Christmas Shopping
Author: @wordsfromthesol Pairing: Dick Grayson x Reader Summary: You find yourself caught in the middle of a mall heist and who’s there to save the day? The one and only Nightwing, who severely needs to work on his communication skills Taglist: @zphilophobiaz @malfoys-demigod @pricetagofficial Word Count: 1.2k A/N: Look guys, I’m not dead! Just super busy and ended up taking an unscheduled break.
You couldn’t believe that you did this again. You promised yourself after the insanity you had to endure last year you would finish your Christmas shopping early this year. Once again, you failed to live up to that promise and were now in the mall on December 23rd, wading through the crowds of people as the store clerks were yelling the ten-minute warning. Only ten minutes to find what you needed, and you didn’t even know what that was. As your eyes were frantically searching up and down the shelves, you suddenly flew into the shelf and eventually, the ground.

Character A tilting Character B’s chin up to get a better look at their face and the evidence of the fight. A delicately thumbs away the streak of blood by B’s mouth, saying nothing as they examine it. After a brief pause, B’s heart skips a nervous beat as A looks them dead in the eyes. Their voice is quiet and tense, their anger barely restrained.

pls omg ilyilyily i literally get so excited for your comments!! i actually didn’t really like this piece. the pacing felt off and i feel like i could’ve fleshed it out better. but i think that just came with me having a more refined and harsh look on my work nowadays haha. but im SO glad that you enjoyed it and that my writing is vivid to you!! i just want my writing to feel as pretty as poetry :))
“am i your lock screen?”
“you weren’t supposed to see that.”

author’s notes. someone please tell me how to write a kissing scene!! i feel like mine always get so repetitive. wow i’m trying to write kissing scenes like i’ve been kissed before smh. also this has been in my drafts for a bit, so sorry it kinda sucks :(
Tumblr media
“Am I your lock screen?” you asked as you peered over Dick’s shoulder, spotting a picture of you and him at the beach last month: you had a bright grin on your face while Dick smiled shyly next to you. His face was flushed, but you couldn’t tell if it was your doing or the sweltering summer day. A smile formed on your face as you recalled the heat of the sun kissing your skin. You could almost taste the watermelon you had that day.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.
“Embarrassed, pretty boy? If that’s the case, then setting me as your wallpaper isn’t the best way to go about it.”
Dick gulped and moved his phone away from your sight. “No- I just…” He fidgeted, unable to answer. He shifted away and looked off into the distance: at the TV, the coffee table, anywhere but you. You furrowed your eyebrows at his behavior. You weren’t expecting to make him flustered.
Dick Grayson didn’t get flustered.
A sigh left your lips as you pulled your phone from the back pocket of your jeans. The screen lit up and Dick’s eyes widened. Before him was photo of you and him cuddled next to each other during a movie night. Artemis had taken it while you were dozed off and sent it to you the morning after. You had quickly saved the picture, not that you would ever tell her that.
Dick’s lips pulled into a smirk. “So, I’m gonna make a wild guess here, but hear me out: you like me back.”
“Hm, where’d you get that idea from? I was just trying to show you how cute I looked in this picture.”
“And I think you looked very cute.”
You tilted your head down in order to hide the growing smile on your face. Dick’s hand came up to your chin, turning your head towards him. His eyes flickered to your lips and you froze as he leaned into you, just about to close the gap. His hot breath on your skin sent shivers down your spine. Your own breath hitched. Now you were acutely aware of your own heartbeat, and you were sure that Dick too could hear it pounding.
“Go out with me?”
You nodded eagerly before moving that tiny inch left forward. Dick’s lips were slightly chapped, but they were warm, so invitingly warm. It was a quick touch, not longer than a second. But it left your head spinning. Staring into each other’s eyes, you gave one another giddy smiles. You would have to thank Artemis later for giving you that last push in the right direction.

