I've never understood why that quote should be particularly meaningful. It doesn't suggest any conscious or unconcious racial bias to me at all. All I see is 'Tolkien used what he knew were heavily exaggerated caricatures of an ethnic group to describe how he envisioned the orcs to the person he was writing to' at worst I would say the language seems insensitive to our modern ears, but that's hardly a damning mark of anything in my opinion.
I'll be honest I don't.. really see a problem with that? That's a stretch from saying something like "orcs actually look like mongol people' which seems to be the conclusion usually reached, and a very far stretch from the implication people draw that 'Tolkien was racist against these people'
I supposs they could be taking the stance that. 'It is inherently a bad thing to create anything that could be perceived as an ethnic caricature, even if you aren't actually saying anything about the people who's exaggerated stereotypes were used as a base' but I don't think I would agree with that take.

Random pieces of advice about worldbuilding and plot.
If every story is worth telling, there are some elements to take into account to make it right.
Every cause has consequences. A story is logical in one way or another. Whether you plan your story or go with the flow, if you ask about: the origins, reactions and actions to be taken following an event, the pieces somehow will ‘click into place’.
Everything has a cost. Magic system, war, life in general... Don't forget that resources are not unlimited. Consider the societal, social, natural, (magical, if need be) limitations.
Challenge the statut quo and the villain's motivations (if there's a villain in the original sense of the term) : Ask yourself why the villain wants to ‘change the world’ (and really question his legitimacy) and what the world should look like after the final confrontation. If we come back to the original point, it's that the plot didn't serve any purpose, being no more than a ‘historical aside’. Remember that everything happens for a reason, so make that reason a good one.
Make actual research about geography and climate: forest, desert and especially rivers can't pop out of nowhere, they must respect certain natural principles. For example, a river must have its source somewhere, often high up in the mountains. So it seems logical that a river should be close to a mountain. Be careful if you want to incorporate a map in your story !
Be careful when you rely on chance, fate or whatever you call it. I still can't work out whether it's worse than deus ex machina - especially if it's done badly. As far as I'm concerned, if you work well enough with the cause-consequence chain and have a good grasp of the limits of your universe, you won't need to rely on this kind of process. this one is actually pretty personnal, you have every right to disagree.

Example: The wind howled through the narrow alley, carrying the distant sounds of a city that never seemed to sleep, never seemed to rest, and in that eternal hum, he wondered, not for the first time, if he would ever find peace here or if, like everyone else who tried to escape the shadows, he would simply become another part of the city’s endless noise.
Here, the length of the sentence mimics the complexity of the thoughts—heavy, reflective, almost hypnotic. It builds tension not with action but with an overwhelming feeling of being stuck or trapped in thought.
Combining Both = Dynamic Flow
The real magic happens when you mix short and long sentences. This creates a rhythm—suddenly, a break in the flow, a quick shock, and then back to a longer, more drawn-out moment. It reflects real life: quick bursts of action or emotion followed by moments of pause or thought.

Contextual Details in Description
When you add contextual depth to the little things around your characters, you can subtly reveal their emotions, their past, and even the plot itself without hitting readers over the head with it. Here’s how to do it. 👇
1. The Vase on the Table
Instead of just saying “There was a vase on the table,” you could add:
"A cracked vase sat on the table, half-filling with wilting daisies, the dried petals spilling onto the wood in a scatter of pale yellow."
This says a lot more, right? 👀 The broken vase suggests something is off. Maybe it’s been neglected or maybe it’s been damaged by something or someone. The wilting flowers signal that time has passed, that things are not as they should be. And the pale yellow petals spilling over could symbolize something fragile—emotions, perhaps, or relationships in the story that are falling apart. You’ve got a moment in just that vase.
2. The Book in Her Hand
Instead of saying “She held a book,” try:
"Her fingers curled around the edges of the leather-bound book like it was a lifeline, the faint smell of ink and paper clinging to the cover as if it had absorbed every secret she’d ever whispered into its pages."
Now, the book isn’t just an object—it’s an anchor for her emotional state. The “lifeline” suggests she’s in turmoil, possibly using the book to find comfort or distraction. The detail of the “smell of ink and paper” gives us sensory insight, while also implying that the book is well-worn, loved, or possibly even overused in moments of solitude. Suddenly, this book tells us something about her, too.
TL;DR
In literature, every description should serve multiple functions:
Setting the Scene – What does this detail tell us about the environment?
Revealing Character Emotion – How does the character interact with this object? Is it a source of comfort or pain?
Foreshadowing or Thematic Connection – Does this object hint at something bigger coming up?

