I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?
Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?
Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

"We'll fix it in post" is a phrase from the film industry, but it is inherently funnier when it's spoken by a writer because--tragic--you are also the post-production team.

if any of y'all see posts about house m.d on tumblr and think "I wanna watch that" you need to know that you can skip episodes. i would argue skipping certain episodes is vital to having an enjoyable house experience. house md is one of my favorite shows and has been genuinely important to me as an autistic queer chronically ill cane user. it also revels in it's main character being offensive for the sake of being offensive with that special early 2000s flair. if you care about the concept of fatphobia you will be unable to have a uncomplicated relationship with this show. for every earthshatteringly homoerotic hilson moment and every profoundly accurate disabled scene we the viewers must pay in some insane misogyny. that's just how it is on this bitch of a show

If a worker who isn't the owner says ANYTHING similar to "I'm not really supposed to do this but-" and then does something that helps you, under no circumstances inform the business, including through reviews. You tell them that the worker was polite, professional, the very model of customer service and why you like to go there. You do not breathe a word of the rulebreaking.

me following my roommates around the apartment: and then in s1e7 ‘what are little girls made of,’ spock questions chapel’s ability to recognize her fiancé, roger, over an audio call, and she implies that if he were engaged, he would be able to recognize that person’s voice without a doubt. so then after kirk beams down to the planet to see roger, he’s held hostage by a droid who imitates kirk’s exact voice to spock when he calls, and spock becomes concerned for the captain because he doesn’t sound right. and then while kirk himself is being cloned, he ensures that the clone will be different from him by thinking unkind thoughts about spock. when the clone boards the enterprise, spock realizes that he’s not the captain by the way he speaks to him (despite having no prior knowledge that any cloning was taking place on the planet) and beams down the planet to find the real kirk. and then it turns out that chapel herself wasn’t actually able to tell that her own fiancé’s voice was a clone, but spock-
