A religious leader asked Jesus what he needed to do to gain eternal life. Jesus responded by asking the man how his own religion would answer that question. The man returned, “You must love God and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Jesus quickly affirmed the man and his religion, saying, “That’s the right answer. Do that and you’ll live.”

Unsatisfied, the leader asked Jesus to explain more clearly what was meant by the word, “neighbor.” Jesus obliged his request by telling the “religious expert” a story about a lovely man, a man who lived his life caringly on behalf of his neighbors. Jesus then encouraged the religious leader that if he really wanted eternal life, he could follow the example of the man in the story and it would lead him squarely there.

Importantly, and I think strategically, the man Jesus used as an example of healthy spirituality was from another religion. More specifically, the answer Jesus offered regarding what it means to love God, self, and neighbor was illustrated in Jesus’ story by a Samaritan, a member of a religion especially despised by many of the members of the spiritual leader’s own religion.

To be clear, Jesus wasn’t saying Samaritanism was the answer any more than he was saying Judaism wasn’t. What he was saying, and this is critically important, is that we humans can succeed or fail in our pursuit of eternal life, i.e. the stuff that really matters, regardless of our native religions.

The story is clear…

Jesus told the religious expert he should follow the Samaritan not try to convert him.

Norman R. Morrison was an American anti-war activist. On November 2, 1965, Morrison doused himself in kerosene and set himself on fire below the office of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara at the Pentagon to protest United States involvement in the Vietnam War, leading to his death. 

 On February 25, 2024, Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old serviceman of the United States Air Force, died after setting himself on fire outside the front gate of the Embassy of Israel in Washington. Bushnell said that he was protesting against "what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers" and declared that he "will no longer be complicit in genocide", after which he doused himself with a flammable liquid and set himself on fire

One of the most horrifying videos on YouTube that appeared in my feed this week was that of US Air Force airman Aaron Bushnell immolating himself just outside the Washington DC Israeli Embassy in protest of the genocide in Gaza. Evidently, he had received orders that he would be assigned along with other US military personnel to assist the Israeli Defense Forces in their so-called war against Hamas. As he stated in his video, he preferred to take this extreme step rather than be complicit in genocide. He was only 25 years old.

Rest in peace Aaron. You are a hero. I hope that your action draws more support in the US to end this heinous slaughter of the indigenous Palestinians by their genocidal oppressors.
