Have you seen that one TikTok trend?

“My boyfriend wants to show you (special interest) and you BETTER say it’s cool. Come on, baby” and their adorably excited partner proceeds to yap about something they really like for the rest of the video?

Shane isn’t really into the whole social media thing. He’s got faceless profiles with zero posts, no bio, and like four followers. Marnie. The farmer. Sam. Emily. He’s just here to look at posts about chickens and Gridball and laugh at stupid dad-esque memes and videos. The most activity on his profiles (that are all private) is Marnie tagging him in pictures that he would rather not be posted. Whatever.

The farmer, on the other hand, makes social media about their life on the farm often. They have a consistent upload schedule and a pretty big audience. Shane doesn’t understand. He especially doesn’t understand when the farmer brings up posting a video of him talking about his chickens.

Serious? Him?

No.

Except, he can’t say no to their puppy dog eyes and pouty lip. Begrudgingly, he agrees to whatever they ask of him. Muttering under his breath the entire time about how stupid this is.

One afternoon, the farmer sets up their phone in the chicken coop, leaning against the wooden beams set up on top of a nesting box. Sun-stained overalls decorated with soil and dust from a long day of work. They press record, immediately speaking:

“My boyfriend wants to show you some of his chickens. You BETTER think they’re cool and you BETTER be nice to him. Come on, baby.”

The farmer steps aside, beckoning Shane to step forward. They’re seen behind him, a serious expression spread across their face. Arms crossed over their chest. Shane has this sheepish little smile, holding Charlie under one arm, a blue chick in his opposite hand. Shoulders tense. Cheeks flushed in an embarrassed blush.

“This is Charlie,” he raises his elbow to gesture at the chicken resting peacefully against him. “She’s a, uh, Orpington chicken. Shes a part of the very first clutch I hatched. Four years ago. She’s very friendly. Loves to be pet and held. She’s not really allowed in the house, but sometimes when (farmer) isn’t home, we watch Gridball or play video games together. She’s really good at teaching newly hatched clutches how to survive. Or, I guess you can call them Broods at that point. Hehe. Or Peeps. (Farmer) and my… my kid really like to call them peeps.”

“Peeps is cute!” Farmer chimes in, face still serious. Arms still crossed.

“Yeah. Yeah, peeps is cute.” He mumbles, looking over at the loafing blue chick resting peacefully in his hand. “This little guy is named Planetarium. My, uh, kid decided to name her after a paint swatch we saw like three years ago. She uh… yeah. She’s a part of the fourth brood of chicks I’ve cross-bred with the help of our local wildlife scientist. I haven’t really named the breed yet, but my little chick is probably gonna insist it’s something ridiculous.”

The farmer pipes in: “She’s a visionary!”

Shane looks back at the farmer, who nods encouragingly for him to keep going. “There’s been a lot of trial and error with these little guys, but the first successful brood is two and a half. Each hen lays between 125 and 180 eggs per year, we’re estimating that they’ll cap around 200 at most. Uh, yeah. I think that’s it. The blue guys are really friendly and docile when they’re young. The older ones just… I don’t know, vibe?”

Shane looks back at the farmer, eyebrows scrunched together as if he didn’t know what to do next. “Are you done?” They whisper, stepping closer to place a hand on his bicep. He nods. “Good job, baby.” They kiss his cheek in passing, picking up the phone.

“You better leave a nice comment,” the farmer threatens the camera, holding up a fist before the video cuts off.

Word around the Tumblrs lately has been interest in Shane's punk outfit from Emily's Eight Heart "Clothing Therapy" Event. And FOLKS. FOLKS. You know I've been obsessed. This was supposed to just be a sketch but I got caught up in it and had to finish it. And SunshineyRosie said fairyrose tattoo for Jas and I HAD TO.
