\jungwoo’s known his sister his whole life, so he knew if something was up. he knew there was something wrong the moment jiu gave him fake smiles instead of her real ones, he saw the sadness in her eyes that wasn’t there before. he didn’t ask, he saw that it hurt jiu and he knows talking about it will hurt even more. or maybe he was just a coward at that time, maybe he was too scared to ask his sister why she changed. but seeing that scar, jungwoo’s fear just evaporated.
“i fell, that’s all.” bullshit. why was his sister lying to him? jungwoo stared at his sister’s eyes. his mouth twisted and he could feel tears forming. she was lying to him. “why are you lying to me, jiu?” he asked, his voice as quiet as a hush. “just--” jungwoo’s voice broke. he stared at the gorund before continuing. “just tell me. please. it hurts me to not know, jiu.”
`exposed.
+ haejungwoo:
“i’ll hunt him down, jiu. even if it means going to mother about this. i will make whoever did this to you pay.”
slim fingers rub her wrist. she could feel his anger in his grip. it was deadly- something that terrified her. how could jungwoo become so angry?
the tears began to pool in her eyes before she even realizes it. “i…” words are difficult to form for her. it hurts to lie to her brother. he deserves to know the truth, but she can’t bring herself to tell him. the tears slip from her eyes before any other words are able to leave her mouth. “jungwoo- it’s nothing to worry about. i fell, that’s all.” the words leave a bitter taste on her tongue. “mom doesn’t need to know about this. no one does. can’t we keep this a secret?” the words leave her lips in a soft plea. but even so, she’s not sure if jungwoo will even believe it now.

jungwoo’s breaths became heavier, realizing he was squeezing his sister’s hand harder than he thought he was, he let go. he grit his teeth. who would do this to his sister? who would dare to leave a scar on his sister?
jungwoo cared for jiu more than anyone, and he’d think of what he would do if someone ever hurt jiu. the answer would naturally be to beat the other party up, he was a protective younger brother, but thinking of it then and seeing a scar now was extremely different. the immense anger he felt wasn’t leaving him, he could almost feel fumes coming out from his ears. “don’t lie to me.” his voice was stern, trying to keep himself from shouting at his sister. “i’ll hunt him down, jiu. even if it means going to mother about this. i will make whoever did this to you pay.”
`exposed.
+ haejungwoo:
the thought of someone hurting his sister made him hurt and angry at the same time, he could almost see red.
the grip on her wrist brings nothing but trepidation into her senses. like a tsunami, it washes away every other feeling of self-loathing and leaves only fear in it’s wake. she doesn’t know what to say, what to do. the anger rolls off jungwoo in waves, crashing into her barely stable structure.
her head shakes, only slightly- a small no leaving her lips. “nothing happened.” it’s difficult to lie to her brother. she knows he doesn’t believe. and he will press for answers until he gets the truth. but she can’t bring herself to say the name.
it’s hard for her to admit that it was self-inflicted. i did it jungwoo, it was me. she wants the words to slip past her lips but they refuse. instead, her sights stay on the floor. guilt begins to rush in. how could she do this to herself? and how would she keep it from jungwoo?

he took a deep breath, but even after that breath he still didn’t know what to do or say. he had confirmed it was her, and it made his heart race and his hands clammy. if he wasn’t nervous jungwoo wouldn’t think twice about hugging her, they were as thick as thieves when they were still children, but things have definitely changed. he hasn’t seen her in years, and now she’s no longer that girl he used to chase around-- but a lady-- he didn’t know how to act.
“i--” her words stopped him. he stood there, wide eyed, staring at yuhwa. jung remembered the day she didn’t show up, he looked for her and waited, he waited until he realized she wasn’t coming to play with him again. he was as heart broken as a little boy could be. but that pain, he remembers, didn’t last long. it was the time he realized that the life in the palace wasn’t as perfect as he thought it’d be, and he quickly forgot about her. “i missed you too.” he felt like something crawled op his throat as soon as the words left his mouth. thoughts soon flooded his mind, is she married? she didn’t look like she is. yet it was still inappropriate for a man to say such words to a lady like herself.
he heard himself chuckle. you’ve grown up well. it’s a funny thing, is it not? to lose each other and for whatever reason, find each other again. “as do you.” he stared at her, she indeed has grown up. jungwoo didn’t know how it made him feel, but he knows he was feeling something. he cleared his throat, attempting to sound composed. “how have you been?” and with a small whisper he was hoping she doesn’t catch, he asks, “where have you been?”
catch up with the sunrise,
haejungwoo:
it’s been five years since he last saw her, and her sudden presence made him quite nervous.
she is caught speechless, rendered breathless, the world around her seemingly moves a fraction slower. the pressure rises in her chest, squeezing, squeezing, squeezing her lungs until she was sure they would pop. “i–yes.” the answer sits bluntly on her tongue, rolls off her lips without a second thought. jung–a friend long since lost, and as luck would have it through cruel intentions, he has found his way back to her again.
“jung,” the name feels bitter in her mouth now. years had passed and she was sure she had managed to finally erase the name from her vocabulary, to forget the way her mouth twisted and turned at the sound of the single syllable. “i’ve missed you.” and now that she’s said the words aloud, given them life and brought them into existence, she wants to take them back. they are adults now, with expectations and rules to follow. no way could an unmarried woman, such as herself, allow herself the privilege of voicing how his absence had affected her so.
she’s a proper lady now, all grown up.
her smile falters, wistful around the edges. “you’ve grown up well, jung.” and no matter how many times she chastises herself, she will always give in.

