Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

"Nice characters are boring" to YOU. I love characters who no matter what, will always have genuine love for humanity in their heart. Characters who dance and laugh and sing with sincerity. Characters who believe in others, and are willing to extend a helping hand to people when no one gave them the same luxury. Characters who have gone through so much but believe, no matter what, that humanity and life is something beautiful and worth protecting

Been contemplating what my writing is about, lately, and what it should be about.

I feel like the narrative plays with this too?

Kafka has interests and dreams, he’s a goofball and still somehow just like those kids. What makes him mature isn’t a facet of his innate personality, but rather the deliberate choice to look out for those younger than he is. He’s the “grown-up” in the scenario because he’s taking responsibility for others’ well-being.

The decision is as natural as breathing for Kafka, too. Where a standard Shonen MC would have a dramatic “save my friends!” moment, Kafka acts automatically because he is older. He’s made the choice ahead of time to protect their potential. He doesn’t need to discuss it afterward, he doesn’t need their thanks, and he does it in more than one way. (He saves Reno physically, openly tells Kikoru when she’s done well, makes sure that he’s supporting everyone how he can mid-mission, etc.)

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I’m kind of in love with this viewpoint on maturity. It’s something you pick up and carry. Experience makes it easier to do so, but it doesn’t become your personality. It’s just making the decision to work to others’ benefit and take the hit when need be.

Seeing a lot of takes about how Kafka Hibino feels “like a teenager”/“like every other Shonen MC” but as someone rapidly approaching his age range, his portrayal feels really solid to me.

He is quick to point out what those around him are doing right. Despite trying to prove he belongs, he doesn’t let his ambition or pride interfere in his perception of his teammates. It’s a specific form of security and sincerity that only comes with life experience.

And the result is that the other members of the cast trust him.

They may rag him from time to time, but they see him as someone to admire, even though they’re vastly superior in terms of traditional Kaiju hunting. IMO, that’s not a dynamic you can create using characters in the same age range.

First you procrastinate on the task because it is not a big enough deal to get done urgently. Then you procrastinate on the task because it has become such a big deal that doing it is overwhelming. You would think that this implies a middle point where it is just big enough of a deal to get done easily, however the inherent perversity of the universe's causal geometry prevents this
