Q: Respond to the lecture
I absolutely loved the slides about the Devil’s and Angel’s cocktail. With this whole pandemic I feel like people thought that their stress levels would go down because of how much time they have, and while that may be true, it definitely is not true for me. I struggle with finding a new routine that balances my schoolwork as well as my mental health. Being around my house all day has been making me incredibly lazy and unmotivated to work on schoolwork or I easily forget about the assignments that are due, which in return elevates my stress levels. On top of that, if I ever do have extra time I do utilize it for writing for fun, listening to music, or anything else that helps me destress and take a break. I hope people are able to take advantage of this time to find a healthy routine of work and leisure.

Journal Entry #6.5?
Q: What is your response to the idea that storytelling can make scientific research more impactful in society?  Do you agree or disagree?
I definitely do believe that storytelling can make scientific research more impactful in society, but the problem lies in how it is impacting everyone and how they are reacting. Most ‘cli-fi’ novels or movies are set in dystopian worlds that follow an extreme plot revolving around death, violence, and chaos; where those could be true in the future (no one knows exactly), those are very much the worse case scenarios. Often times, this kind of dramatic storytelling about destruction to the Earth can cause fear and panic in its viewers. Some people might take the information and use it to change how they live for the better of the world, while other people decide to live in an anxiety filled void (those doomsday preppers) scared of everything and everyone. I think that it’s good to get the message about climate change out there, but maybe not through fictional storytelling. There are tons of other ways to tell a story: documentaries, podcasts, YouTube videos, songs, etc., I believe that those are more appropriate approaches to shedding some light on the issues with Earth’s climate. Though I do enjoy watching ‘cli-fi’ movies, I for one do not take the plots to heart.

Q: What did you learn about your teammate from their story that intrigued you?
Well for starters, my partner in this project has only showed up to one of these classes all semester (the first one) so I had no idea who he was, what he looked like, and what his personality was. We communicated through email and I was pleasantly relieved when he did in fact email me back and in a timely manner; this proved to me that my partner was a real person and he was still in the class. It was slightly awkward though because as I was creating my cartoon adaptation of his story, I realized I had no idea what to make his character look like since I had no idea what his appearance was. So, in order to avoid causing any offense, I emailed him asking him what he looked like and he responded with a picture. This interaction was a little awkward but it was okay because he understood why I needed to know. I really did not discover anything about my person except that he absolutely hated rollercoasters as a kid and I don’t know if he still does to this day. I hope one day I actually get to meet him in person.

Q: What have you learned about yourself while working on the adaptation of your childhood story?
The main thing that I have learned while working on my childhood adaptation story is that I hate the “storyboard” website. They supply the weirdest backgrounds and character options, but they for whatever reason don’t have an amusement park? Maybe I am just upset that I couldn’t use the website and I had to draw everything myself. Honestly though, seeing all the storyboards in class was exhausting and it was hard to actually pay attention to it while whoever was presenting due to the lack of dialogue and scene headings. Another thing that I have learned throughout this adaptation process is that my OCD and perfectionism is becoming as clear as day. I’ll spent so much time adjusting every microscopic detail in all of my slides so that they were basically up to par for my standards. I like my presentations to be neat, organized, and easy to follow for the viewer. I believe that I accomplished that in the end, however, it took sooooo much time to do it. I may procrastinate a big deal, but my perfectionism and determination forces me to ensure that everything looks the way it should.

Q: What have you learned about yourself in working on the childhood/past story?
Throughout the entire childhood story workshopping, I was frequently changing what story I was going to use for our actual project. Every story that I could think of was somewhat bland and lacked thrilling details and an urgent problem. Listening to my peer’s stories in class felt intimidating because it seemed like whatever they were telling was a million times more important than what I had to tell. Growing up, my childhood definitely was not boring, but it seems like nothing seriously wrong ever happened; or, maybe I just could not think of it at the time (which rings to be true as now I have millions of problematic childhood stories flooding my mind). I finally stopped looking back so far into my life and decided to think about what has happened during my “crazy freshman college experience”. Honestly, nothing adherently crazy has happened. The worst thing I could think of was how a week prior I was dangerously sick with the flu and then discovered I had bronchitis too, and then on top of that, I was moving into a single room because my roommate was awful. If that’s the craziest thing that has happened at college so far for me, I’m scared for what kind of adventures I might actually have in my upcoming years. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a cautious person, but I think I have a talent of secretly escaping problems I somehow get into. Either way, I know that I have plenty more adventures to come.

