Chapter One: Strange Neighbors
Masterlist
Only a few days are so engraved into my memory that I can remember almost every detail from the second I wake up to the moment I close my eyes, prom, graduation, the day my grandmother disappeared, my sweet sixteen... and the day I met Sal Fisher. It was the 18th of August, a few weeks before school started. I had woken up early, I had cheer practice that day. As I left my apartment to head to practice I saw Lisa, the building's maintenance worker, mopping the floor outside my apartment and talking to a strange boy with blue pigtails and an odd mask. When my mother woke me up that morning, she had informed me of the murder that had taken place last night, and of the fact that we had new upstairs neighbors. Mrs. Sanderson was a lovely woman and I was shocked to hear about what happened to her. I was also fairly pissed that I still had to go to practice even though a resident of our incredibly small town had just been murdered, yet my mother still expected me to walk to Nockfell High School all by myself just for cheer practice. As I left my apartment I heard Lisa say something, "You must be one of the new guys from 402, yeah? With all the excitement going on today, I haven't had the chance to stop by and say hi."
"Yeah, it's just me and my dad. My name is Sal." His voice was deeper than I expected it to be and it seemed like they had just noticed me as Lisa said, "Pleasure to meet ya Sal. I'm Lisa. I take care of this place. So if ya ever need help with anything, don't hesitate to ask. And this is our resident cheerleader, you two should be around the same age."
"Hi" "Hey" We both laughed a bit as we spoke at the same time. "I'm Starling, I guess we're neighbors now, I'd love to stay and chat but I've got to get to the school."
"The school? I thought school didn't start until a few more weeks?"
"It doesn't, but cheer practice starts before school, unfortunately."
"Oh, that makes sense, well I hope to see you around later.."
"I hope to see you around too, Sal. Bye, Lisa."
I heard a faint "Bye, Star" from the woman as I stepped into the elevator. Once I made it to the first floor, the detective gave me an odd look as I walked by but didn't say anything. He gave me an even more odd look when I walked back into the building just a half hour later. I walked all the way to the school just for my coach to tell me that they cancelled practice for the day due to the murder. I bet I'm the only person out of the entire team and coaches who had spoken to Mrs. Sanderson on multiple occasions.
The most concerning thing I noticed was Charley Mansfield, a resident of the Apartments, sitting in the back of a police car and Sal walking away from the coroner's van with a terrified look on his face. We walked back into the apartment building together and I turned to him, "I was only gone for half an hour and someone's been arrested?"
"Larry, Lisa's son, said he was there when he killed her. He distracted the police from so I could sneak into Mrs. Sanderson's apartment to find evidence so they would listen to him. She collected the same ponies that Charley did but there was a gap in the blood on the shelf where she kept them. Then I noticed that Charley had one with blood on it, so I distracted him and grabbed it with a bag Larry gave me and then I gave it to that detective and they arrested him."
"Oh my god.. We finally got rid of that creep! C'mon, let's go to Larry's."
I didn't know it yet, because he hadn't told me but that day was important to Sal too, I was the only person that he had ever met who never asked about his mask until he brought up the subject..

Prologue
Masterlist
Long ago, a tribe was formed; according to legend it began with the daughter of a ‘great owl’ and a human man. It is said that human was killed when the daughter burst from his body and was then feasted upon by wolves who were thus indebted to the daughter. Over time the wolves became human, and together with the daughter became the Grey Tribe. A hole was torn in the void containing all of the knowledge in the universe. Its effects on the human psyche are detrimental. A “Great Beast” crawled from the hole and spent the next few decades hunting the Grey’s, maiming bloodlines for generations. Eventually, an explosion in the sky leads many to think the beast has been slain, it has not. The Greys send their most adept hunter to investigate what they could see of the explosion, which was only a bright light, and the hunter returns later, only a couple hours after the light had gone out. Over the next few months, the hunter brings the Greys to a lake he found while investigating the explosion. Following a series of disappearances, the Grey Tribe discovers that the hunter has become a cannibalistic beast. They then make a deal with the beast, offering sacrifices in exchange for the beast’s permission for the Greys to continue living at the lake.
Sometime between 1663 and 1676, a seer of the Grey tribe spoke a prophecy, bringing a faction of tribe members together. Colonists settle in Nockfell and there is a marriage between Citlali Grey, the seer from the Grey tribe, and Wesley Rosenberg, a colonist, to unite the two factions. Between 1677 and 1681, the newly formed cult constructed an underground temple from the pre existing worship chambers laid within a natural cave system. In 1703 a church was built aboveground to hide the temple, and double as an indoctrination method. Another ceremonial marriage takes place, between the Grey and Phelps families. In the mid 1700’s, Citali Grey receives her final prophecy, that a “blue flam,” “child of abomination” will stand formidably against the cult, after being resurrected by the pyramids of Asintmah. The prophecy is accepted into cult doctrine, and members begin preparing to prevent it.
Fredrick and Henrietta Addison arrived from “overseas” to start a business in 1887. The last surviving member of the family created from the seer-colonist union, Alyson Rosenberg, sells her land to the Addison’s. Addison Apartments is built, expanding both the temple and its cult. In 1905, Terrance Addison was born. He is chosen by the cult to become the entry point of The Endless One. To do this, he is fed human flesh. A new prophecy from 1906, states that upon killing the Child of Abomination, a man from the sky, later believed to be Jim Johnson, will arrive to stop them, unless he can be persuaded to join the cult, in which case, he will assist them immensely. By 1917 Terrence Addison’s soul had been destroyed by The Endless One. His parents are murdered when they attempt to push against the cult. Terrance’s appearance begins to change and by 1932, he is locked in his room to preserve the cult's secret. His power grows and the cult is able to harness it. Nockfell Mills was established in 1934, it burned down three times in its 70 year existence. In 1946, Ruby was born and adopted by Alyson Rosenberg. In 1972, Lisa Garcia moved to the Addison Apartments, taking up the job of its caretaker. Zarinthkampt 42-79, now known as Jim Johnson, landed on Earth in Nockfell, in 1973. His sister is not so lucky, she disappears. Jim and Lisa got married in 1974.
In 1982, the cult tried to enlist Jim but he refused. Lisa becomes pregnant with their second child but the baby is stillborn. Jim suspects the cult is to blame. A year later the cult successfully initiated Jim Johnson in order to protect his family. He makes his way onto the Council of the cult. In August of 1984, the cult enacted a plan to eliminate those they view as possible threats to them under the Child of Abomination prophecy. They end up killing 255 children and 32 adults, all across North America. Numbered among these is Sal Fisher’s mother, Diane Fisher, killed by Kenneth Phelps when Sal attempts to pet him under the impression that he is a dog and Diane uses her body to shield her son. Sal’s face is permanently disfigured. Nockfell Mills burned down a second time in 1986. In 1987, Stacy Holmes, Alyson Rosenberg, Greg Montague, and Sandy Sanderson formed a plot to stop the cult’s summoning of the Red Eyed Demon. They succeed in prolonging it however, the plot ends in a shadow infected Luke Holmes killing his wife, his daughter, and himself within the Apartments in a fit of rage after catching Stacy fooling around Greg. Sometime between 1984 and 1987, Henry Fisher put the Fisher home on the market. In 1988, Gizmo is born, and assigned to Sal in an attempt to help him cope with the trauma of his mothers death. It is effective, and Gizmo becomes a part of the Fisher family. In 1990, the Fisher house was sold and Henry applied for a new job in Nockfell. In 1992, sometime after the 16th of August the Fishers move in to Apartment 402 of the Addison Apartment Complex and the story of Sal Fisher and Starling Rosenberg begins.
