For them, Success is Predetermined!
“Being a giver is not good for a 100-yard dash, but it’s valuable in a marathon” (P. 20), says Adam Grant in his book “Give and Take – A Revolutionary Approach to Success”. He conveys a message through this book by differentiating three reciprocity styles called takers, matchers, and givers and explains how this reciprocity impacts professional advancement.

Adam Grant pointed out, “Giving, taking, and matching are three fundamental styles of social interaction, but the lines between them aren’t hard and fast. You might find that you shift from reciprocity style as you travel across different work roles and relationships” (P. 14). Takers are the ones who preoccupied with receiving more than they give, whereas Matchers, follow quid dro pro method and are particularly attuned to perceived equality in relations. And Givers are like “others-focused” and never think about any positives or negatives that occur while helping others and try to create space for not only themselves but also for the people around them. They are generous in sacrificing their skills, knowledge, ideas, and time for other people. Although all three reciprocity styles have their respective advantages and disadvantages, givers are the ones who face pessimistic outcomes at the workplace across different occupations and are least successful in terms of earning power and dominance, however, they are predetermined to success. A person might behave in all the above three reciprocity types depending upon their situation.
On the other hand, networking plays different roles for takers, matchers, and givers. The writer mentioned, “Ultimately, I want to argue that while givers and takers may have equally large networks, givers are able to produce far more lasting value through their networks, and in ways that might not seem obvious” (P. 29). Networking becomes stronger by giving rather than receiving. Givers always add values to their networks by encouraging connections and sharing their expertise with others and create better reputations and more valuable networks. Takers network strongly, however, they give importance to more prominent and influential people. And as they grow in their profession, they try to ignore them in the end, whereas matchers try to network with the people who are similar to them. In the initial stages, they behave well and when they face any betrayal from others, they get ready for revenge. When someone implements reciprocity as behaviour in their network, it has downsides.
There is another statement, “success involves more than just capitalizing on the strengths of giving, it also requires avoiding the pitfalls” (P. 115) that explains further about the types of givers. Some givers turn out to be exhausted and unsuccessful, while others end up passionate and productive. Grant called them failed givers and successful givers respectively. The successful givers are not just other-oriented than their colleagues but also self-interested and they are as ambitious as matchers and takers. On the other hand, failed givers are selfless and have high other interests and low self-oriented. Grant says that if takers are selfish and failed givers are selfless, successful givers are otherish. They care about helping others and tend to give further no matter what they get in return.
To conclude, Grant suggests that in this corporate world, the best way to thrive is to make sensible choices to give rather than take. Givers have a unique way of approach in terms of networking, influencing, collaborating, and evaluating. Although all three reciprocity styles are successful, givers’ success is distinctive as they provide a state of contentment and satisfaction to other people. And all three are necessary to succeed, nevertheless, selflessness makes work pay for itself. Therefore, if we care about the value of giving not just for our benefit but also in our profession and for others, we will thrive with utmost satisfaction and happiness.

Ethics, Equity and Diversity - the three important factors at a workplace
Work culture at the companies is one of the most prominent things to consider. This includes diversity, equity, inclusive leadership, professional ethics etc. In a company, treating everyone with an inclusive mindset is essential as it showcases the environment at the workplace.
In an article of “World Economic Forum”, it was mentioned “the coming together of people from different ethnicity with different experiences in cities and societies is a key driver of innovation”. Businesses that recognize the significance of diversity at the workplace can perform better both economically and socially. When employees from various backgrounds work together, they will have an opportunity to learn new things that helps to produce better quality products and essential services. Having a diverse workplace will also encourage an affirmative working atmosphere where the employees will grow and succeed.

When a company is a winner in diversity in the workplace, it will expand its ability and the employees will gain various skills, and experiences. They will have a capability to work together and learn from each other which will further make them well-rounded employees. And when people with diverse backgrounds work together on tasks, an innovation takes place in the team and within the corporation, innovation will come from the differences that occur when teams are diverse. When they pay attention to many different proposals from different types of people, they will have the opportunity to combine ideas to create a new services and products.
In another article form Forbes, the writer pointed out “on a fundamental level, equity and equality are both points along a longer continuum of diversity and inclusion”. Yes, employers should ensure equity in their workplace and create policies and workflows thinking about issues related to gender, language, race, sexual orientation, and disability. They should create an environment that welcome everyone without having any discrepancies. This includes choices such as ensuring the interview panel is from diverse background, providing comprehensible workspace etc. companies which care ethics entice more skilled and talented employees and it helps forming a fair work ecosystem.
The other important factor at workplace is Professional ethics. Author Kimberlee Leonard in his article called “Professional Ethical Behavior in the workplace” mentioned, “being a professional requires more than wearing a nice suit” because ethics is not only how we think or behave but also the character that showcases our integrity. Everyone has a capability to create, change, and ruin their own character. A person with integrity, behaves morally in every situation and will respect his/her commitments. Character not just for person, but also pertains to companies. A company with positive character is trustworthy, acts sincerely, and never breaks its promises. The ethical behavior plays a prominent role in workplace for various reasons. When a company values ethics, both employees and customers trust the organization, which further built its reputation.
To conclude, in the interactive media field, both employers and employees should consider the three above mentioned factors called Diversity, Equity and Professional Ethics that helps everyone grow as a professional and in achieving success.
