W.E.L.T.001–Apophenia
April 20 – May 15, 2018
Opening April 20 6-11.59 pm
Artists: Cindy Coutant, Alan Dunning, Benoit Ménard, Duncan Passmore, Adriana Ramić, Gonçalo Sena, Lisa Strozyk, Aldéric Trevel, Steven Warwick Curated by: Théo Pozoga, Karin Schlageter, Anna Siebold Presented at non-profit-space gr_und in Berlin-Wedding, W.E.L.T.001–Apophenia asks how we experience, organise and hence construct the reality that we perceive. The accumulation of vast amounts of information has produced a sort of sleeping archive that is lingering to be unravelled. At the same time we have gone from scarcity to overabundance, from collecting to analysing, from adding on to filtering, from research to pattern recognition, from enrichment to simplification. What mechanisms come into play when we attempt to decipher and make sense of the world? How do we decode, order and categorise incoming information? And what happens when we create systems and algorithms to take over these processes? W.E.L.T.001–Apophenia is a curatorial proposal that combines artistic positions from both music and visual art whilst taking a theoretical, multidisciplinary angle. A month-long exhibition (20.04.–13.05.2018) with nine participating contemporary artists; a release on vinyl with newly produced contributions by six contemporary musicians located at the interface of experimental and techno music; as well as a publication, all constitute the body of this project. Operating independently of each other, the three outputs provide varying access points and angles to the overall theme of apophenia. The term “apophenia” first appeared in the psychiatric field in the late 1950’s to designate the unmotivated seeing of connections accompanied by a specific feeling of abnormal meaningfulness. Today the term is applied universally to the tendency to perceive connections and meaning between unrelated things, and simply refers to the human brain’s tendency to create order in chaos, meaningfulness in absurdity, ease in struggle. The most common example for this tendency is pareidolia – the psychological phenomenon of recognising human or animal features in random constellations: puppies resemble chicken nuggets, buns look like nuns, and the Cydonia region of Mars has a human face sitting on its surface. In trying to make sense of the world, we superimpose a structure onto what we discern. We produce the reality that we experience and thereby continuously produce ourselves. Today, what occurs to us is endless: we find ourselves drowning in material, in a sea of data so vast that we need technological support in order to navigate this ocean. Nevertheless, the great variety of algorithms we develop carry the interpretative frameworks of the humans who generated them and can therefore only fail in their attempt to create neutral and objective tools. Struggling with these issues, the vast array of positions presented in the book, the record and the exhibition encompasses hijacking gestures, art of assemblage, automatic drawing, derivation and shifts of meaning, illusion and confusion, oil painting, low-res 720p images as well as ultra-bright 5K video. Apophenia, the first installment of W.E.L.T, was conceived by founding member Théo Pozoga, curators Karin Schlageter and Anna Siebold, as well as research assistant Jan-Philipp Siebold. The release of the book and the record will occur at the exhibition opening at gr_und. The record features compositions from: Broshuda (DE) Buttechno (RUS) Garrett David (US) Gregor Belibi Minya (FR) Hugues Rey (FR) Steven Warwick (UK)

The Superusers - Mega Myriad Machine
The Superusers present “Mega Myriad Machine” - a sentient sculpture designed to emit sound and light beyond conventional dimensions. Featuring multiple projectors, quadraphonic sound, and a complex system of finely calibrated mirrors, this large-scale work explodes satellites of light into the gallery space, orbiting and engulfing the viewer in a newly born infinite digital cosmos. With a purposely splintered sculpture at the center of the void, layers of stuttering video projected unto its mirrored surfaces create reflections in every direction, which in turn propagate and interact with each other in a symphony of unpredictable and volatile motion. The result is a pulsating, self-multiplying, chamber-sized kaleidoscope of synaesthesia unconstrained by walls or gravity. “Mega Myriad Machine” will be open 6.-14. April 2018 at Gr_und, Seestraße 49, Berlin-Wedding. The opening and closing evenings will feature special performances from sound and visual artists reinterpreting the installation in real-time. 6. April – Vernissage – with performance from Mystech Prod & Xing Xing Xing. 14. April – Finissage – with performance from Kris Limbach.
Exhibition running 6-14 April - Thursday to Saturday 4-7 pm
Installation by Jessica Comis and Scott Sinclair. http://thesuperusers.com/

