with the Vale army will go off without a hitch? Not in the slightest, lol.
I’d like to hope the first failure of the plan comes when Sansa turns on LF regarding Jeyne Poole. But more likely it’ll come when Ser Shadrich the Mad Mouse kidnaps Sansa to take her back to King’s Landing for the very profitable bounty.
(also, fyi “kill Sweetrobin” isn’t part of Littlefinger’s plan that Sansa knows about, it’s just “when Robert dies”, something she hopes doesn’t happen.)

I was thinking about Brienne the other day, and that got me wondering about her father. What do we know about Selwyn Tarth from the books? According to you, what kind of an influence has he had on her life?
We don’t know that much about Selwyn Tarth, but what we know is… mixed. Some good stuff, very good, but some stuff that’s sort of questionable too. Anyway, some details:
“Selwyn of Tarth, by the grace of the gods Lord of Evenfall,” is called the Evenstar, the traditional title of the Lord of Tarth, a title that goes back to the Dawn Age and the First Men (although the Tarths themselves became Andalized during their invasion). The Tarths have blood connections to the Baratheons, Durrandons, and recently to the Targaryens. (Not explained how, to our frustration.)
Tarth is called the Sapphire Isle, although it has no sapphires – it’s named because of the beautiful blue of the waters surrounding the island. It’s a pretty large island, about as large as the Arbor. Galladon of Morne was a legendary knight from Tarth during the Age of Heroes, who bore the magic sword the Just Maid – the Tarths (and others) claim descent from him.
Selwyn is 54, in 300AC. That means he would have been born in 245 or 246, and was about 13 years old at time of the Tragedy at Summerhall. If he does have a Targaryen connection, that means either he didn’t attend (too distant to be considered the blood of the dragon that Aegon V summoned for the ceremony), or was one of the few survivors. (Perhaps one of those rescued by Dunk? Ah god GRRM.) Selwyn would have been about 14 during the War of the Ninepenny Kings, and so probably was a squire to someone there.
Selwyn had 4 children – Galladon, his son who died from drowning when he was eight, Brienne, and Arianne and Alysanne who died in infancy.
Brienne doesn’t remember her mother, who must have died when she was very young. Selwyn instead had female companions, a new one every year. What’s up with that, I don’t know – maybe avoiding attachment to mistresses who might want to move above their station? Maybe avoiding love? *shrug* But he’s never remarried, even though he could have (especially because he only has one daughter).
Brienne used to believe that all men were as noble as her father. While her opinion of men changed, her opinion of her father didn’t. It’s also said that Selwyn is a good man, quoted by Randyll Tarly (whose judgement is highly suspect, but as he’s only repeating what he’s heard, we can’t consider it wrong).
Selwyn had two employees who shaped Brienne’s life – Septa Roelle, who broke her self-confidence and told her that men who complimented her were lying, the truth was in her mirror; and Ser Goodwin, who trained Brienne at arms, even sending her to butcher piglets and lambs to harden her for battle (“the lambs screamed like frightened children”, thanks Thomas Harris GRRM), and taught her that men would underestimate her abilities. Having a septa for his daughter is normal, but Selwyn allowing his daughter to learn to fight is very unusual, even with her size and build and inclinations, which tells us he must love her very much to break standards like that.
Selwyn also regularly had singers at Evenfall Hall throughout Brienne’s childhood, whose songs of knighthood and honor and heroism she memorized, also shaping her life.
Selwyn tried to find matches for Brienne, for her status of the future Lady of Tarth. First, a younger son of Lord Caron, but when she was 9, he died of illness along with his immediate family. Then when she was 12, Ser Ronnet Connington (from a formerly lordly family who should have jumped at Tarth), but he broke the betrothal when he saw her. And lastly when she was 16, an elderly knight, Humphrey Wagstaff, who wanted her to give up her martial studies and dressing in men’s clothes – when she beat him in a fight, she broke the betrothal, his collarbone, and two ribs. Regarding Selwyn, while the first two matches were pretty good, the third smacks of desperation, alas. However, after the last one, he stopped trying to marry her off. Again, Selwyn must love Brienne more than Westeros standards of behavior would consider normal.
