If we only get one season 7 behind the scenes photo, let it be of Gary Oldman in costume as Jackson Lamb wearing this 🙏

Hi! Before jumping to my question, just wanted to say that your writing style is brilliant, I found myself rereading some metaphors and syntax choices almost crying 💔 I also remember one of your posts where you mentioned how carefully you check all the details before writing stories (and I did remember that while reading the Jackson-Catherine sex scene, because it felt so real for people of their age).
So, my question is (if it's ok to ask) - what kind of information did you look into before writing Lambdish fic and what seems to be a bit unrealistic to you imagining their relationship in real life?
Hey!! First of all — thank you so much, genuinely. That’s such a kind message and it means a lot. It’s absurdly flattering 🥹💔 And honestly, there are so many incredible writers out there doing beautiful work with these two — including you. I’ve read your stuff and adored it — it’s such a treat to be part of a corner of fandom where everyone is writing with so much care and thought behind it.
To answer your question — a lot of what I “researched” for this one shot was just returning to the source material. I didn’t really feel comfortable writing until I’d read some of the books, just to get a proper feel for their voices, history, and all the little details that live between the lines. I also dug into their backgrounds and timelines and tried to piece things together — because so much of who they are is built on things they never talk about.
Beyond that, for this one most of it wasn’t formal research, just me building them out in my head — almost like that character study. That’s kind of the lens I write through: they’re emotionally repressed, morally complicated people who are so much more vulnerable than they’d ever admit. Every interaction is coloured by decades of unspoken grief, guilt, and loyalty. They’d lie through their teeth before admitting they care, but they’d still walk into fire for each other without thinking.
Writing them as older adults added another layer too — I thought a lot about how intimacy shifts with age. Not just physically, but in the weight it carries. For people in their sixties, a touch or a glance means something different than it might’ve in their twenties. It’s quieter, more layered. Every moment feels like it’s carrying a lifetime of restraint behind it — especially with Catherine, who’s had enough fun to last her a lifetime as she says, and she’s all repressed emotion, and Lamb, who’s all avoidance and destruction as a form of care.
One of the big things I try to honour is how much they don’t say. They’re masters of evasion — sarcasm, deflection, cruelty when necessary. So I’m I rarely writing them being openly emotional without it being undercut by something. Most of their communication happens around the emotion, not inside it. What’s said in silence or in some bitter, offhand comment is usually the most important part.
And then there’s the tone — I try to keep it in line with the books, which are so uniquely bleak and dry, but still weirdly tender. (And so many flirty moments) That mix of brutality and care really defines their relationship to me. Even when they’re at each other’s throats, you can tell how much is unspoken underneath it.
What feels unrealistic? Probably the idea that they’d ever talk about their feelings the way I sometimes push them to. But emotionally, I don’t think it’s far off at all — I think they already love each other in canon, they just express it through sabotage
#a lot of the things i’ve been researching have been for the au ive been working on#i’ve got so many fics planned for both these characters it’s just finding the time to finish them#but thank u 🩷🩷#you rang#they both have my heart

Fic: Playing Mata Hari - Chapter 4
Playing Mata Hari | Slow Horses | Diana Taverner/Catherine Standish | E | Part 4 of 4 (~7,100 of ~18,800 words)
Diana Taverner recruits Catherine Standish for some undercover intelligence gathering. What seems like a simple job turns out to have unexpected pitfalls, but also unexpected joys.
“Well, that’s an Op successfully concluded. How did it feel being at the centre of things?” Diana arches a brow and there’s a smile on her mouth, warming. “Exciting,” Catherine admits. She rarely lets herself miss being in the thick of things. “Even when it got scary it was a thrill. Peril is its own kind of stimulant, isn’t it?” She leans back on the settee and looks at Diana, letting herself be warmed. “Mm,” Diana agrees. “And there are different kinds of peril, too.” Catherine feels a little bit of Cara’s coy flirtation slip back into her when she asks, “Like what?” She lets her in, but only so far - wants to be very clear with herself that she’s Catherine now. Catherine can flirt with Diana Taverner, Catherine can kiss her in her kitchen. She doesn’t need to be Cara to do that.
I've posted the final part a little early for you late-night birds on Friday/for weekend readers to have the whole thing. I hope you all enjoy! Many thanks to everyone who has left likes and kudos and comments :). The latter are particularly validating. If you've enjoyed, please let me know you liked it; it really feeds the muse! This story is complete but I have several other plot bunnies simmering away, just waiting for one to jump out and for me to have time and energy to write once more. Much love! <3
