Story behind this photo by Photographer Paul Hernandez:
Layne Staley, August 22 1967 to April 5 2002
This image was created in 1990 at the old 2114 studio in Seattle. One of our many sessions there with AIC. I have not released this image for many reasons. Mostly because of so many other images created in a fashion I was comfortable with.
I would set the band in their places, or the band would just do it naturally (which were usually my favorite captures). This image was not set. It was a very spontaneous capture, so the framing is a little off.
We were getting ready for the next shot, however Layne needed to exit to relive himself. We were all waiting for his return and it took a while, but Layne was actually fixing his hair. He was having one of those hair days that we all have, and he couldn’t get himself comfortable with his own hair. Usually, it was Jerry that struggled with his hair. However, on this particular day it was Layne.
Finally, after waiting for a while! Layne comes running back into the studio to get back on set.
The rest of the band was a bit annoyed waiting. Layne and his high-level of sensitivity felt his infraction, and immediately jumped on set and put up his peace sign.
I didn’t wait to reset the band for the image, I just pulled the trigger.
The framing is a little off, Sean was not ready at all, and Jerry looked at me right when I hit the button (thank God). Mike was kind of ready, but was in-between a smile because of Layne's action, and his peace sign of forgiveness for his lateness of getting back on set in a timely manner.
I am grateful for these amazing moments with the band, and the endless stories that circle around my head’s memory banks to share with all the fans and family’s.
Happy tribute to everyone who could make it this year, and for those who could not make the journey because of Covid restrictions. Hopefully this image will fill their hearts, and all hearts of the fans who so love this band.
Love you forever Layne! You have left us a sea of inspiration, a mountain of hope and an endless river of desire for the music you created. You gave us a voice that we all sing in our heads and out load when no one is looking, or when everyone is looking. Your voice lives my dear brother, we are all here in celebration of you!