dizzying kisses
notes: i really didn’t know what to name this lol. i’m trying a different writing style right now, so i hope you like it! also i really, really love dick grayson. i think i’ll have my shorter works in lowercase (that is my regular style) and my longer ones with normal capitalization. as always, feedback is appreciated!
word count: 0.2k
warnings: none
there’s something about the way he kisses you that is dizzying. his lips mold to hug yours perfectly, like putty taking shape to an object. dick’s kisses are sugary sweet and addictive. they leave you in a daze, chest pounding, and begging for more. you wonder if he feels it too, if your kiss affects him in the same way his does to you. you assume they do because he looks just as breathless as you do, and starved. you want more of him, and he doesn’t hesitate to tell you he needs you too.
“i love you.”
the words leave his mouth so suddenly, making you doubt if you had heard him correctly. your lips are agape, eyes wide. your heart feels like it’s about to explode. he says it again and there’s nothing hesitant about it. he says it with utter confidence and assurance. you hate yourself for not saying anything and leaving him hanging, but the words were caught in your throat and your mind was going a mile a minute.
your silence doesn’t concern him. he knows you feel the same way and he caught you by surprise. he just wanted you to know. “you don’t have to say it back, it’s-“
“i love you too.”
he grins widely and pulls you closer. he can smell the warm scent of your perfume as his head falls into the crook of your neck. it steadies his racing heartbeat and pulls him closer to sleep. the corners of your lips quirk up as you’re lulled to sleep by the rhythm of his heartbeat.

ice cream cake

word count: 1.7k

An agonizingly long mission had taken up the majority of the day. Everyone was exhausted out of their minds and had decided to call it a day as soon as they made it back. But you were still up, foot tapping the tile of the dimly lit kitchen with a small ice cream cake in front of you. A pack of candles, which were purchased before you realized they’d make the cake melt even quicker than it was already, had been lazily tossed on the counter beside it. You had snuck away from the others after the mission, running to the first store that was still open this late, purchasing one of the only cakes they had left.
Your arms laid crossed on the cool counter as a sigh left your lips. “Happy birthday to the loneliest Young Justice member,” you muttered, spoon going in to cut the confection.

“i think you might be my soulmate.”
@obrienevans asked. “please the 8 of fluff”
word count. 0.4k
warnings. mention of alcohol, intoxication
Tumblr media
The bitter taste of cheap beer on your tongue made your nose crinkle. Luckily, you were still mostly clear headed, but you wanted nothing more than to plop down on the bed behind you. The feeling of Dick’s eyes on you made the hairs on your neck stand. You dug through his drawers, grabbing the first pair of clean clothes you laid eyes on. His blue eyes bored into you, memorizing every inch of you and watching every little movement.
“I think you might be my soulmate.”
The words dripped from his lips like honey, slow and slurred. They’re so sickeningly sweet to the ear that you can’t help but develop a sweet tooth for it. Your eyes widened for a second before you pushed the drawer closed. A small scoff fell from your mouth as you turned to face him. “How many glasses did you have?”
“Enough to admit I’m in love with you.”
You sighed, throwing the clean shirt and shorts in your hands at his lap. “I’m gonna get you some water and look for some advil.” You scurried out of the room and made a beeline to his medicine cabinet in the bathroom.
Did he mean that?
Of course not, he’s just wasted, you reassured yourself as you dug through the cabinet. There were various bottles of pain killers and other medical supplies in case a night of patrol went wrong. You found the medicine and got a glass of water from the kitchen.
Shuffling back into his room, you found Dick lying on his side with half lidded eyes. A soft yawn made its way out of his mouth. He looked more like a sleepy child about to fade away into a dream rather than a man harboring the responsibility for the lives of everyone else. You set the glass of water and bottle of advil down on his nightstand. You turned to leave when you heard Dick call your name.
“Stay with me?” he asked, almost pleadingly. His eyes stared right into yours. They were like oceans, the kind you’d see on those beach ads on TV. But no matter how clear they were, they still hid the rawness of his heart. Though the alcohol in his system loosened his grip on his emotions. “Please?”
His words tug at your heartstrings, pulling you towards him. You’re in his arms in an instant and encompassed by the warmth of his body. It’s the same kind of tender feeling you’d get being under the shade of a tree on a summer’s day, entangled in your lover’s arms. You began to drift off as the doubt in your mind at his confession lessened. And all you can do now is drown in his affection, in his deep ocean eyes. Even if it’s for the briefest of moments.