Prompt: What makes someone an American?
By definition an American is, “a native or citizen of the United States,” but I believe there is way more than just this concrete definition. Americans are easy to spot in the crows of foreign places due to their mannerisms and looks; in other words, they stick out like sore thumbs. There are many negative stereotypes that the world views Americans as: they’re all rich, they’re ignorant to the rest of the world, they’re entitled, they’re loud, etc. just to name a few. Though I can definitely apply these stereotypes to some Americans, these words do not define our entire nation. America was originally known to be “The Great American Melting Pot” (I can thank School House Rock for that one), due to the mass amounts of immigrants that fled here in hopes of pursuing their hopes and dreams. Now, the reason I say originally known is due to the surge in xenophobia in our country. Some U.S. citizens are being fueled by a hatred for foreigners/immigrants because they’re taking our jobs or posing a threat to other people; they want laws to be formed that keep them out because they don’t belong here. This is wrong on so many levels. Basically everybody who lives in the U.S. has family that came to America, aka immigrants, and to say that we can’t let anymore foreign people in is hypocritical. I might be wrong about this but maybe Americans are actually fine with current immigrants, as long as they're white European. GASP! No that can’t be right...that would mean that a lot of Americans are racist. Wow, who would’ve thought.

Prompt: Who/What influences you?
I tend to be influenced by whatever or whoever is inspiring me in that very moment. Having a diverse set of influences allows for flexibility for who you are as a person; you’re allowed to grow and change to become who you want to be. One day you might be completely enthralled by a celebrity, where you wish you could have every personality trait, fashion statement, unachievable skills that they hold, where the next day, you may see a stranger on the street that has the demeanor you wish you embodied. With influence, social class or wealth really isn’t a goal of mine to look for. Those types of people do tend to have a bigger influence on the world because of their large following; however,  I believe that individuality is an important quality to seek out. Now, claiming to be an individual in our world today is nearly impossible to do. No matter what movie plot, fashion design, solution, etc. you come up with, it always seems to be that someone has already beat you to it. Does that truly matter in the end though? We all want to be that unique individual that catches the eyes of the people all around us, but in the end, we’ll most likely be written over by someone who did the exact same thing we were aspiring to achieve. As sad as that is, it doesn’t matter in my opinion. I believe that if we take the who’s and the what’s that influence us as well as focus on our own actions and achievements, rather than how the world will see us or react to our actions/ achievements, then we can be fully successful. I like to people watch; yes that sounds creepy, but it’s actually very helpful. I feel like my identity is constantly morphing into something different everyday, and most of the times it’s because I see something I like and I adapt it in a way that suits me. I may see something on social media, an upcoming celebrity, or maybe just a student in a class of mine, and observe to see what I could possible do different about myself (not in a negative way though). Nowadays, it feels like people are scared of change so they simply don’t. I used to struggle with that, but I’ve taken some time, reevaluated myself, and discovered that change can be incredibly beneficial in the long run. Life is too short to be stuck in an identity you don’t resonate with.

Prompt: What do you hope to get out of this class?
In all honesty, this class is a requirement for all media students and that is the main reasoning behind me signing up for this class; however, once the syllabus was emailed to me my motive change completely. My mind overflowed with creative thoughts and I could hardly contain the excitement that coursed through my body skimming through the various projects that we are to complete this semester. Finally, I am actually going to create. Do not get me wrong, the required courses I had to take first semester are important to my overall education, but the majority of those classes were Gen. Eds. or introductory coursework. Through MDIA 1020, I hope to find a voice in my writing. I want to tell engaging stories that catches the eye of many and is highly acclaimed, yet, still holds an individualistic character that is my own. I know that progress is the key step to this class and that I should not expect absolutely astounding work to happen (as much as my perfectionist brain would want to happen), yet I also know that there is going to be countless amounts of struggle. All of that is okay. I need to build my confidence up so I can let others read my work and accept any feedback they give me. Can this all be achieved in one class and one semester? Probably not, but again, it’s the progress that really counts.
