“The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual”
Information and media literacy (IML) helps people to demonstrate and make informed decisions as users of information and media, as well as to become skilled developers and producers of their own information and media messages. According to Renee Hobbs, “few people verify the information they find online—both adults and children tend to uncritically trust anything they receive, regardless of source.” People must assess the information's reliability, which they can accomplish by answering three questions: What is the name of the author?, What is the message's objective? How did this message come to be? Being information and media literate is necessary for participation in a digital society; one must be able to comprehend, inquire, create, communicate, and think critically. It's critical to be able to efficiently access, organize, analyze, evaluate, and create a range of messages. To become media literate, you must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and question what you are watching, reading, or listening to. You must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and question what you are watching, reading, or listening to.
People with media and information literacy can analyze and make educated decisions as users of information and media, as well as become skilled developers and producers of their own information and media messages. MIL is a word that encompasses both media literacy and information literacy, as well as a variety of competencies. Information literacy emphasizes the necessity of access to information as well as the appraisal and ethical use of that information, whereas media literacy emphasizes the capacity to understand media functions, evaluate how they are performed, and use them for self-expression. It acknowledges the importance of information and media in our daily life. It focuses on freedom of expression and information because it allows individuals to comprehend the activities of media and other information providers, evaluate their content, and offer educated criticisms as consumers and producers of information and media material. Traditionally, information literacy and media literacy have been considered independent areas. It is a method that combines these two fields as a set of competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitude) required for today's life and job. MIL takes into account all forms of media and other sources of information, such as libraries, archives, museums, the Internet, and other technology.
