Built on Sand: A Black Sails Creative Event

Hi folks! Black Sails may be a smallish fandom, but it is packed full of incredible talent and creativity. Built on Sand is a project intended to support that creativity by providing inspiration and connection to anyone creating art centered on the show. There are three main parts:

A Prompt Based Art Fest: People will be able to submit prompts or ideas for art they would like to see here. The prompts that have been submitted can be viewed here, and artists can claim and create content based on them through the creator sign up form. The intention is for this part to be as straightforward and free of barriers as possible. Anyone can submit prompts (you don't have to be a creator as well) and "Art" is defined in the broadest possible terms.

The Built on Sand Discord Server: A place to talk about the show that has burrowed into our brains and ruined our lives (and we're doing a group rewatch!) Want to yell about your project? Need somewhere to ask about obscure details of the show, or random boat nerd facts? Come join us! No pressure to engage more than you're comfortable with. All are welcome, creators and enjoyers alike, the only requirements are that you be over 18 and have some interest in Black Sails fanworks.

This Tumblr: which will be used to promote the work of artists who are involved, and to generally draw attention to the wealth of fantastic art in the fandom. Follow for lots of art reblogs of both old and new content, as well as event info!

Event Status: Initial Sign-ups Live

With the summer months approaching, there are only a few things on our minds: sun, sand, the beach, and shirtless naval aviators! So we figured, why not combine them?

This event, open to all ships and ratings, looks to turn up the heat with a fic and art exchange that adds a twist to the typical prompt assignment to ensure everyone gets to write or draw what they want! (more on that in the rules/info) 

To participate in this exchange, you must be 18+ and be prepared (as a writer) to post a completed fic of at least 2k words. All works will need to have a summer theme or connection, from a sweaty game of beach volleyball in July to a character reminiscing on a hot summer romance in the depths of winter and everything in between!

10 Movies I Love

1-3. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Perfect in every way.

4. The Dark Knight

I used to be a massive Christopher Nolan & Christian Bale fangirl and this movie was the reason why. Between Bruce Wayne looking fine as hell, oodles of identity porn and an oppressive soundtrack, what's not to love?

5. Up

My favourite Pixar movie, to the point where I dressed up as old man Carl for Halloween one year. Adventure is out there!

6. Atonement

Haunting. The soundtrack has been playing in my head for the entire time I've been drafting this post.

7. The Prestige

Rivalry, obsession, revenge. I don't love Nolan's fridging of female love interests, but IMO this is up there with The Dark Knight.

8. Pan's Labyrinth

Beautiful and creepy, featuring nuanced female characters with agency.

9. Arrival

I don't usually do sci-fi stories because a lot of them feel concept-driven instead of character-driven, but Arrival was so touching, so alive.

10. Crazy Stupid Love

The reveal scene is so fucking funny. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are also way too charming together! (I may have watched all their interviews promoting this movie lol)

Ice hums quietly as he runs his hands up and down Maverick’s trembling body, delighting in his moans and whines. The man sits back on his heels, taking in the view before him, and reaches out to drag his nails down his partner’s inner thigh.

“Please,” a whine, barely louder than a whisper, escapes Maverick’s lips as he shivers under Ice’s touch.

“What did I tell you about begging, sweetheart?” he asks as he raises back to his knees and shuffles closer to Maverick, pressing himself against his back.

“Don’t.”

“Yeah, because I’ll give you exactly what you need, baby.”
