thoughts and opinion abt s3 since i've somewhat came to my senses.
What I liked: sheer gravity of the atmosphere, the tone, the strong emotional impact it had. it wasn't a "cool, shocking kind of hopelessness" but "a devastating kind that will stay with you for the rest of your life"
What I didn't like: lack of new themes, ideas, new things being said (that weren't already explored in s1) (oh well, besides the weird prominence of the baby theme that overtakes nearly all character motivations). what the fuck that even was with jun-ho. gi-hun's death and things surrounding it. i guess, the most importantly, how pointless it all feels in the end. not in a "phantasmagorical, lacks causal connections" way but in a "failure to say something the audience doesn't already know, do something it doesn't expect, overall lack of character impact on the plot" way
S3 is in a way ragebait. It feels like it was conceptualized with this idea in mind. especially looking at the creator's relationship with netflix. it is the thematic rethread of the s1 only even more hopeless this time around. all the new ideas introduced in s2 basically play out as a way to make things more depressing
it's capitalist realism yet again. all the more
So in the end, what was s3 even about?
it likes it's morals. it likes it's "human nature" theme. gi-hun is obsessed with morals. he becomes a martyr figure. (it's not squid game it's матрёнин двор with s3) i understand that the meaning intended is: "although he died, he did in the end prove that humans are not horses by refusing to do what the system expects from him by choosing to let the baby live" he proves that: "humans are good, humans are free, humans will make good choices to protect one another" and yet... everyone expected this, didn't they? not only the real audience, but the fictional one. because of the exact choice to suddenly make him a martyr. he's never taken a "selfish, bad" option, since he killed dae-ho. the only person who ever expected gi-hun to take the "selfish, bad" option was in-ho in the knife scene (and still even he didn't perceive it as something that would be morally wrong, would prove that gi-hun had been a hypocrite. no. he fucking tried to save him. he already though that gi-hun was in the right)
in the end, we have him versus a bunch of people trying to kill babies for personal gain. the only person who was somewhat sympathetic to his cause turning 180 on him. he had to give up his life for the baby because no one else was willing to. so... doesn't it in the end prove that of all humans only one wasn't a horse? well, actually no. many players made selfess choices all around. some even too died to save the baby. and for this reason i doubt this is even the only game that could've ended like this. the vips. the frontman. the audience. was anyone really surprised? did anyone really start to doubt their own beliefs? the only thing i can say, in-ho (probably) changed his mind about gi-hun, got that he wasn't trying to play the hero. i guess
trying to think abt it with elitist ideology in mind, all could be easily explained: "humans are horses. there are good horses. there are bad horses. bad horses tend to triumph over good. but that's just survival of the fittest, babe. good horses would've lasted more if they weren't so naive, weak or selfless. i pity these horses at most. how cruel the world can be. well, isn't it interesting to observe human behavior?"
Gi-hun could've never won ideologically on morals alone. he could've never won alone, in this regard. and like... there wasn't even an alternative for him. it wasn't even a good moral dilemma either: "would you die to protect the baby, you've so tirelessly protected all this time or take the money you don't even need? oh, and also you don't even value your own life anymore, and full on considered suicide until the baby appeared" it's pro-suicide propaganda. what the fuck. no wonder people felt so depressed after watching.
... and so... it's all the more devastating
All in all, at least that's my reading. that's why the season didn't really satisfy me. i'm still in the process of making sense of it all. it's fine as it is. it's fine if you engage with it on it's own terms. by any means, it's not a bad television (well, it certainly has it's flaws writing wise, but it still can be enjoyed) it's certainly interesting to think about, in part because of how divisive the reception had been so far
