Light from the mid-morning sun slips through the sheer white curtains of your bedroom. It’s hot today, and the thin blankets catch on the light sheen of sweat on your skin. Still, you and Hongseok are sprawled on top of each other, limbs strewn about the expanse of the mattress or tucked underneath the pillows.

It takes you a while to wake, taking advantage of the day off and lack of an alarm to naturally come to consciousness. The sun hits your eyes as you try to open them, and you bury your head back into the pillows with a groan. A sleep-rough chuckle blooms on your right, followed by a kiss to your temple.

“Good morning, baby,” Hongseok greets, voice husky from a good night’s rest. It sends a slight shiver down your spine. Oh, how you love that sound.

The problem is that we’re consuming content at an even faster rate bcs of Covid and demanding more and more from groups, without them having their primary source of income. It only makes sense to me that they’re having so many fansigns. The multiple albums thing... I’m not going to try to defend that lol but buying hundreds of albums has ALWAYS been something people do in Korea, having more than one version didn’t affect that. Neither Covid nor multiple versions has changed anything there

yeah, i just think it’s one of those things that has been a problem since the day it started, but now it’s so engrained into kpop culture that people are willing to continue throwing their money at groups by purchasing an excessive amount of albums. i’m just getting tired of feeling like corporations are trying to take advantage of me. it makes me extra sad because it’s starting to make me feel less invested in kpop... but that could just be my depression, honestly lol

Pentagon’s always had four(?) choices when it came to Japanese releases, but that seems a standard for some reason??? Usually one has a photo book, a different version has the DVD, and then the two others have.. idk, something? I think the cover may be a specific member or something, idk. It’s stupid but I’ve never seen a group do anything else with Japanese releases :/ Even Pentagon’s Cosmo, or Happiness/Sha La La, or Shine has multiple versions, as did Violet (1/2)

And I don’t understand it either but fan culture has /always/ been about buying tons of albums just to get into fansigns... I still remember the pic of a girl who made an entire desk and throne out of her Exo albums she was reselling 😂 It’s also horrible and incredibly stressful imo too so.. I’ve never been able to wrap my head around spending that much just to go to a fanmeet?? But it’s always been that way.... consumerism at its finest ig, huh :/ (2/2)

ahh, i haven’t followed their japanese releases too closely, so I missed that detail! but i’m glad i’m not the only one who feels stressed/overwhelmed by the consumerist fan culture we have. 

for the longest time, i only allowed myself to buy one version of each album because that’s all i needed. but some of my new friends that i work with are SUPER into ateez (i think i might have mentioned this in my last post) so my one friend literally buys a thousand-dollars worth of albums just to get into fansigns. so she sells extras to me for super cheap (like 5 dollars and i can take all the photo cards i want lol). so i have a few versions of the last two ateez albums. but every time i look at them on my shelf, i’m just like... why did I do that? i’m never going to flip through those photobooks again and they’re just taking up space on my shelf. NO MORE lol

so i just purchased a signed unseen ver. pentagon album, and that’s it. that’s all i’m getting. they could hold all the fansigns in the world, but i’m going to save my money for the next time they’re able to tour.

To be fair, they’re not getting their regular income from fanmeets or concerts.. but if you meant BEFORE Covid, then yeah lol

well i mean before and after. it has always been a problem and it just seems to have gotten worse because of covid. you're right that they're obviously not getting to do concerts anymore, but like... idk it just seems like such a rip off, and it's so wasteful?

with regular, in-person fansigns, it's all by chance. you buy albums and hope that one of them will get you a win. but it's understood that it's really only an option for korean fans because they're local. i think the virtual fansigns are definitely cool because they give fans all over the world a chance to chat with their faves, and that's amazing. but multiple fansigns per album release? and individual fansigns on top of that? and four different versions of the same album, just because you printed some different pictures? I have friends who are literally spending thousands on albums just for a chance to get into these fansigns, and I'm sure they aren't the only ones out there. they're usually able to sell their excess albums, but they do so at like $5-$10 an album, which is a huge loss. I just can't wrap my head around it.

one thing i always liked about pentagon is the fact that they only ever put out one version of their albums. they were simple, and it was easy for me to pick one up for myself. but I saw this morning that they're doing two different versions and it pisses me off because they're no better than anyone else (and it's cube's fault, I'm sure. Not blaming the boys for that decision).

(EDIT: coming back to this after posting bc im a whole ass idiot, black hall had two versions but i didn't remember that bc i didn't buy one lol oops. the fact remains, though, that i preferred the days where they released only one version)

more than anything, my earlier post was spurred on by the stray kids individual member fansigns that I got an email about today lol it just seems so excessive to me. I'm sure they're making a hell of a lot more through these fansigns than they did from concerts.