{ continued from here ; featuring @haesiwoo }
the giddiness jungwoo felt increased as both of them crawled out the hole that exited to the back of the palace. it was a place that people rarely pass by, and usually, jungwoo would just pay the stationed guard to keep his mouth shut. But it seems like luck was on their side as no one was in sight, allowing the two to enter an alley that lead to the capital unnoticed.
“isn’t this so exciting?” jungwoo asked, as he turned to face his brother. “where should we go first? oh! i think there’s going to be a performance by the marketplace today... or maybe the art supplies shop? oh!” jungwoo exclaimed, clapping his hands together in glee. “there’s this restaurant that serves the best beef stew. you’ll fall in love!”
the restaurant was a rather large building with two floors. the building’s architecture looked like it came from Qing, as foreign travelers and merchants often dined here. it was made with red walls and deep red columns. Lanterns lined the roof, and two guards were standing at the circle-shaped doors.
“it looks awesome doesn’t it?” jungwoo said, as they stopped in front of the building. “they also make mean sweet and sour pork but the i like the palace’s better.”

like any day, the streets were busy with people. jungwoo was in a rather good mood as he strolled, eyeing the freshly cooked batch of biscuits. he craved for his usual beef stew, so he decided to take a quick trip out of the confines of his home.
deciding that the biscuits would only make him full, jungwoo proceeded to walk towards his favorite restaurant. he was stopped when a flash of black hair was seen from the corner of his eye. his head quickly turned to look, spotting a familiar frame that he couldn’t mistake for anyone else.
he briskly walked towards her, a grin on his face, hoping his sister would eat beef stew with him. “jiu!” he called out, but as he got closer, he noticed something pink on his sister’s hand. he couldn’t fully see what it was because of the angle of her hand. if that’s what i think it is-- anger resonated through jungwoo as he stalked closer, grabbing his sister’s palm. “who the fuck is it? what happened?” jungwoo was almost shouting. the thought of someone hurting his sister made him hurt and angry at the same time, he could almost see red.

( `featuring: @haejungwoo )
there was no one that jiu adored more than jungwoo. even siwan did not receive the affection that jungwoo did. she wants nothing more than to protect him from the cruel ways in which the world works. but she knows she isn’t able to.
she knows that jungwoo is just as she is. they sneak from the palace together often, each with their own agendas, yet they often seem to run into each other. they’ve read up on countless historic scrolls. they’ve done it all.
but there are things that jiu isn’t sure she completely trusts jungwoo with. such as her situation with siwan. she glares at the scar on her palm, moving her hand in directions to see if it’s any less noticeable. but each angle only brings a new view of her scar. each angle only shows her mistakes.
a puff of her anger leaves her lips, her hand laying exposed to all that see her. at least jungwoo doesn’t know.

jungwoo looked around the crowded venue, silently taking in the atmosphere. he could feel the happiness around him, although he knew that the happiness didn’t come from the newly weds themselves. “as do i, brother.” he sighed, he knew the words of the King is law, and jungwoo didn’t think that love or anything else could sway his decisions. “but i wish them happiness, nonetheless.”
he turned to woon, a smile spread on his face. “now, let’s not let such thoughts ruin the ambiance.” jungwoo leaned in, an attempt to lighten the mood. “so the crown princess selection. any young miss that caught your eye?” jungwoo knew that the selection of the crown princess wasn’t what woon wanted, just like miyoung and siwan. but living as royalty, where everything is politics, a prince’s feelings doesn’t count as much.
flattery ;
@haejungwoo:
jungwoo sighed in mock exhaustion. “it’s unfortunately the latter. it’s that or it’s because this event has become to tiresome for the ladies to notice my charms.” he chuckles, looking over at his brother with smiling eyes. “and how have you been faring tonight?” he asks, raising an eyebrow. he wasn’t sure if woon liked coming to events like this, and frankly he was quite worried about the crown prince since he hasn’t seen much of him. “isn’t this a bit tiresome?”
“one would think that they’d be used to such events hosted by the family,” he commented lightly, trying his best not to sour the mood. jungwoo, as far as woon was concerned, was one of the siblings he could get along with, and that was just fine with him. he did not question it because there was no need to destroy good relationships out of concern for the could-bes and what-ifs.
“quite bored, brother,” he replied with a sigh. “and a little concerned for miyoung and siwan. i…know it is not my place to say, but i do have my doubts on their union.”

