So I’ve been working on this for a while, and I just wanted to share my ideas to the fandom because well, who better to understand a Mean Girls AU than the Mean Girls fandom?

I do plan on eventually having this be written out, and will likely post it at one point. Without further ado, introducing…

The Spider-Gretchen AU!!!

Main Character:

Gretchen Weiners. Plastic turned accidental hero after she snooped a little too hard around one of the testing facilities and got bitten by a radioactive, genetically developed spider.

The embodiment of that ‘when my therapist says feeling something bad is going to happen is called anxiety and not spidey sense’ except she has BOTH.

She’s super self conscious about what people think of her and has really bad anxiety, does not want to acknowledge this because it means that there’s something ‘wrong’ with her and therefore she’s on the level of all the people they’ve made fun of over the years. She’s safer if she doesn’t admit anything about herself because they can’t use it against her.

Desperate to not be put under this label of ‘weird’ that she instead tries to dig this weirdness out of other people to use it against them to again protect herself because she needs to be seen as normal and fine. Perfect candidate to be bitten by a radioactive spider because she is forced into this path of constant weirdness and judgement by others, she will never be able to make everyone happy in the world when she’s Spider-Girl.

Has built up this awful defence mechanism of hiding everything weird about herself in order to be safe and not judged, to suddenly gain these superhuman abilities that make her stand out in a crowd. Then when she tries to repress that part of herself it only ends up with her watching a friend’s loved one die and realising that she could have prevented it. Regret and guilt, bitterness at having to accept that this is her new forced destiny. Nobody else can be this hero because nobody else has these abilities.

Takes a while to adjust to her role and her abilities. Can shoot webs out of her wrists (instead of using the and nearly puked the first time she found out she could do it).

Support:

Cady Heron. Janis Imi’ike. Damian Hubbard. All part of the Spider-girl squad after Cady found out about Gretchen’s special powers and let it slip to Janis and Damian (still feeling guilty after the mishaps of the movie), they’ve all agreed to work together with each of them seeing it as an opportunity to ‘show off their skills’.

Cady helps with certain tech associated with Gretchen’s suit along with trying to help understand the full capabilities of Gretchen’s new powers, also trying to figure out what exactly the main villain is up to.

Janis designed the suit Gretchen uses, she also has to fix said suit every time Spider-girl manages to rip it, also tries to teach Gretchen self defence but stops after Gretchen punches a hole through a sandbag.

Damian is the campaign manager, and by that I mean he helps spread the word about Spider-girl on TikTok and instagram to get her (him) famous (mostly to sell merchandise so he can make bank, but also to support her and make sure people know about the new hero that’s saving them!! Yeah!!)

Karen Shetty!!!!!!!!! My girl is observant despite being a bit air-headed and does figure out after a while that Gretchen is Spider-girl but keeps her mouth firmly shut because she doesn’t want to put Gretchen in any more danger than she already is (is also the Mary Jane of this AU, aka Gretchen is so in love with her but cannot act upon it but also Karen is in love with Gretchen)

Minor Antagonist:

Regina George. Does not like that Gretchen is being even more secretive than she usually is, but also straight up lying to her because Regina finds inconsistencies in her excuses and her lies really easily. So Regina starts investigating and finding more elaborate ways to discover what Gretchen’s secret actually is.

Also has tension with Janis. Like every time these two are having their little passive aggressive conversations it’s just so gay, very gay.

Main Villain:

I want to keep this a surprise, because when I do eventually write out this AU I want it to come as a plot twist, or even just a decent shock to people. Just know they run a very powerful company that’s been testing serums and mutations on animals…and people.

Plot:

Set in senior year, all major events of the film have passed, the plastics and art freaks are now semi-acquainted (thanks to the existence of Cady Heron), not close friends by any means (other than the weird tension between Regina and Janis (gay)) but they still will talk to one another, sometimes.

Classic Spiderman origins, goes to big company on school trip, Gretchen gets bitten by a radioactive spider after snooping a little too hard, and has to hide from the public that she’s a weird super powered freak!

However, hiding said secret is a lot more difficult, especially when you have no understanding or control of your abilities, even worse when you don’t even try to understand them. Hence Cady finding out when Gretchen accidentally shoots a web onto her.

One thing leads to another, and with a lot of convincing and a canonical tragic event, Gretchen finds herself becoming Spider-Girl.

I’m still working on more of the detailed aspects of the plot as of right now, but I just wanted to give my basic ideas rn for the au!