Renly Baratheon, the liege lord of the Stormlands, visited Tarth on his lord’s progress when he was 16 and came of age. Brienne was 13 and had just had the trauma of Ronnet throwing a rose at her and calling her uglier than a sow to break their betrothal – but Selwyn wouldn’t let her hide in her room and commanded her to attend at Renly’s welcoming feast. There Renly danced with her, making her feel beautiful and graceful, and other men followed his example.
When Brienne was about 17-18, Selwyn sent her to Storm’s End to serve Renly. He must have been effusive with praises of her skills, as Renly told her (after she won the great melee at Bitterbridge), “You are all your lord father claimed you were.”
Selwyn declined to support Stannis Baratheon, although he did at least meet Davos (in a grove, at midnight) to tell him that. (Many lords refused to meet Davos at all.) He was not one of those who went over to Stannis after Renly’s death. (But Tarth men aren’t mentioned to have joined the Tyrells and Lannisters, either.)
After Brienne was captured by Vargo Hoat and the Brave Companions, Selwyn offered a ransom of 300 gold dragons, “a fair ransom for a knight”. However Hoat refused it and demanded sapphires instead (because of Jaime’s lie to save Brienne from being raped). That was something Selwyn could not provide. :(
As far as we know, Brienne has not been able to contact Selwyn since Renly’s death, nor since her rescue from Harrenhal. Perhaps she was able to get a message sent while she was confined in the Red Keep, but nothing mentions it. (And considering she’s been accused of murdering Renly, god knows what he’s heard about her.)
Aegon Targaryen and the Golden Company’s invasion of Westeros has landed on the coast of the Stormlands. According to fishermen, Tarth has fallen. What that means for Selwyn, we don’t know.
To sum up – Selwyn Tarth is a good, honorable man. (His relationship with his many mistresses is questionable, though.) He raised Brienne extremely atypically, allowing her to learn to fight and receive a knight’s training. His employment of Septa Roelle is not spectacular though, but many parents don’t seem to know the kind of things their septas are teaching their daughters (see Septa Mordane and Arya). He did his duty as a father with Brienne’s betrothals, if somewhat well below her status by the end, but allowed her to break that one and hasn’t pressed her since. He sent her with pride to Renly, and did his best to save her from Vargo Hoat. I think Selwyn loves Brienne and does all that he can with such an atypical child, far more than any typical Westerosi lord would do. (The fact that he hasn’t even remarried to have another child is very telling.) And Brienne loves him, she deeply wishes that she could be the daughter her father needs, to sing to him and give him grandsons, or a brave son to bring him honor, and is heartbroken that she can’t be either for him.
I hope that helps!

“How is it that you did not wed?” Jaime asked him.
“Why, I went to Tarth and saw her. I had six years on her, yet the wench could look me in the eye. She was a sow in silk, though most sows have bigger teats. When she tried to talk she almost choked on her own tongue. I gave her a rose and told her it was all that she would ever have from me.” Connington glanced into the pit. “The bear was less hairy than that freak, I’ll–”
Jaime’s golden hand cracked him across the mouth so hard the other knight went stumbling down the steps. His lantern fell and smashed, and the oil spread out, burning. “You are speaking of a highborn lady, ser. Call her by her name. Call her Brienne.”

Hi! Could you please clear out everything that we know happened during the Sack of King's Landing in chronological order? It would be great if you fill in missing pieces with your own opinion.... like when Ned entered the throne room were the babies already murdered (probably), so then how long did it take for injured Robert to make it to KL.. etc.? Thanks.
Well, I don’t need to fill things in with my own opinion here, I’ll just tell you what we know.
At the Trident, Robert Baratheon kills Rhaegar Targaryen in single combat, Robert’s rebels defeat Rhaegar’s loyalists, and the remainder of Rhaegar’s army flees back to King’s Landing.
Robert had taken an injury in his battle with Rhaegar, so he gives command of his army to Ned Stark, who pursues the remnants of the loyalist army.
