What do you mean, you hate Luke Skywalker? He literally smiles at his enemies when they are trying to destroy his soul.

I just kind of liked this moment a lot. Elzar can only speak to the Jedi he knows (interesting that, in the time of the prequels, they seem to respect other Force traditions more than what Elzar’s implying his era does, given the way the Jedi get along with other Force traditions and respect/share various touchstones with other Force cultures) but it’s generally how the Jedi have always operated as we’ve seen them. They’re right about how the Force works, their teachings are almost word for word how George Lucas describes the Force working, but they’ve always co-existed with others who use the Force in different ways, they’ve always spoken well of them (when they’re not using it for evil, that is), and even in their most trying moments, they believe that the light will always be in the galaxy even if they themselves are stomped out. That the Jedi aren’t just a single moment in time or even just any one thing.  They change with what the galaxy asks of them–yes, including the prequels, where there were no good options, really only More Harmful and Less Harmful choices.  The Jedi changed to be what the galaxy asked of them, to save as many lives as they could, and they were repaid with betrayal and death, but the Jedi endured even through that.  They evolve with the galaxy, they evolve with the trauma and horror put on them, they come and go with the currents of life in the galaxy. Sometimes that means they’re able to be teachers, sometimes that means they’re forced to be warriors, sometimes that means that they’re in exile or wandering or exploring, but they always come around again.  That’s the most Jedi thing just about ever–you can be sad about the things you’ve lost, the Jedi Order of the prequels was beautiful, there were so many lights in the galaxy, they had so much tradition and history and culture and meaning, which was murdered and taken out of the galaxy, but the spirit of the Jedi lives on. But you move with the flow of life and reality. We know where Luke’s journey is going to end, we know that he declares himself a Jedi, like his father before him.  We know Anakin Skywalker not only returns to the light, but he returns to the Jedi Order, he wears the robes of a Jedi specifically when he becomes a Force Ghost.  Hell, even after everything in the sequels, we have Rey studying Jedi texts and hearing the voices of the prequels Jedi as they support her in her final battle against Sidious.  They were there for her, when she needed them most. What happened to the prequels Jedi was a horror, the genocide of their people was evil on a scale that’s difficult to wrap your mind around.  But the Jedi have always seen themselves as part of a bigger whole, we saw that over and over in their teachings in the source material, that they’re stronger as part of a whole, and seeing the Jedi as a bigger whole, seeing the way they change as the galaxy changes, they evolve with it, and even when that hurts them, even when it goes against Fate (as Lucas says about Anakin’s actions in Revenge of the Sith), they still move with the currents of the galaxy. “The reality of nature, of God and life, is that things come, and things go. They do not stay in your life. And you have to learn to accept the fact, that there is a continuum, that you’re just a part of and the things will be there, then they won’t be there.” –George Lucas This is part of why Obi-Wan and Yoda smile at the end of Return of the Jedi, not because things have to be exactly the same, the Jedi have never been about staying exactly the same.  They wouldn’t have fought in the Clone Wars if they truly believed they should never be anything other than what they were to start with.  Because they know that things come and go, that life is a continuum, and they’re just one part of a bigger whole. But they’re here for the Jedi that come after them.  Their imprints are here on Gazian and their spirits are going to come back to help Luke and then again to help Rey. The Jedi of every era endure.  They’re eternal in a way that nothing else in the galaxy is, because not just their legacy, but their hope and their spirit are always with the light.

New season's coming tomorrow, so Din's got an upgrade (shiny new weapon) and his kid in hand
(I've got new ideas to explore in this Hades style exploration besides the already existing interactions with Boba and Cobb - and look there is a pocket Luke already next to pocket Din in the background!)
