How to be the Chosen One - By Face Park (8.5/10)

An impoverished, uneducated northern nation. It's the ideal place for a sun god cult! The world building in this one is the real highlight, and our selfish "god" protagonist is a treat. Nobody has any morals.

A sad nation needs a rallying cry. Abroria adores the one true god, who gave them three blessings. The unbeatable Sun King, farmland that can produce life in the dead of winter, and a spring that never freezes. Without these miracles gifted by god Abroria would not exist.

Sunwon is a selfish and bored social diva from the modern era. Nothing excites him and he sleeps around just to feel something. He's not exactly an inspiring protagonist.

When he awakens in Abroria he tries to slide into his role. He wants to be a cult leader. He wants power and intriguing politics and lusty servants.

His desires don't come without a cost.

The young king thinks he is a fraud. Sunwon does indeed make a terrible first impression. He kinda showed up at the worst possible time. Corruption in the church is at an all time high. Zealots punish the unworthy in the streets. The starving get no assistance from the church, unless they are "truly devoted". Worst of all the Dawn Temple is always warm. A wasteful and ridiculous amount of resources go into making the church buildings comfortable. Lavish. It's not an exaggeration to say there is no middle class in Abroria. Priests consider themselves higher than knights, and Sunwons arrival makes their arrogance even worse.

King Albis grapples with....alot. Sunwon looks just like the promised God. Down to the belly tattoo. Which Sunwon got because it looks hot. I'm very glad that Sunwon eventually shares the truth with the King. He is a good man, and eventually they fall in love. Sunwon isn't EXACTLY god, but based on all the legends he is most likely gods emissary. There is magic after all, and Abroria does need saving.

Vercion is the problem. When Sunwon arrives it's too late. The church is being run by a real zealot. Vercion is willing to commit genocide in Sunwons name. He believes the light of the dawn is reserved for only the most devoted.

Like him.

He is deeply insane, and Sunwon cannot ignore him forever. Vercion is too obsessive to avoid. This story can get....rough...but the political strife is written very well. Vercion isn't an enemy. He will absolutely protect Sunwon, but he's a danger to himself and everyone else...and Sunwon when he's feeling a little too nutty.

Vercion is not like the king. Sunwon cannot tell him the truth. Vercion is a very convenient weapon. A great leader and politician devoted enough to even outpower kings in the name of his god. Sunwon uses lust to bring Vercion to his side eventually, but it's a dangerous game.

Vercion will not be convinced.

Sunwon is his god.

He expects to receive favor in exchange for his lifetime of service. He's selfish and classist and mean and manipulative and I love the fact that Sunwon doesn't love him. But he's willing to use the man. It's a lot more interesting than a black and white solution.

Sure, Vercion is evil, but who else can keep the selfish nobles in check? Sure Vercion is violent, but Abroria is poor. Poor people aren't friendly. It's the awful truth. Vercion's ceremonies and services keep them obedient.

It's a trade off.

All of the heavy responsibility is offset by hot hookups with the King, and really excellent world building. Abroria isn't(?) blessed by God. There's a forest of glowing flowers in a cave under the lake. Sunwon finds it. The spell within is indeed powerful enough to warm the entire mountain.

The King thanks Sunwon for this miraculous discovery. Now that he knows the heat has a source he can hopefully till the field, until Abroria doesn't have to deal with snow year round.

Even if he's not God he did bring the king a miracle.

Sunwon tries to make the two factions play nice.

It doesn't work.

Vercion is too crazy to be reasoned with.

Sunwon also meets his ex.