After the news of the results of the Battle of the Trident comes to King’s Landing, Aerys sends Rhaella and Viserys to Dragonstone for their protection. He keeps Elia and her children in the Red Keep, as he believed Lewyn Martell (of the Kingsguard) had betrayed Rhaegar, and he thought he could keep Dorne loyal with them hostage.
Soon after that, Tywin Lannister, who had remained neutral and inactive in Robert’s Rebellion, appears at the gates of King’s Landing with a large host of Westerlands knights and soldiers. Varys counsels Aerys not to open the gates, Pycelle counsels the opposite, and Aerys – believing his old Hand had come back to him – follows Pycelle’s advice.
The Lannister army, upon entering King’s Landing, immediately proceeds to sack the city, slaughtering the Targaryen guards as well as the smallfolk, raping, burning, etc. Tywin commands his knights Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch to kill Rhaegar’s children.
Aerys, upon hearing the news of the betrayal, tells his Hand the pyromancer Rossart to put their plot to burn the city down with wildfire into action. “Let [Robert] be king over charred bones and cooked meat. Let him be the king of ashes.”
Jaime, who had been defending the Red Keep but could tell the situation was hopeless, sends a message to Aerys asking permission to surrender, but Aerys responds telling Jaime to bring him Tywin’s head, with no surrender allowed. Jaime’s messenger also tells him that Rossart was with the king, and as Jaime had previously witnessed them planning where the wildfire would be placed, he knows what that means.
Jaime finds Rossart about to leave the Red Keep, and kills him. He then proceeds to the throne room, where Aerys sees the blood on his sword and demands to know if it’s Tywin’s. Jaime tells him it’s Rossart’s, and Aerys loses it and runs, and Jaime kills him with a slash across his throat. (Not in the back tyvm GOT.)
As he’s doing so, Westerlands knights enter the throne room to see the last of it. They tell Jaime the city and castle are theirs, and he tells them to spare anyone who surrenders. They ask him if he wants to proclaim a new king, and Jaime says “proclaim who you bloody well like”, then sits on the Iron Throne, waiting to see who will come to claim it.
At the same time that Jaime was dealing with Rossart and Aerys, Ned Stark and the rebel army reach King’s Landing and find its gates open and the Sack going on. Ned enters the King’s Gate and proceeds towards the Red Keep.
Also at the same time, Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch are climbing the walls of Maegor’s Holdfast (which was a considerable feat considering the way it was built, including the dry moat filled with spikes), and they enter the royal apartments. Lorch finds little Princess Rhaenys hiding under her father’s bed, and when she won’t stop kicking him and screaming, he stabs her “half a hundred” times. Gregor smashes baby Aegon’s head against a wall, then rapes Elia, then kills her by crushing her head.
Ned enters the Red Keep (on horseback) and rides into the throne room to find Jaime on the throne with dead Aerys at the foot of its steps, and the room filled with Lannister men. Ned says nothing, and finally Jaime laughs and stands up, and says he was just keeping the seat warm for Robert.
Over the next few days, Jaime hunts down the other two pyromancers who had planned the wildfire plot with Rossart and Aerys, and kills them.
Some (unknown) time later, but probably also within the next day or so (as Rhaenys was still recognizable, so it can’t have been very long), Robert arrives in King’s Landing. At the foot of the Iron Throne, Tywin presents Robert with the bodies of Elia and her children, wrapped in (Lannister) crimson cloaks, as a token of his fealty. Ned calls it murder, that the Targaryens were only babies, and Robert says he sees only dragonspawn. Ned and Robert quarrel, and Ned leaves King’s Landing to break up the siege of Storm’s End, and eventually arrives at the Tower of Joy.
Hope that helps!

Robert's Rebellion and Dany's claim and fight for the throne
The fandom usually talks about Robert’s Rebellion as if everything is very clear-cut, with no ambiguities or questions whatsoever. According to many in the fandom, the Rebellion started because Aerys broke the feudal contract, and because of this, he was lawfully removed from power, and his descendants lost all claim to the throne. This point of view is also very convenient to those who want to argue that Daenerys has no claim to the throne, and that she is morally wrong to even pursue the throne in the first place. So I want to talk about how things are not really that simple.
