"Anyone ever tell you that you have a bad habit of fishing in places you shouldn't be?" That doesn't mean she won't take the coffee. Rogue or not, caffeine was caffeine. This city was exhausting to be in even if she wasn't working. It's day to day antics had a previous history of interfering in her contracts. Nothing quite like a healthy dose of fear gas to throw off your espionage.

Gotham by far is not her preferred city to work in. She never could tell you why though. It wasn't an issue with the dark, the Bat, or the underground politics, but there's just something... off that she never liked. The city kept you on the edge of unsettled. And in all fairness, that's where the city itself lived. That space of calm at the top of a rollercoaster, right before the drop. She's glad there's a few places still running around that aren't complete fronts. Diners held onto the safety of nostalgia no matter where you went. They weren't half bad places for reading up either. Scrolling through her tablet, Addie glanced up gratefully for the caffeine, sliding over a smooth fifty dollar bill in thanks.

"Thank you, love. No change please. Could you pick me out whatever slice of pie is your favorite? I think I'm going to be here a bit."

"You're the sweetest, thank you." The smell alone had her perking up a bit. She leaned forward a bit, just sitting with the warmth seeping into her hands. It's exactly what she's been craving. Well, the second most thing she's been craving anyway. She'd been trying to cut back the cigarettes. Joey always gave her a look when she pulled one out.

"How's your arm? You took a nasty hit. There's no shame in us stopping to get you checked out if you need."

This isn't the time. She already has so much to do. Joey having a better conscience and emotional breadth than any of them just added more. And today, she doesn't want to analyze feelings. Doesn't want to have a discussion on morality and her choices, and so her response is harsher than she'd normally use on her youngest.

Oh, sweetie.

On some level she does. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that. The missteps she took for protection became a Damocles sword. Carving a piece from everyone, but most of all Grant. Taking his life along with pieces. That doesn't mean she'd ever really know the damage from Grant's perspective. The way he clammed up, honestly, who knew if anyone else would ever know really.

"I couldn't have known how it'd play out." It's not an apology. She shouldn't have the right to plead for an understanding, but the soft wish is there nonetheless. If she'd had the crystal ball then to know how they'd all crumble, everything would be different. None of them could fix it now.

For a second, her hand reaches out to try to pull him in. Bad idea. It drops. She doesn't want to set off another bolting off. You weren't always so scared.