places where people kiss: in the rain
word count. 1.7k
warnings. extremely cliché kiss sjfdknkd
author’s note. i have spent WAY too much time on this thing for it to not be good... and rewritten it like 3!! times!! and i literally have to wake up early for a google meeting and im queuing this at 3:02 am rn
Tumblr media
Dick didn’t have the slightest clue as to what drew him to you. Maybe it was your eyes, full of life and curiosity. Or had it been that smile of yours? God, that smile. It swirled butterflies in his stomach. It was blinding, but he couldn’t help but stare straight into it. If your smile was the sun, then he was Icarus. His feelings came with ease, becoming a complete free fall for him. Around you, he was warm as though he had been wrapped in a blanket of love. You sent him the same exhilarating rush that falling from a trapeze did when he was younger. Yeah, how could he not fall for you?
Even sitting in a quaint coffee shop across from you made him almost forget how to breathe. His eyes fell upon your lips and he wondered how they would feel against his. How would you kiss? Would it be soft and chaste, or passionate and needy? There was one thing he knew for sure though; it would be all-consuming. There was a faraway look in your eyes—all thoughtful and he wished to know what was going on in that pretty little head of yours. Your elbow was rested on the table as your fingers went to tuck a piece of stray hair behind your ear absentmindedly. The action made him silently wish it was him who pushed back your hair instead.
“What?” you had asked him, plush lips slightly agape.
He blinked, snapping out of his lovesick trance, hand coming up to hold his chin. “Huh?” was all that left Dick’s mouth, too caught off guard by you to form a better response. He wanted to slap himself for getting caught looking at you like a total creep. What were you doing to him?
“You’re staring.”
“Oh,” he laughed, scratching the back of his neck. “Sorry.”
You giggled. Dick’s heart leaped out of his chest at the sound, and all he could think was that he was the reason for it. He wanted to be the reason for your laughter for the rest of time. “It’s okay, you’re not so bad on the eyes either, Grayson.”
Dick choked on his coffee, which he quickly masked with a cough. But the look on your face told him you had noticed. His ears turned a soft shade of pink. “I wasn’t—“
“I’m just teasing you, Dick. You should be very familiar with that by now—I didn’t think I could make you flustered though.” An amused smirk played on your pretty lips.
He pushed away the desperate thought of needing to kiss you to the back of his mind and rolled his eyes at you. “I’m not flustered.” Though the clear heat in his cheeks did nothing to aid his argument. He watched as you pressed your lips together in a line before taking a long sip of your drink, nodding along. He could almost hear the sarcastic quip from the look in your eyes.
Your head cocked toward the window, watching as dark gray clouds quickly enveloped the sky. “It’s going to rain.”
“When’s it not?”
His eyes met yours, an unamused look on your face from his comment, though it had soon softened. “Fair enough. Do you want to head out now so we don’t get caught in the storm?”
Not really, Dick thought. He’d rather spend all the time in the world with you. He nodded in agreement anyway. The two of you stood up and he smoothed down his clothes with his hands. After leaving a nice tip on the table, you quickly made your way out of the building. The rain began sooner than you had predicted and he felt you grab his hand, pulling him with you as you run to the nearest cab. He could only hear the loud thumping of his heart, which drowned out the sound of the pouring rain and the taps of your footsteps against the wet concrete. Once you stopped at an empty taxi, he held open the door for you to slide in.
“Aren’t you getting in?” you asked him, looking puzzled by the way he stood in the rain, continuing to get soaked by the second.
He paused for a moment. He had planned to hail his own cab, thinking this was where you parted ways. Quickly, he rushed in next to you after hearing the cries of the taxi driver, upset that the leather in his car was getting wet. He didn’t have time to feel bad though, because his eyes trailed towards you as you began to spout off his address. Your clothes were practically soaked through, and the hair you probably spent a considerable amount of time on was stuck messily to your face. You still looked gorgeous.
The warmth of your presence enthralled him. It felt like sunshine on his skin, and he felt himself leaning into you, almost going in to close the distance between you in the back of this dingy cab that smelled a lot like little tree air fresheners. Yeah, he would rather not have his first kiss with you be in here.
