One thing about Jennifer Jareau is that she's always going to keep everything to herself, whether it's hurting her or not. For most of her life, she kept the secret of being queer to everyone; she even tried to keep it from herself. After her abduction, Jennifer broke it off with Will, chose to keep a certain distance from her friends at the BAU. She struggled with PTSD and anorexia, and she decided to keep everything to herself, again. She convinced herself she could manage everything, she can deal with what happened in her life all by herself, because it's how it's always been. Since her sister died and her dad left, she took care of herself. By the age of eleven, she had to take care of her mother, the house, and school, all of these while trying to survive in this world. Jennifer grew up quicker than everyone else in her grade, so she was often alone in school. And when she came back to a home in complete silent, she knew things weren't going to change.

So once she graduated, she made everything possible to leave as far of this city as she could. And this is how she ended up in San Diego. All she wanted was to be herself. But it only made Jennifer keep more things to herself. Here, no one knew what happened to her family, so she stopped being the dead girl's little sister. She thought that running away from all of this would solve all her problems, but new ones appeared. Jennifer is now 19, it's her second year of college and her new problem has a name. It's called Olivia. Olivia is the girl she's sharing her dorm with, but most importantly she's the girl she drunk kissed at a party last night. She was drunk, but she remembers everything. And when she woke up to see the bed next to hers was empty, she was scared of what Olivia would think, of what she would do. When the brunette came back to their room, Jennifer apologized for hours on end, blaming it on the alcohol. Olivia wasn't going to say anything; she dismissed it and acted like nothing happened. Jennifer was relieved, but it wasn't until the next day when she was all kinds of slurs written in her locker. Someone at the party saw them, and rumors never stopped since that night.

When Jennifer saw and heard all the awful things people could say about queer people, her only answer was to keep her feelings deep to herself. She dismissed everything she ever felt for her roommate, whether it was platonic or not. She distanced herself from every woman in her life, every girl friend or professor. She swore to herself she would never feel anything towards a woman ever again. She tried to force herself to date a guy from her class. It lasted just a couple of months but it was enough for the rumors to die down. That experience in college made Jennifer forbid herself for ever feeling anything towards a woman for almost two more decades.

She met Will a few years after she started at the BAU, she was around 26. Everything was easy with him, so she figured he was the right choice. And he was, for a limited time.

10 years later, Jennifer gets abducted. When she's rescued by Emily, something clicked in her mind and all she could think of was the older woman. She spent a few days at home, recovering slowly from what happened, with her boyfriend next to her. But each time he tried to talk about what happened to her, she closed off more and more. Jennifer couldn't have a night of sleep without multiple nightmares, she was barely eating and she was losing energy more and more each day. After almost two weeks of Will constantly putting pressure on her to talk, she decided to ask him to leave. She couldn't do this anymore. She's always been dealing with her problems by herself; it's not going to be any different now than she's an adult.

Will left a week ago and she's now finally back to work. No one knows what's going on in her head and she's grateful no one is asking questions, except Emily. And strangely enough, Jennifer can't lie to her or try to dismiss her feelings. 18 years ago, she swore to herself she would never be close to a woman like that again, she would never open up to anyone because it hurts her more than it's doing any good, or so she thinks. When Emily asked how she was doing, they were still in the BAU offices. She felt her heart beats faster, and something in her wanted to talk, to tell her everything, but it wasn't the place. Not that she didn't feel safe, but their coworkers are still in the building and she doesn't want them to hear some of the things she wants to talk about. So she asks the brunette to come by her place, get a drink and maybe, if Jennifer is ready, she will open up to her friend.

Two hours and an empty bottle of red wine later, Emily popped the question again and this time Jennifer couldn't skip it, but she could still lie.

“I'm fine.”

“No you're not. Try again Jayje.”

“It's nothing that I can't deal with Em. I've been on surviving mode since I was a kid, it's nothing different.”

“What do you mean?” Emily's tone was surprised, because it was the first time Jennifer expressed something from her past. There was no going back now, the blonde knew it was time for her to open up, or she wouldn't survive this.

She kept everything bottled up for three decades, every single pain, every trauma she went through; she kept it all to herself. But tonight, she realized she didn't have to anymore. She let herself trust the woman in front of her; she let herself feel everything she tried to hide for all those years. Jennifer told her everything, from Roslyn to Olivia to everything that happened in their job.

And for the first time in what felt like an eternity, Jennifer fell asleep in someone’s arms, finally able to rest for the entire night.

Opening up to someone was the hardest thing she might have done. She broke barriers she didn't even know she built. But tonight, it saved her life.
