What makes one human?

Is it the tangle of skin, blood, nerve and bone? Are they less human, if they're more chrome than organic? Or is it the feelings, memories, all encapsulated in the electrical impulses that fire off in their brains?

It's one of her interview questions for admission, years ago. Yeoreum lets her eyes drag across the panel of interviewers. There's no one answer, she thinks. Humanity cannot be preserved in anything not human, as much as they try. She recalls the codex of humanity, the blank pages abandoned in the herculean face of the task.

Now, she thinks humanity's defined by the gentle anger that bubbles under her skin, the ever-constant feeling of discomfort that tightens her chest, when Heo Yewon comes visiting.

Her intercom buzzes, and Yeoreum's stomach sinks a little. "Come on up, Wonnie." She straightens up and surveys her surroundings. She'd skipped out on the end of her last class to clean up before Yewon's visit, but 30 minutes is far from enough to get her home up to the other's impossible standards. 30 years might not even do the trick, but the floor's clean and everything's put away, so Yeoreum decides to take her little victories.

Hand on the doorknob, she pauses for a second. A deep, steadying breath before opening it. "You made it!"

sparknotes background: 2nd & youngest child of the bans. mom's a little bit in debt because she's got a love for get-rich-quick schemes, and daddio kicks the bucket before she hits double digits. at least she's got her older brother to rely on!

decides early on, somewhere between their power being shut off & eating shitty synth food 3x a day, that being poor is not for her, and so she studies like hell. eventually gets into med school 🎉🎉, but by this point, she's old enough and experienced enough class inequality to be over the glittry promise of astra.

now, she's just trying to do what she can to stay above the poverty line. it's really just a constant game of reverse limbo, not helped much by her bi-weekly binge drinking sessions that end with her blacked out in the worst of places.

currently employed at apollo med as an unimpressed + underpaid receptionist, but she's there to see the grisly scenes. occasionally picks up extra shifts at world diner for extra $$, because her manager was rly nice and let her study when she was working there as a high-schooler.

used to do a little bit of racing on the side, but quit since she was caught by her brother. misses the extra change she got from it & misses the adrenaline rush even more. bike's her most prized possession, along with being probably the most expensive thing she owns.

personality-wise? always on the go, because she'll be forcibly caught by sleep debt if not. leg shaker now and 4ever. when devices fuck up, u smack them to get them to work; yeoreum thinks that the same applies to people. grudgingly optimistic, but also a realist. just bc of the whole, like, being alive thing. makes the worst choices for the plot of it all, because, she's got misplaced faith it'll be fine in the end.
