Tragedy! You set out to read a negative review of a piece of media you dislike, only to find that the critic is being completely unfair to it and making a bunch of bad, unsupportable arguments.
[ID: a realistic digital painting of Gwen from BBC Merlin over an olive green background. Gwen is in 3/4 view, shown from the waist up. She has a soft, neutral expression on her face. She is wearing a purple linen dress with a natural linen apron and a natural linen corset embroidered with flowers and animals, and her hair is down.]
One of my least favourite dialogue tropes is when a man tells a woman, âYou canât do thatâ or âI wouldnât do that if I were youâ and she says, âWhy? Because Iâm a woman and therefore too weak to handle this/canât take care of myself?â or something to that effect and the guy replies with, âNo, because everyone who tried that ended up with a bullet in their brainâ or something equally reasonable and not gender-specific that paints him as the rational not sexist guy and the woman as an irrational paranoid feminist who searches for sexism in everything. This whole scenario is built on the idea that sexism is over and womenâs fears and suspicions donât have a leg to stand on. Itâs also self-congratulatory pseudofeminism bc itâs supposed to make the viewer/reader/listener feel that in this specific work of fiction women are treated respectfully and as equal with men.
characters in their 30's and older exploring their sexuality and discovering themselves beyond their teens and twenties is so important and beautiful and worth telling
âthe problem is its never gonna be what all the fans wantâ imo the problem is the majority of fans have bad fucking taste like. if you write a story with the intent to keep editing it in line with what fans want youâre gonna end up with a shitty story. obviously you can take in criticism from early access but once you publish the thing you shouldnât constantly be retconning characterization wtf. good god
the next time you hesitate to leave a comment on a fic remember that I go back and read all the comments I get on my fic whenever I'm feeling down and it makes me feel so much better