he paced around his room, unsure if he should really go through with this. he asked siwoo out to see him earlier, planning on following through with their plan. he was going to sneak out once again, but with siwoo this time. he stared at his closet for a long time, biting his fingernail. his younger sibling would be safe with him around, he’d make sure of that. they won’t go very far, just far enough for siwoo to see what’s going on outside of the palace walls.
he grabbed another robe, figuring siwoo wouldn’t have any clothes that aren’t fancy. excitement filled jungwoo, he’d never had anyone out with him before. oh the places he’d show siwoo. jungwoo grabbed his sketch pad and stuffed it into a bag along with his usual things.
jungwoo sneaked out from the back of his home and ran to the location and stood near the hole, waiting for siwoo. “hey!” he motioned him over, pulling out the robe and shoes from the bag. “you need to change into this.”

deep in thought, jungwoo walked through the throng of people, barely avoiding getting hustled. the last conversation he had with his mother was still in his mind. “remember your place, jung. i’ll be happy if you just live your life as quiet as possible.” a frown engulfed his face as he remembered her words.
distracted by his thoughts, he didn’t see the little boy in front of him until his side collided with the boy’s face. he fell to the ground, crying until his mother reached for him. “oh, sir, i’m so sorry.” seeing the woman clutch her son while apologizing for something she knew her son didn’t do brought a frown to jung’s face once again. assuring the mother it was alright, jungwoo bought the biscuits the woman was selling. he should at least so this much.
he reached back to pocket the remaining of his money when he felt something his his elbow. jungwoo quickly turned around with apologetic eyes. “i’m sorry.” his eyes widens as he sees her face. his body remained still, he felt like he was hit by lightning. he saw a pair of familiar eyes that brought a certain ache to his heart. “yuhwa” realizing his voice was a whisper, he cleared his throat and spoke again. “yuhwa. it’s you isn’t it?” he searched her eyes for something, he wasn’t sure what. she called him sir, the girl he once new wouldn’t have called him that, hence his doubt. it’s been five years since he last saw her, and her sudden presence made him quite nervous.
catch up with the sunrise,
@haejungwoo
they move through the market quickly, with purpose. her sisters holds a list in one hand, a bag on fruit in the other, and yuhwa’s attention between her teeth. “it’s going to rain soon,” yuhwa comments. grey clouds hang low in the sky, pushed along by the late afternoon breeze.
“which is why you need to stop dragging your feet.” her sister rushes, hurries, speeds off into the crowd of merchants and beggars. it wouldn’t have taken yuhwa much effort to go after her sister, to raise her voice and call out for her among the throng of people. but who is to say, this wasn’t just another one of her lucky moments. it would be a waste to throw such an opportunity away.
the threat of her father’s reaction looms over her, plaguing her thoughts as she moves from vendor to vendor. to play ignorant would be too easy, feign innocence with big doe eyes and fluttering lashes. he knew her too well, though, knew her for her subversiveness and impulsiveness. but what was another hand against her cheek amongst the many others she had already endured?
she heaves a sigh, twirling the stem of a flower between her fingers. even while away from home, her thoughts remained occupied– “excuse me.” an elbow knocks against the space between her shoulder blades, throwing her off balance for just a moment. “do watch–” her words get stuck between her lips, quickly dying down on her tongue. her eyes had not even been on the man for a second, and she already could feel a sense of misplaced familarity growing from the tips of her fingers to the centre of her chest. he, who reminded her so much of a friend long lost and forgotten. “jung–you, you’re.” she shakes her head, a hand pressing against her flushed cheek. “pardon me, sir.”

for a brief moment, he thought about what would happen if he did take siwoo out. “yes, i must.” jungwoo nodded, his smile grew mischievous at the thought. escaping the palace brought jung happiness nothing could, however there was always a lonely feeling lingering inside him. the thought of having his sibling come with him excited him immensely. oh, how he would show him the capital. the busy marketplace that holds magnificent finds, the delicious beef soup and rice wine, the docks filled with merchants. "oh, dear brother. now that you have me thrilled at the thought, you mustn't retreat when the time comes.”

“terribly good, i must say,” woon replies with mock graveness, and not as much envy as he’d like to let on. he likes to believe that he has a good relationship with most – if not all – of his siblings, and it would do no good to act otherwise, as if his mother hasn’t warned him enough against opening his heart to too many. even blood relations have their own affiliations, and their own loyalties, and he has to ensure that they lie with him, too.
“this is extremely unfair,” he finally laughs, stopping just short of smacking his brother’s back playfully. “have you wooed any ladies tonight, dear brother, or has everyone gone blind?”

jungwoo squinted his eyes as he stares a woman with her back facing him. the back was familiar, but he was unsure of who it was. realizing, jung practically ran towards the figure, stopping right before the person looked at him. “noona.” he greeted, bowing at his eldest step-sister. he wasn’t very close to her but he loved the powerful aura she emits. “did you come to visit us?”

jungwoo’s eyes lit up, an idea popping into his head. he honestly was just thinking about messing around with the piss drunk noblemen almost toppling over, but the latter gave him something even better. “i don’t think people will notice if we leave for a bit.” there were always people trying to find fault in the royal family, and he wasn’t about to be the cause of one complain. however, if they leave and be back before anyone notices they’re missing, it wouldn’t be a problem. glancing around, he started to gently push the other to the exit. the guards are too drunk to even notice they’re leaving. “i heard merchants from qing arrived today, want to check out the market place?”