ActionScape #1
Saturday 24. April 8-10 pm
[seven performance artists] [open session] [re-sculpturing space] [visual jam] For the event, seven performance artists working within different disciplines engaging in an open session to create ActionScape #1. The structured and thematically focused interaction of instruments in a musical jam results in soundscapes. In a performance jam, musical instruments are replaced with the individual forms of performance practice developed by the participating artists. The soundscape turns into an ActionScape. Interdependent fragments of musical structures are replaced by interdependent fragments of action. This event is facilitated by ActionScape, supported by APA-B, Paersche and gr_und www.apa-b.org www.paersche.org www.gr-und.de photo: (C) Hori izhaki

Amalgama Experience/ Transmediale Vorspiel
organized by Zona Dynamic
Sat. 27.01.2018 - 7-11 pm
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ZONA DYNAMIC invites::::: AMALGAMA is a collective audio-visual experience questioning the digital now, through the formation of an amalgamated field. It is an assemblage of 10 artist outputs, sharing a ground and a volume to create an immersive space welcoming and challenging its audience. „ Hello there! Are you online? I can hear us“. AMALGAMA is a fragile, and yet durable machinery, a cloud reflecting the new era state of mind. Breeding through a digitized system, advancing like a cyborg - a collector of post human signals, which is driven by an alternating playful control structure. AMALGAMA is an operation to experiment with the complexity and value of the digital moment. A blue carpet invites the artists to come together, to occupy this territory of artistic identity and its polydimensional projection and presence. Are we empowered, when in collective to understand this moment of performance as tool to overcome opaque content of representation? Can we trust the rendered and shall we go further to transform the past into the prospective to stage the truth? Live is not live - we just project and past is not past, if we stream it now::::: Artists: Willis Anne FELL Alan Gleeson Eliza Goldox Sabrina Gricourt Sungho Haku Holger Heissmeyer Kritzkom Infinite Livez Hannah Rumstedt initiated by ZONA DYNAMIC as part of the Transmediale Vorspiel program. https://vorspiel.berlin/ www.zonadynamic.com

Gr_und hosts the French artist Alexandre Bavard, for 20 days in Berlin at the Artist run space, the following works will be exhibited under KONKRET1987.
KONKRET1987 Alexandre Bavard
Residency from the 5th December 2017 to the 22nd December 2017 Exhibition from the 22nd December 2017 to the 20th January 2018 Opening 22nd of December 2017 - 6-10 pm Mit der freundlichen Unterstützung des Bureau des arts plastiques des Institut français und des französischen Kulturministeriums / Avec le soutien du Bureau des arts plastiques de l’Institut français et du Ministère de la Culture / With the kind support of Bureau des arts plastiques | Institut français Germany and the French Ministry of Culture KONKRET1987 Alexandre Bavard “Happy New Fear” slips loosely over anarcho tongues, as Christmas trees are piled up and barricade the bank doors, crackling lightly. The wild heat of the flames doused in petrol: smoothly lock onto the pine-scented aftermath of a revolt. The sweat-dripping bankers throw bills out of the window to fuel the furnace below, calling themselves the enlightened masses - someone always has to die in a revolt, and for novelty sake let it be the oppressor, who fuels their own fires in a fit of suicidal martyr-like ecstasy: 2018. Alas, this is neither a premonition nor a fact, this is merely a mutation of a common string of words that are uttered every year by thousands of people on the stroke of midnight. In a hope, they will shed or detach themselves from a previous lived time frame, usually the past 365 days.
***
Alexandre Bavards new work implicitly rallies the notion that the human subject is always too late. The metaphorical alarm clock went to snooze and the homo sapiens overslept. Warm in slumber until they were rudely awoken, snatched from their coma’s by the aftermath of a nemesis’s dreams. Be it, global warming, rent increases, a refugee crisis, a misogynistic president or a police state: the list can go on forever, there are thousands of ways to wake the human race. Panicked and unpunctual, they run to the shower. Cold, half asleep but for a second: present. The moment the water hits their back, the revolt has just passed, as they reach for the soap, the enemy strikes, they are powerless as the trap was placed long ago. Soaping themselves off, the leftist climax shot its load (too late again). Inside the gallery, A Mummies cloaked eye rests on a blood drained Zombie’s cheek, a Doll’s pert lips and an Ape-like nose can be found jammed into Frankenstein’s fists. Glowing in radioactive colour fields, on heavy duty stakes. Thousands of permutations of mythical human horror’s fill the void, of a sanitary white cube. Surgically restyled by the artist, these figurines depict the riot that never begun. The food chain is decided by the artists god-like material complex and laymen aesthetics. A late dystopia, cooked up by the evolution of the economy and the crimes and terror of any modern democracy. Romanticism and kitsch horror is the script of Bavard’s revolt, a nostalgia for an unrealised Fan Fiction Realism is mouthed in the silent screams of the insurrection that is laid out it front of the viewer. Past, Present, Future wrapped up in one cheap resurrection, doused in sentimental sci-fi allure, the perversion of time is key to understanding his work. “Cogito ergo sum” another three-word popular phrase, romantic yet now redundant within the age of the smart object, smart city, smart world and smart sex. These words are universally: futuristic, no longer are they merely limited to the human subject - “I think therefore I am” is applicable to all. Inside his white cell; Alexandre Bavard mutters with a wry smile “ but you can change nothing” Text by Penny Rafferty Alexandre Bavard

