This post is the first in a series where I list what resources I use when writing about my favourite authors’ lives and works. This list is by no means the full extant of my online library, but a downsized catalogue of what I’ve come across and consider to be essential books or sites in my research.

Yeeep 😭 even, for some reason, this book which is 90% edvard, the cover is Jonas! They were alike in a lot of ways but it's pretty obvious how much younger he looks.

this drawing from the Royal Danish Library also labels Jonas as edvard, even though his name is in the corner? 🥲 also the snaaaail(Jonas was obsessed with snails)

Does anyone else find it annoying when posts on Andersen’s queerness, in relation to Edvard Collin in particular, use Barberon’s 1863 photograph of him and Jonas Collin the Younger? It’s incredibly misleading.

Hans Christian Andersen: A New Life by Jens Andersen (2005; English, Tiina Nunnally trans. from its original Danish et al.)

Andersen’s comedic play Herr Rasmussen (1846) creates a wave of embarrassment for the Collins because of its daring display of the homosocial. Submitted and staged without an author’s name, only one performance (March 19, 1846) was played at the Royal Theatre before it was pulled for being unsuccessful. The characters of Rasmussen and Larsen go as far as referring to addressing each other with the informal pronoun of “du” — something Andersen pleaded with Collin to refer to him as instead of “de,” the formal you.