Tips for writing flawed but lovable characters.
Flawed characters are the ones we root for, cry over, and remember long after the story ends. But creating a character who’s both imperfect and likable can feel like a tightrope walk.
1. Flaws That Stem From Their Strengths
When a character’s greatest strength is also their Achilles' heel, it creates depth.
Strength: Fiercely loyal.
Flaw: Blind to betrayal or willing to go to dangerous extremes for loved ones.
“She’d burn the whole world down to save her sister—even if it killed her.”
2. Let Their Flaws Cause Problems
Flaws should have consequences—messy, believable ones.
Flaw: Impatience.
Result: They rush into action, ruining carefully laid plans.
“I thought I could handle it myself,” he muttered, staring at the smoking wreckage. “Guess not.”
3. Show Self-Awareness—or Lack Thereof
Characters who know they’re flawed (but struggle to change) are relatable. Characters who don’t realize their flaws can create dramatic tension.
A self-aware flaw: “I know I talk too much. It’s just… silence makes me feel like I’m disappearing.” A blind spot: “What do you mean I always have to be right? I’m just better at solving problems than most people!”
4. Give Them Redeeming Traits
A mix of good and bad keeps characters balanced.
Flaw: They’re manipulative.
Redeeming Trait: They use it to protect vulnerable people.
“Yes, I lied to get him to trust me. But he would’ve died otherwise.”
Readers are more forgiving of flaws when they see the bigger picture.
5. Let Them Grow—But Slowly
Instant redemption feels cheap. Characters should stumble, fail, and backslide before they change.
Early in the story: “I don’t need anyone. I’ve got this.”
Midpoint: “Okay, fine. Maybe I could use some help. But don’t get used to it.”
End: “Thank you. For everything.”
The gradual arc makes their growth feel earned.
6. Make Them Relatable, Not Perfect
Readers connect with characters who feel human—messy emotions, bad decisions, and all.
A bad decision: Skipping their best friend’s wedding because they’re jealous of their happiness.

The intellectual can help stimulate meaningful conversations, adding depth to the group's interactions. More of a quiet yet important presence. They help get the Adventurer out of trouble, and are likely found bantering with the Comedian from time to time.

Description:
The connector is the social butterfly of the group, adept at bringing people together and building relationships. This character thrives on interaction and often knows everyone’s stories, interests, and backgrounds.
Traits:
Sociable: Enjoys meeting new people and introducing friends to one another.
Empathetic: Understands social dynamics and helps others feel comfortable.
Resourceful: Knows where to go for recommendations and suggestions.
Role in the Group:
The connector enriches the group by fostering relationships and creating opportunities for social gatherings. They often organise events and help deepen bonds within the friend circle. They are generally close to the Caregiven and the Leader’s partner/close friend. They help the Leader and Intellectual settle on ideas that are both fun and functional thus appeasing to the whole group.
7. The Realist
Description:
The realist is grounded and practical, providing a balanced perspective within the friend group. This character approaches situations with a level-headed attitude and often focuses on the facts at hand.
Note: While the intellectual is an inherently smart person, the realist is the apathetic and logical force of the group. They don’t have to necessarily be smart but are insightful.
Traits:
Pragmatic: Values practicality and often offers sensible solutions.
Sceptical: Questions overly optimistic or unrealistic plans.
Honest: Tends to speak their mind, even when the truth is uncomfortable.
Role in the Group:
The realist often acts as a counterbalance to more idealistic characters, helping the group assess risks and make informed decisions. They provide a sense of stability, ensuring that plans are not just fun but also feasible.
Edit: you don't NEED to have 7 friends each with one persona. You also don't need to have all 7. One person can be the caregiver to A and realist to B. They can be the leader in one friend group but the comedian in another (showcasing their comfort with the latter). This is just a list to help pan out your character personality types!

10 Flaws to Give Your Perfect Characters to Make Them Human
If you're tired of the usual vices like arrogance or impatience, here are some unique (or at least less basic) character flaws to give your perfect characters:
Pathological Altruism
A character so obsessed with helping others that they end up doing more harm than good. Their inability to let others grow or face consequences creates tension.
2. Moral Narcissism
A character who sees themselves as morally superior to others, constantly justifying selfish or harmful actions because they believe they have the moral high ground.
3. Chronic Self-Sabotage
A character who intentionally undermines their own success, perhaps due to deep-seated feelings of unworthiness, pushing them into frustrating, cyclical failures.
4. Emotional Numbness
Rather than feeling too much, this character feels too little. Their lack of emotional response to critical moments creates isolation and makes it difficult for them to connect with others.
5. Fixation on Legacy

So how can you avoid these pitfalls and write anger that feels real and compelling? Here are some tips to make angry scenes powerful without overdoing it.
1. Understand What Fuels Your Character’s Anger
To write anger authentically, you need to understand its roots. People get angry for complex reasons—fear, frustration, betrayal, grief, and even love. Ask yourself what’s truly driving your character’s anger. Are they afraid of losing control? Do they feel abandoned or misunderstood? Are they hurt by someone they trusted? Anger rarely exists in isolation, so dig into the deeper emotions fueling it.
When you understand the core reasons behind a character’s anger, you can weave those nuances into the scene, making the anger more relatable and layered. Readers will feel the depth of the character's rage, not just the surface heat of it.