Dark_Side of the Tour Closing
Closing: Fri Nov 17th 7-10 pm Secret Shots, audiovisual performance: 8.30 pm Secret Shots Kris Limbach and Scott Sinclair present Secret Shots - an exploration of expired formats in a search for sense between the frames. In this audiovisual performance, Limbach's super8 manipulations mutate with Sinclair's video glitchery to make a uniquely actual cinematic document existing neither on tape nor in data. As a kind of visual incineration set to a machine-dictated soundtrack, Secret Shots portrays the surface appearance of cinema, however without identifiable characters or plot resolution. In their place are only lost transmissions and scratches in time. Secret Shots a molecular view from the cutting room floor. Dark_Side of the Tour With Installations Jia-Jen Lin Scott Sinclair Exploring the dark side of our subconscious through disconnected memories and bad signals that produce pixelated tunes in the form of nightmares leads the way to bifurcations into the unknown. anon: abstraction is an objective for life patterning anon: production is what oils the gesture of the social anon: YOLO <3
*** Abstraction as a hyper material enables a meta existence of motion, CORE REMISSION will
unpack this notion through the mediums of painting and techno.
Abstraction modulates reality, yet to enact it collectively it requires a physical field. The architecture of clubs and galleries often offer this territory. A public cube is always a place of latent potentials: near visibility, against almost constraint. One could liken these sites of collectivity, i.e. the club, the gallery, the cinema to voluntary prison cells for those seeking a moment of abstract hyper density outside of their constructed reality.
YOLO often comes to mind when I think of abstraction. Thousands of novel or risky acts becoming reduced to a universal (un)unique after sound: YOLO. This neo-word, YOLO is both coltish and euphoric, as is any scene slang. The word seems to have hijacked both yellow and hello, mashing them into a hyper density gesture. A bold linguistic action. It renders both a moment of adrenaline and resignation into a cute contemporary cipher. The act requires a desire to become YOLO. Desire must bleed between life and the abstract. Knotting into turbulence, ruptures, and autonomous functioning cells to be able to exist.
We can at this point likened desire to a scripted life scenario and abstraction as the overlay of all possible realities of the plot. Eventually, the script will turn into clandestine gossip, and we all know gossip is more stimulating than life.
An exhibition or set list by its very nature is temporary and queer, much like gossip thus it remains a functional proposition. Be it a colour field or a re-verb the process of abstraction is ultimately an extension of the customary room with a view, a suicide of the now, a stage-death that just stood up for the encore.

“The majority of gallery visitors are art enthusiasts, casual visitors and vernissage guests - in other words nice-to-have visitors - and collectors and art professionals form only the minority” of the public. (M. Resch, Management of art galleries, 2015)
According to the report of GmbH 2017, more than 70% of the exhibition visitors are less interested in the presented artworks and their concepts or in an exchange with artists than in the probability to meet curators and galerislts that can push their career; not to mention the possibility of getting cheap drinks.
These facts make us, curators, think twice about which artists and works to present in a proper conceptual direction, in order to create a meaningful and coherent group exhibition.
The serious question we might ask now is what makes an exhibition more meaningful than another? According to which criteria should an art show be evaluated? The numbers of visitors? The profit of the sales of drinks at the bar and of artworks? The feedbacks from art critics and audience? The smile on the curators’ faces?
In the group show “keywords_required” we propose to artists, art lovers, collectors and nice-to-have visitors to question what motivations lead the public here and what information they receive. To evaluate the meaningfulness of the exhibition, we selected a list of conceptual keywords that permitted us to set up a sample of artists who are likely to reuse and reinterpret them, to find out if these are transmitted to the public.
This project has been supported by Fondation Nationale des Arts Graphiques et Plastiques.
Radio Broadcast by Pauline Payen of her new edition of The Voyager Radio Show, with interviews and sounds by human art-visitors.
The Voyager Spaceship has landed in a human-art gallery in Berlin, in July 2017. During the vernissage, art visitors and human artists exchanged words and sounds in the Spacheship that turned out to be a recording device. Here is the edited result.
