Nimona Big Bang Sign Ups Are Open!

Do you love the Nimona movie and/or graphic novel? Are you a writer who has always wanted fanart for a fic, or an artist looking for inspiration?

Sign up for the Nimona Big Bang and we will help find you a good match!

What's a Big Bang?

A Big Bang is a collaborative fandom event that results in an explosion of new fanwork. Writers are paired with artists, who create fanart for the new fanfic written for the Bang.

For the Nimona Big Bang, we're asking for a 5,000 word minimum for fanfics and two art pieces. Participants can take on up to two possible roles: writer, artist, beta reader (to help proofread draft fics), writer pinch hitter (in case a writer needs to drop out), or artist pinch hitter (in case an artist needs to drop out).

What's the schedule?

Sign ups for all roles opened on January 1, 2024. Writers need to sign up by March 1st, artists need to sign up by April 1st, and beta readers need to sign up by July 28th.

Writers need to provide fic summaries/200 word excerpts no later than April 20th so that artists can bid on them. Writers and artists will be paired by April 28th.

We will have several scheduled check-ins to make sure everyone's on track. If you feel like you need to drop out, please do so by July 15th so that we can try to find a replacement writer or artist for your partner.

Final fanfics and fanart will be revealed on September 14th.

How do I sign up?

We understand that people are busy! The schedule was designed to be relatively relaxed and low pressure.

I'm not sure if my writing or art is good enough.

We're not gatekeeping! Beginners are welcome.

We also will have beta readers to help proofread for grammar, spelling, and clarity.

I'm having trouble coming up with a fic idea.

We're happy to help! If needed, we can provide prompts, AU ideas, etc.

I've never written a fic that's 5,000 words before.

This is an excellent excuse to give it a try in a supportive community! If you're used to writing shorter scenes, connecting enough of them will help get you there. :) (The 5 + 1 fic format might be a good fit if you have length concerns, but there are many ways to write a fanfic.)

*sighs wistfully* back in the day they didn't let you make a cartoon without including at least one goth chick. it was black lipstick as far as the eye could see. we didn't know how good we had it.

Man, one of my favorite things to see as an artist is seeing other artists get so inspired by some new thing and passionately make their How-did-I-even-make-this???™ level art

Like, whenever there is a new killer animation or tv show or music video or something, I always see an influx of fanart with artist captions saying something along the lines of, "this is literally the best piece I ever made, I love it so much, how did I even make this???"

Like, thats ~Passion~ babes

I'm not even talking about some nebulous concept of, "love makes art full of feelings" or whatever. Like, sure, yeah, art is usually about emotion and communicating ideas, so loving the craft is often pretty integral--

But

When you are absolutely obsessed with whatever your making fanart of, there is a tangible difference in your art. When you hold so much love and care for something, then make art about it, you inherently put more love and care into the art.

Like, literally. You notice the minute details about the subject because you care about it. Then, those details get put into your art. You notice the details of other artists fanart because you care about it. Then, those too, get put into your art!

The passion gets put into your art

I love love love seeing it everytime. Art inspires art. Passion inspires passion. I think it's why I love fanart so much, as it's often fueled by the passion of the artist.

Five of Wands: Covention Duel!

Upright: Conflict, competition, rivalry, disagreements, tension, arguments, difference of opinion, clashing ideals

Reversed: Avoiding conflict, mutual understanding, peace, cooperation, truces, healthy competition, release of tension

The Five of Wands is the card of conflict, clashes, and competition. It could signify a literal physical fight (like the duels between Lilith and Eda or Luz and Amity), or more internal conflicts like differing worldviews or clashing priorities. In Lilith and Eda's case, their conflict derives from their opposing lifestyles and beliefs about magic and social systems; Eda practices wild magic and refuses to conform and join a single coven, while Lilith upholds and enforces the coven system and strives to get Eda to join her side by any means necessary. Their rivalry also stems from disparities of raw magical talent between them. Luz and Amity also show clashing priorities in this episode: Amity's diligence improving her Abomination magic to maintain superiority versus Luz learning magic from scratch to protect her loved ones.

When reversed, the Five of Wands symbolizes an end to a conflict, often through clear communication and trying to understand differing opinions. After their botched duel, Luz and Amity communicate their motivations and admit their failings in behavior towards the other. They both recognize a bit of themselves in each other, and are able to come to a mutual understanding and make a tentative peace—the first brick in the foundation of their relationship.