You cleared your throat under his watchful gaze. Your eyes went to examine the water on your shoes before moving up to watch the little cat figurine mounted on the dash endlessly beckoning. He noted the way your hands fidgeted, switching the position of your legs every minute or so. Still, in this state of nervousness, he’s in awe of you. He wondered what would make you feel this way. Him, perhaps? Dick hoped so.
“Want to get dinner with me tomorrow?” he asked softly, words leaving his mouth without a second thought. Though his heart began to pound.
“Sounds like you’re asking me on a date,” you teased, not paying much attention to him as your gaze was now set on the car window. His eyes followed your index finger which absentmindedly traced the raindrops sliding down the glass.
“What if I am?”
He watched as your finger came to a stop. Worries instantly filled Dick’s mind. Had he fucked up? Was he wrong about all the signs? Maybe you hadn’t felt the same, making him look like a complete idiot to you and the taxi driver sat in front. A hundred different scenarios about how you’d let him down ran through his head. You were too nice and sweet to be mean about it. Instead, you would gently tell him you viewed him as a friend. Kindness was one of the things he loved about you. The thought nonetheless hurt.
There would be no turning back now. Things would be too weird after this. You wouldn’t want to see him again. Those many years of friendship? It was all thrown out the window. All because of a silly little sentence he uttered. He could hear Jason snorting at him, overly amused at the thought of playboy Dick Grayson being turned down. Nice going, Grayson.
The wait for your response felt like an eternity. An eternity of accepting the inevitable "no." His heart was hollow, and he wanted the world to swallow him whole. The bitter taste of the coffee he had came back. It overwhelmed the sweetness he felt with you earlier. He thought he got used to its harsh taste. But it came back with a foreign feeling, one he didn’t particularly enjoy. Rejection, he supposed. Dick doesn't think he could ever have another coffee again after this.
You blinked, seemingly processing his words. Maybe coming up with a carefully articulated rejection as to not hurt him? He prepared himself, ready to face rejection face first.
“Then,” you drew out, “I would say yes.”
The words reached his ears with such saccharine sweetness, almost akin to the taste of the raspberry filling of the bismark he enjoyed earlier. It was almost too good to be true, and for a second, he asked himself if it was real. He wondered if you were a hallucination and if you’d disappear if he blinked. But the beat of his heart calmed down, the breath he had been clinging onto was released with relief. He grinned widely, feeling like the luckiest person in the world right now.
His hand began to move on its own accord, almost reaching your delicate fingers before coming to a halt as the taxi driver’s gruff voice filled the air. The car came to a stop. Your head turned towards the man and you told him you were being dropped off at a different place, briefly mentioning you’d pay for the entire trip much to Dick’s objection. You quickly brushed him off. Repay me with dinner tomorrow, you had said. He reluctantly agreed, not wanting to cause the cab driver any more grief than he had already. He opened the car door, glancing back at you with a shy smile and a quick goodbye before sprinting towards his building’s doors.
But his eyes couldn’t help but linger on the shadow of you in the back window. It steadily disappeared from his sight, leaving him to continue getting drenched in the cold rain. The thought of you left a giddiness in his heart. Dick was just about to reach the cover of his building before he was tugged around, a pair of lips meeting his own feverishly. He soon melted into the sudden touch once realizing it was, in fact, you. Dick could taste the lip balm you had applied earlier in the day. The scent of it was strong as if you had reapplied it just to kiss him. Had you?
There was also the faint taste of the drink you had consumed in the coffee shop. The taste alone had never appealed to him before, but Dick thinks he could have it every day if it was off your lips. He felt your hands reach up behind his head, pulling him further towards you. His hands instinctively flew down to your waist, holding you like it’s the only chance he’ll get—still not sure if his mind is playing tricks on him or not.
Still, he’s drowning in you, and to him, it would be a death he’d gladly accept.
He yearned to have your lips touching his again, the second you broke away. His forehead pressed gently against yours, a soft reminder that you were real and right in front of him.
You exhaled, whispering as softly as the pattering of the rain, “See you tomorrow?”

