Hello MTX! What are your thoughts on the recent case with Haibara? Do you think that the new information in these cases change any of your theories on Rumi or on Haibara's drug development? Looking forward to your thoughts!
Detective Conan File 1070-1072 Review/Discussion!
I have a lot of positive thoughts on the recent Haibara case (File 1070-1072). We rarely get Haibara centric cases, so it was such a treat to finally get back to focusing on one of our favorite female characters. I think this case mainly lifted up Akemi and made her more likable, which I also appreciated.

Wakita's involvement was more limited than I expected however, which was a bit disappointing. It didn't feel like it added anything more than what we already were aware of (that he is a BO member that could trigger Haibara's sense). Wakasa's glance at his back was hardly any giveaway to her knowledge either. At best, we were given an insight on his memorization skills, where he remembered where and when Akemi graduated after 13 years.

As for Wakasa, nothing has changed regarding my theories on her being Vermouth in disguise. In fact, it was more enforced when she demonstrated sensitive BO-specific knowledge about Miyano Shiho's background (File 1070), which a high-ranked member like Vermouth is knowledgeable about.

As for her "impossible..." remark, which frames her as a suspicious BO member just finding out about Haibara's identity (which is clearly Gosho's goal), I think her intent behind that remark is actually more ambiguous due to her vague eerie smirk that accompanied it, and it matches just as easily with a sarcastic intent, where she is simply playfully agreeing with Murata and the rest that it's impossible (knowing that it's very much the truth), which would fit with Vermouth's coyful personality.
The highlight of this whole case was definitely Akemi's message to Shiho (File 1072). It was a very heartfelt letter, but it also seeded in new indications on Akemi's awareness and the Miyano parents' research. Akemi mentioned that Elena told her that "the Silver Bullet is the bullet of justice", which is a direct reference to Atsushi's drug research. This is further implying that they had an honorable goal in mind for their drug (as expected) that would do more justice in the world, but it is also likely meant to indicate that Elena left Akemi with that kind of message to explain why they had to leave their kids behind.

The subtext gets sadder when you realize that Akemi was expecting for Shiho to take over their father's dream research (Silver Bullet) to carry her parents' hopes for justice, but Shiho instead ended up taking over the organization's foolish research (which gave birth to APTX 2.0), which she tearfully realized was a regretful decision during Mystery Train (File 821).
As a whole, I would say I was pretty satisfied with this case, but I hope we gear up more in later chapters in terms of Conan's Rum investigation, since Gosho is being quite apprehensive about giving Conan any Wakita clues (as seen in File 1072).

“Not a shark. The opponent was a dolphin. That’s right- the favorite of the sea. A malicious shark that’s fled from the cold, dark bottom of the sea just cannot compete, can it?”

I read that you think haibara won't take the pill. I don't know I feel like that wouldn't work. because she's technically older than people her age, so if she started dating a 16 years old classmate, even though her body is 16 as well, her brain is 27. That's not right. I think she will go take the pill, go to college, be happy and still live with Agasa
I mean, I could be wrong. Aoyama could pull what to me would be the plot twist of a century and have Haibara regain her original body back. But I really don’t think so because her character development hasn’t been written that way.
The thing is, right now, her life as Haibara is all she has. As Shiho Miyano, she has no friends, no family, no relationships whatsoever. She doesn’t even have a home. If she were to regain this identity that I’m sure she almost detests by now, she’d have nothing to go back to and it would only be a constant and painful reminder of everything she’s lost.
But as Ai Haibara? She’s got the chance to relive her life, to start over away from the Organization and everything that ruined her first life. No one gets a second chance at life the way she has, and taking into account that she probably had no childhood whatsoever in her previous life, and was condemned not to have a normal adulthood at all as Shiho Miyano, I think she’s very lucky and she knows that, and she’ll take the second chance life has given her.
The logic to apply here is pretty much the same logic she applies in regards to the Witness Protection Program, actually. Remember when Jodie offered to get her in the WPP and Haibara refused? She did so because even though she knew that it was the logically right thing to do, emotionally, she didn’t want it, because she’s found an emotional home in the Detective Boys and Agasa. I think she’ll apply the same reasoning in this case.
Plus, her entire storyline isn’t motivated by her desire and need to get her original body back --whereas that’s Shinichi’s sole motivator. Here’s the difference to take into account when we compare Shinichi and Haibara’s situation: we know from the get-go that Shinichi is desperate to get back to his life. That goal fuels every decision he ever makes. Him asking Haibara for prototype antidotes and going through the pain of changing back every time backs this up. But what about Haibara? She never once shows the need to get her old body back because she knows it means nothing but trouble. Her storyline isn’t motivated by or centered around this --on the contrary, it’s almost clear that, if it wasn’t for Shinichi’s constant begging, she wouldn’t even want to find the cure. Because as Haibara she’s found friendship, solace, and family.
I know what you mean, though. Logically, it’s weird, because her mental age is different. But I think that’s not gonna really matter in the long run, as long as she has people who know her real identity and who she can talk to as an adult: meaning Agasa and Shinichi, mainly, but I have a very strong feeling that others like Ran, Amuro and Akai will eventually know in the end as well, the latter of which will stick around to make sure she’s okay.
So if I were writing it, that’d be the logical thing to do. It’d be the path that made most sense taking into account how her story has developed through the years.
But, again, I could very well be wrong and Aoyama could have her get back her original form by the end.
#ai haibara#haibara ai#i agree with op#i think she will remain in her new form#now i say that while being very far behind on the story#but her development has been#in learning how to be a kid#and how to make friends and have a normal life#it wouldn't make sense for her to leave that new life behind in the end
