The pains I need to address regarding to my midterm crit is I need to throw away some of the ideas I have been holding onto. I realize what’s been helping me is doing my user research and I need to do more by talking with more people who is a makeup artist or a makeup lover who visits makeup stores frequently. I need to think less than more and start thinking about the user experience. I’ve been ignoring how the user would use my product and been focused on the cool functions and how much I can fit many things into one system. I need to take a step back and research more. The gains I received helped me a lot of how I should start thinking about my product on another level. There’s a lot of things I need to think about and I’ve been focusing on one area which is the function but now I am going to try and focus on the form, texture, materials, usage, and going back to thinking why the user needs this.

Makeup artists working at counters in department stores struggle to keep up with sanitation of brushes, disposable applicator containers, sharing workspace, and controlling trash thrown away correctly. A solution is thought of by creating an all in one to contain inside the tables providing easy accessibility and improvement within the sanitation system.

What I noticed about a successful storytelling is having a good and loud tone of voice with confidence. There’s a beginning, middle, and end to the story without talking too much and getting straight to the point which helps. I think it’s wise to know every single information about your product instead of being vague which goes to the unsuccessful category because the sharks wouldn’t feel convinced or wanting to trust. Successful storytelling is to give facts of improvement of the product sales so the sharks can know the product is not a failure and going towards the high mark. Unsuccessful storytelling did not have an exciting title or told in an interesting way. Also, the unsuccessful stories didn’t focus on the consumers and their behaviors toward the product. A good successful story mentions how it benefits the consumer and the use that can become a big difference.
Based on the perspective human-centered design thinking, I will start to think about how I can make a change in peoples lives by reminding myself to have empathy. It is hard to design with empathy because some designs we wish to create aren’t intended for others uses but for ourselves. Some people get caught up in other values from empathy because people are selfish and it’s hard knowing that about yourself. We don’t think about thinking of others when we design something because we do not immerse ourselves in their story and block them out of our minds.

Makeup department store studio

In response to Little book of Research Ethics, the section about responsibility stood out to me because I find it very important that the designer takes in deep consideration about the effect of the product they produce that can benefit the participants for the better. What we design should never be for ourselves but for the people with good intentions and taking in information from participants should be valued and thought about instead caring about our own benefits.
For the primary research, planning and preparation done beforehand will help the client feel safe and understanding of me talking with them. I find this useful because the participants need our trusts in order for them to talk with us and being unprepared shows an untrusting person and won’t take our projects seriously. Planning appointments by calling or preparing questions beforehand shows someone came prepared, is serious, organized, and respectful of the participants time. This preparation also allows the participants to feel comfortable and not like subjects as the book mentions.
For the secondary research, listening and taking in their perspectives is important for researching online or reading books. These participants know more about the subject we are researching than we do so the designer should research context the participants mentioned instead of researching what we assume.

What is typical in this category?
Makeup artists try to have their tools and workspace clean
Applicators are safe to use
Addressed in market: Improving disposable applicators
Brush/applicator holders
Ignored: Makeup brush belts
Sanitary station (disposable applicators, tissue, makeup remover, alcohol)
Big Players: Brands unfound
To learn more, I can visit workers at my local makeup store like sephora or make an appointment with a makeup artist who owns a makeup studio.

Chez Claire éclair Boutique
coolhunter.com
This eclair boutique shop intrigues me because of the color scheme and layout that would attract tourists and locals to visit. The use of neon wire lights are also trendy and used in a lot of restaurants and stores today and something about lights attracts people to look.

Transparent Bags
I love the concept of transparency in bags or wearables even though everything is see through but the overall appearance is appealing. People like to see and love hearing about secrets because it’s a part of human nature which this kind of product can give the same feeling about hearing a secret.

Flower stem and leaves
A flower usually has leaves on either sides of the stem and I see balance when I look at the stem of a flower. Any seed planted sprouts to grow and become alive which the way the leaves position themselves in a V shape shows me the flower is alive.

Omakase Restaurant - Shanghai
The layout of using a rectangle/square shapes gives an geometric appearance and some parts of the restaurant has transparency which is breathtaking to look at.

week 1
I believe a vanity table for makeup studios are highly important compared to other supplies because the table keeps all the smaller supplies together and organized. Creating a thoughtfully well-designed table for a makeup studio is needed for easy access to supplies, display, and welcoming the customer. I am making a vanity table for both the makeup artist and customer because it’s very important for a vanity table to provide some organization units and how a table can make the customer feel of wanting to come and be excited. I believe product design has a thoughtful and loving intention behind their designs because everything is for the people to gain the best experience. Product design within a makeup studios supplies is very important because the functionality and appearance play a big key role in gaining trust from customers and for the makeup artist to look professional. My assumptions about this category is a vanity table does not have to be overly complicated because simplicity is best but the little details matter more. I see this category as a huge challenge for me because tables within any office studio have a similar shape and style which is hard to make a table look unique without over complicating it.
From HP’s desk printer article I was inspired by their response to an ‘aha’ moment by indicating they had different perspectives from materials. I think it is very important for a designer to have their own perspectives with objects or materials they come across but it is also highly important to think in different directions for a better idea to pop up.
Something I have learned from this article that I have not known is a good design should be pragmatic and emotional. Normally a designer would focus more on the pragmatic aspect of finishing a product but we do not think about the emotional aspect it can give to the users. A product can give off a sense of feeling an attraction for the users and those feelings allow them on how they use/view the product and the willingness to buy.