this was written months ago but oh my god
this!!! this is it people!!!
i LOVE that you had them eat mangos omg- like they just remind me of my mom bc she’d always cut them for me to eat (and still sometimes does LMAO) those are just such sweet memories (literally- the taste of mangos is superior!!) and eating them with dick just gives me so much dopamine??
the way they’re just casually having a conversation while eating mangos makes the scene feel so real?? like when dick says, “builds chara- you did not kick my ass, i’m pretty sure i would’ve remembered something like that.” he cuts off in a way that feels so natural, and a lot of the time fics don’t reach that level where you feel immersed in the scene—like you’re actually there.
but how their little mannerisms are described, and you can see the way their feelings towards each other changes like here in this line, “his glares at your arrival turned to glances at your exit”. it makes my heart explode!! there’s so much softness and emotion packed into this short piece- i wish i wrote like this!
For the question thingy, could you do 'But I thought you hated me?' with Dick? If that's ok. Thank you!
warning(s): language
Saturday’s summer nights were like any other. Rain would pummel in heated argument against the windows, drowning out the sounds of shoes ruined in the muddy Blüdhaven puddles that lined the streets, all before dissipating moments later in hurried avoidance. The distant sounds of tires slipping and splashing down soaked roads, rushing somewhere before the blue. Summertime left the city unbearably muggy with this almost routine, or whatever that odd place between want and need was called.
But it’s not often you would find yourself shoulder-pressed to another, Dick Grayson, as you both hunched over your small kitchen sink eating mangoes. You felt your teeth were going to ache after each bite with how sweet it all was.
With working and nighttime crusades, it was always hard to find a balance you both existed in. Nights like these made you both recount your way here, how lucky you were for the stars to kiss you both. You and Dick were conversing easily, leisurely sliding into territories unspoken from memories locked away yet held so fondly, like the skin of a mango being gently peeled back—guts and glimmer and all.
“Not gonna lie,” you started again after a brief silence of mouths full, biting your lips clean of summer, “but I thought you hated me for those first few months.”
“I’m literally standing here in your tiny kitchen eating mangoes with you over the sink, and you thought, at one point or another, that I hated you?”
You chuckled at his sentiment and feigned wound. “It was a while ago, Dick. We’ve changed a lot since then.”
(It wasn’t untrue; you knew both you and Dick had a lot of growing to do since that first accidental night in the alley nearly three years ago. How brash and angered you both were, at the world and, wrongly, at each other.)
You returned your attention to the mango in your hand, taking a bite from it. The juice slipped from your fingers and traveled down your wrist—sour and bitter and sweet and warm as it traced maps on your time-worn and scarred skin; though this sensation of summer mixed oddly with Dick’s stare. Your truth might have ruined this.
“I didn’t hate you though. I don’t think it’s even possible,” Dick said. His voice was quieter, softer—whispers that were meant for no ear.
“I know that now.”
Still, now was a tricking thing to know, to learn, to love. You and Dick did have a rough start; working together on cases during those long Blüdhaven nights was not exactly pleasant. It was all business and grave seriousness early in your meeting him. But somewhere between the harsh encounters on rooftops and the unplanned team-ups, love seeped through and warmed you. You don’t really know when your off-handed snarky remarks at his misses slowly turned to worried banter at his reckless injuries, or when his glares at your arrival turned to glances at your exit.
His voice wavered through the warm air, breaking you from your thoughts, “Did you really think I hated you?”
“Dick,” you said softly. You knew he wanted an answer; you saw the memories of punches thrown and kicks at the years-old wind play and rewind in his eyes as he searched your eyes for some sort of hint, some sort of glimmer of forgiveness (had he always looked so tired?). He wanted to absolve this guilt, but he’d know if you lied. “A little bit, yeah.”
Dick’s shoulders slumped a bit, yet still weighed with something. He looked off, lost in thought with your words. You knew he was thinking deeply, letting himself know this guilt of what was in the past forgotten and searching ways to forgive himself as you’ve already forgiven him. The cooling feel of the mango against your fingers was starting to send chilling pangs through you.
“But,” you continued, “I don’t think too much about it, I know it was a pretty shitty time for everyone and with everything that was happening. We kind of let the moment run its course with us. I said and did some shitty things back then too; but we’re here now, aren’t we? And I like it here, I like being here with you.
“Plus, I kinda liked kicking your ass every once in a while, builds character.”
“Builds chara- you did not kick my ass, I’m pretty sure I would’ve remembered something like that.”
“Your memory must suck then,” you joked as you nudged Dick’s shoulder playfully.
And he nudged your shoulder right back, smiling to himself for almost making you drop your mango in the sink. You and he fell into this kind of lighthearted ease, teasing each other through gentle shoves and unspoken words bitten into golden fruits; a symphony of its own laughter and smiles breaking the heat of summer and replacing it with a newfound warmth that filled you both whole in the kitchen—these are better times.
Through all the unashamed laughs and unbreakable smiles he awakened within you, you found it hard to believe how much more you can love him—there simply isn’t enough love in the world. Yet, looking at him as he tried to hold in his warm boisterous laugh with mango smirks made you think all the world’s love was really with him—with his dark curls that sang with his movements, with his rich and warm eyes that would glisten star-like when he caught you staring too long, with his charming smile that warmed and cooled you—all along. You wanted to stay there like that, speaking a language of laughter with a closeness that felt like it would never end while that Blüdhaven summer felt years away.
“Do you think we would’ve met if it wasn’t in that alley?” Dick asked once your shared laughter died down.
“Yeah,” you said as you bit into the mango that you had nearly forgot was in your hand.
“You sound so sure, you barely thought about it.”
“What’s there to think about? The way I feel with you right now? That can’t be coincidental.” Seasons can change and years can easily pass before your eyes, but you knew that this moment was inevitable, summer fruits bearing heavy in their green. Even if it was years in the making and countless nights with bloody and bruised skin, it was worth it all to be standing in this kitchen with him.
Dick bit his lip to hide his growing smile, turning away to face the sink lined with its fallen mango juice. “Yeah, I think you’re right.”
