The Board of the Glen Rock NJ Dog Park (GRDP) in conjunction with the Friends of the Glen Rock Arboretum (FOGRA) is honored to be the recipient of a $4315.50 “Roots For Rivers” reforestation grant awarded by The Watershed Institute in partnership with the Nature Conservancy and Sustainable New Jersey. The grant supports efforts to undertake floodplain restoration initiatives and will be used to enhance park landscaping by planting tree and shrubs along the north and west fencing. The project will also include signage for visitors to learn about the new native plantings and their importance in the community. The new plantings will help reduce the effects of flash flooding and storm water runoff while providing more habitat to our local wildlife. Planting Days are scheduled for the end of March. Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to participate. Service hour confirmations are available upon request. Thank You to Glen Rock Dog Park Board Member Lisa Schor Babin, FOGRA Trustee Thomas Scerbo and Thielke Arboretum Stewardship Director Jean Epiphan for spearheading this effort and congratulations on their success!
Glen Rock Dog Park Vice President Lisa Schor Babin notes, “The Board of the Glen Rock Dog Park is so proud to learn today that we are the recipient of of the Roots for Rivers Reforestation Grant. A huge thank you to Tom Scerbo and FOGRA for their ongoing partnership and support. When a community comes together, great things happen.”
FOGRA Trustee Thomas Scerbo adds, “It’s great that we will be receiving a grant from the state to landscape the area around the dog park. The trees and shrubs will provide a natural screen between the park and the ball fields on Upper Faber. In the process, we will be greening up the area with native plants as a way to beautify it and to protect the watershed. A great community effort to improve our town. “
The Glen Rock Dog Park is an eco-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, community oriented, ADA accessible, multi-generational canine recreation park dedicated to the 9/11 Search and Rescue Dogs. Girl Scout Gold Award recipient Michelle Hillock initiated the project in 2013.
The park, located at 350 Doremus Avenue in Glen Rock NJ, was officially dedicated on January 1, 2020 and is open to all. The construction of the off-leash park was the sole responsibility of the GRDP non-profit organization. The park will contribute up to 30 points towards Glen Rock’s sustainable New Jersey municipal certification.
As of January 2020, there were over 1000 dogs registered in the Borough. All dogs entering the park must be licensed and current with vaccinations.
For additional information or to donate to the continued enhancement and maintenance of the park, please visit http://www.GlenRockNJDogPark.org.
