The spring flowers at the Alpine Gardens at the Jardin Botanique (herein JABO) were really great this year, much needed after a hard winter. When I first saw the crocuses (Snow Bunting), I literally dropped to my knees and said "HELLO!"

Planted Sedum Rupestre "Angelina" and Sempervivum (maybe dark cloud?) in bricks that I found in the neighbourhood. I got the idea for this easy window sill garden from Alys Fowler's great book The Thrifty Gardener. Each plant sits in a mix of compost and vermiculite in one of the brick's holes. The brick is supposed to release just the right amount of moisture for these tough alpine succulents to thrive. The plants are hardy to zone 3 so I hope the hail and frost on their first week out will not kill them.
I really like the project and get a thrill from the mix of urban and plants. Why be frustrated about the restraints of urban gardens when you can plant these bricks? My guess is they would look out of place in a country garden but on my Montreal widow sill they are fantastic. Must find more bricks and add more sedums! I have my eye on sedum acre and a couple others up at the Jardin Botanique.
