Armour and Equipment of a Turkish Heavy Cavalryman dated Late 15th Century on display at the Royal Armouries in Leeds
Mail and plate armour for man and horse became the standard type of equipment for the heavy cavalry under the Timurids (1370-1506) and under the Ottoman Empire. These soldiers were armed with a bow, sword and sometimes a lance making them a versatile unit and they formed the main component of most medieval Islamic armies.
They were similar to Eastern Roman or Byzantine Imperial Cataphracts and were often referred to Spahis or Ghazi. Ghazi translates to “Strive, Aspire, or Carry Out.” The related word Ghazawan “To carry out a military expedition” is derived from this root.

Gods and Deities Sentence Starters
“And what are you the god of? Bad tastes?”
“You’re not my god.”
“It’s been a long time since anyone invoked my name.”
“I’m a god, not a genie. I do not ‘grant’ wishes.”
“You haven’t an inkling of an idea of what you’ve just done, haven’t you?”
“And what is a mere mortal to a god?”
“A god is only as powerful as their believers.”
“When’s the last time anyone prayed to you?”
“Don’t be stupid. Gods don’t exist.”
“Your petty discourse is highly amusing.”
“What a cute little shrine! I wonder who’s it to?”
“Your title may have “Evil” in it but you just look sad.”
“No one’s ever built me a shrine before…”
“You mustn’t be a very good god then.”
“Your mortal woes are beneath me.”
“You dare speak to me in such a tone?”
“Be careful of what you wish for.”
“You don’t know the meaning of “God-King”.
“You know not of who you speak to, do you?”
“You don’t look very… godly… to me.”
“’A god’? Don’t be so full of yourself.”
“What are you the god of?”
“Does it get lonely?”
“Oh god, please don’t hurt me!”
“Your god has no sway here.”
“And what brings you into my domain, little one?”
“I think I just woke something up. Something powerful.”
“Um… hello? Any… anyone listening?”
“This is stupid. Of course no god will listen to me.”
“You probably look nothing like your statue.”
“I hope this shrine is worthy enough for you…”
“I’m here as a sacrifice, as promised by my people.”

I always sort of imagined Validar to be one of those people who uses religion as an excuse to do horrible things. Case in point, when Grima actually showed up, he probably thought he would be able to get away with more horrible things. And I'm so glad he was wrong.
THIS THIS THIS
This is exactly the feeling that I got from him, too.  Validar and all of the upper tier Grimleal always came off to me as people who are using religion to their own benefit, whether they simply crave authority and desire to have power over others, or as a means to get away with criminal atrocities by virtue of the doctrine they manipulate to their own ends.
I have a lot of thoughts about the actual Grimleal faith.  The actual core faith, not the cult that Validar’s created.  I think that the original form of Grima worship that’s practiced throughout Plegia is about what you might expect from a religion.  It has a variety of teachings, traditions, and beliefs attached to it, that help to guide the believers in how they act, how they treat others both within and without, etc.  But Validar sees that faith as a way to advance, to gain accolades, control…and most of all power.  I personally think that the majority of Plegians who actively worship Grima might have supported the fell dragon’s return on the belief that Grima would protect them from from the persecution they’ve suffered for the past millennium.  Validar, meanwhile, sees Grima as the ultimate source of power: raising the fell dragon gives him an unrivaled weapon against any opposition (either beyond or within Plegia’s borders – who is honestly going to oppose him when he has a divine’s might at his beck and call?) and allows him to extend his influence as far as he desires, putting the very world in his palm if he so desires.
So he absolutely thought in the revised timeline that Grima showing up meant he would get everything he wanted.  And thank the gods he was wrong, since Grima let him burn when the time was right.
