Instagram post, photo of usb not mine (found on internet) - The mock ups use the same photo. Unfortunately I couldn't find a "free" high quality enough photo. I used this one I don't own the rights to. In the future I would've taken my own photo of multiple plugs, usbs, cables. Due to constrained time and sickness I kept this first photo.

Zine iterations - WIP My final is the top left with minor adjustments needed. The second is unfinished but type is laid out more formally. Bottom I will not use, but I will add the pill assets to my final on the back page.

final updated zine poster. I used @unplugnz and removed follow us. I used a bolder font for the fact in ICT Avant Garde. I rounded the edges as I found the sharp edges too much. I will update my mock ups with this change aswell.

Final zine concept. The reality is we are not going to get off our phones. We live in a digital world with apps that are designed to create addictive behaviours or habits or excessive use. (see research.) Making people aware of the emotions they may be feeling during online usage and why, can be a helpful way of spreading this information. With the use of a plug as a symbol it's clear that I am talking about being online and also addressing the effects it has on our brains and mental health. Through my research I discovered there is a reason we can't just "get off our phones" - apps designed to keep us scrolling limitlessly, likes, notifications that all release dopamine in our brain which can cause us to fall into a dopamine loop. From my research, my approach has become more empathetic and wanting to engage my audience through colour as well as a call to action. I want people to be able to become self aware and ask themselves questions about an issue that is obviously causing harm to our younger generations mental wellbeing.

OUTPUT 1 - poster series Based on some feedback and time constraints, I have decided to go back to my previous colour palette and designs. The time and testing in which it would take to print, screen print and photograph to put into mockups will take too long using foil. I want to be able to make the brief and assessment deadline. It also won't fully work for my zine. I am confident with these colours and feel they are working together. This is one iteration of a poster series.

Three final sticker designs (hologram) I am professionally printing the middle design for my final output. These are to stick on journals, iphones, laptops etc as a fun way to remind people to unplug from their devices specifically social media.
It's a physical object which makes it interactive and steers away from an all digital output such as an instagram page. If I had more "budget" for this project I would get all three designs printed. I would also create different custom cuts such as the inspiration I posted below.

poster iterations - to be made screen printing on black paper with holographic foil.
Tumblr media
iteration 2 - I got rid of the likes in the pills, and changed the type to IMPACT. I also adjusted the glyphs on the middle poster to be more balanced and coherent.
Tumblr media
poster iteration 3 - Posters with facts from my research. To show that our young people's mental health is most likely suffering with the research I found. I found a lot of research of mental health decline since the introduction of social media but couldn't find a lot on Aotearoa. I obviously want to focus on New Zealand, so have used research from credible NZ sources. - all APA referenced
Tumblr media
poster iteration - this is another option for screen printing. The type on the right needs to be adjusted to the same size on the left. These posters are really a clear call to action. The black would be holographic foil on black paper. The simplicity of the type on these posters is because I want to reach a particular audience - gen z and millennials. Personally I don't want to be preached to or bombarded with facts. I want to keep it as simple as possible.

Dopamine loop
Using social media can lead to physical and psychological addiction because it triggers the brain’s reward system to release dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical. Dopamine is actually a neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger between neurons) involved in neurological and physiological functioning.
It’s the same chemical our brain releases when we eat, have sex, or gamble—or use our smart phones. For some users of social media, their brains may increase dopamine when they engage with Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram or other social media platforms. When a user gets a like, a retweet, an emoticon notification, the brain receives a flood of dopamine and sends it along reward pathways. It feels wonderful, but it also acts to reinforce our need to satisfy the feeling next time.
This cycle of motivation, reward, and reinforcement is a “dopamine loop” that gets users seeking, looking, craving rewards and more of them. One well-known social networking service that hosts short videos fostered such high levels of addiction among its users the company added an addiction-reduction feature to the app.
Simeone says using social networking sites as a coping mechanism to relieve stress, loneliness, or depression may suggest an issue, as well. “Compulsive users of social media tend to isolate,” Simeone says. “They’re chasing that constant reward system, which can lead to interpersonal problems, such as ignoring real-life relationships, work or school responsibilities, and one’s physical health.
“In turn, they feel bad about their behavior and to escape that undesirable feeling, they double-down on their social media behavior for relief. When social network users repeat this cyclical pattern of relieving undesirable moods with social media use, the level of psychological dependency on social media increases.” What’s your risk of developing a social media addiction?
Let’s face it, social media usage is a habit for most of us. There’s no harm in our habits if they don’t harm ourselves or others. In reality, few of us are addicted to social media.
But we have to start somewhere. Try these small and realistic changes:
Stop using your phone as an alarm. Instead, use an actual alarm clock. It’s just as handy and can help you stay off your mobile device before bed.
Turn off notifications. Do you really need Twitter and Facebook updates throughout the day?
Monitor the amount of time you spend on your device. Apps like “Screen Time” and “Digital Wellbeing” can help you control your daily usage. Set a reasonable time frame and stick to it. Maybe only one hour on your phone after dinner? Try a morning routine without any technology. Start with just a couple of times a week.
Stick to one device at a time – don’t use your phone while watching TV, using an iPad, or computer.
Try not to revert to your phone in awkward social situations. And don’t check your texts while in the middle of a conversation.
Above everything else: Make sure you aren’t answering a quick text or using the web when you drive. A break from technology allows us to re-evaluate unhealthy habits and identify where we can cut out its unnecessary use. It also empowers us to live fully in the present moment, self-reflect, and slow down to enjoy life. Are you addicted to social media?. https://www.leehealth.org/health-and-wellness/healthy-news-blog/mental-health/are-you-addicted-to-social-media#:~:text=The%20'dopamine%20loop',in%20neurological%20and%20physiological%20functioning.
