Clay and Lance are two sides of the same coin. (A silly ramble/analysis on Clay and Lance)

Clay and Lance are incredibly interesting, especially in terms of their lives growing up and the effects that it had on the two of them in terms of how they grew and developed in current time of the show.

(This has been mentioned to me a couple times, so why not adapt on it?)

Clay has never properly experienced familial - Paternal/Maternal love, and this is primarily due to his way of growing up. He was orphaned from a young age, barely knew his biological mother until he was at least in his early 20's and even then was told by her that they were even relatives.

the only relative Clay has ever had in his life was his uncle, who basically adopted him before he entered the academy. His only sense of familial relationship is with the person that sacrificed every single thing to protect him on the day of his graduation.

-> Obviously we don't know anything about Clay's relationship with Merlok outside of entering the academy when he was younger, so there's no depth to what he was like outside of this.

This brings me to his behaviour in ep12, his frustration with Lance when making a choice about his family. Clay has never HAD a family, so to him it feels like Lance is deciding to leave people that care about him and treat him well, he doesn't have the concept of people's relationships with their family being anything but perfect.

-> He potentially grew up with Merlok in the castle as it was somewhat connected to the tower library. The only experience he's ever had in terms of family is the Halbert family and how they're all understanding of each other and care for one another.

Now why is Lance important in this analysis? Because he's exactly like Clay, but completely different.

Lance has never experienced familial - Paternal/Maternal love. He was neglected by his parents his whole life, and hasn't build that trust with his parents that people usually build.

The only person Lance has had in terms of somebody to call family would be Dennis, who took care of him because his parents couldn't be bothered to. He hasn't had proper parents to care for his needs correctly meaning to him, his concept of "love" is being degraded by his family and being called names and seen as a disappointment.

Clay can't understand why Lance is unable to love his caregivers, the people that took care of him, and why he can't appreciate them the way that he's supposed to treat the people that raised him. He can't grasp the understanding of Lance's response to years of neglect, in a way Lance's behaviour in ep12 could be a trauma response to things HE experienced. His caretakers made him suffer for nothing, so why shouldn't they experience the same pain by suffering by being captives?

Their coin is that they both have no concept of familial love outside of what they've been adapted to. The love they've seen and grown up with is so different it's what makes them to special and important.

I hope this makes sense, and I'm glad people really like seeing me waffle and overlook this show in the way that I do..

The problem with lavashipping is that a lot of us heard about it for the first time through a negative experience. Someone commented on my GlacierShipping post about lava, someone asked “WHAT ABOUT COLE” on my PlasmaShipping post, and so on.

Personally, first time I heard about lavashipping was when I was scrolling through TikTok and an edit came up, heavily dissing all other Cole & Kai ships, and praising lava. It left a bad taste on my tongue. I’d like to think that because of that edit, to this day I can’t bring myself to like lava. This one at ‘23, when lavashipping was just starting to blossom. It’s ‘25, and I’m still stuck. I can’t help it. After that edit, I saw comments, and posts, and everything was about how lava is better than everything else, it’s the best ‘canon’ ship, anything else is trash and junk.

And I know I’m not the only one. There’s a big lot of people in this fandom who can’t bring themselves to enjoy the ship, supposedly from a terrible first-encounter.

If a lava fan is reading this, please don’t be a part of the problem. I want to like the ship, and I know others do too, but it’s difficult with how you may be treating it. If you did anything like what I said, stop.
