Caleb Wood has made all sorts of great short films but I enjoy his experiments the most. His passion for drawing comes through so strongly, it makes even short clips like this incredibly inspiring to watch.

Peter Millard's animation is totally unique, weird and often laugh out loud hilarious, made even more so by how completely confident and assured it is in its weirdness. You don't question it, it's not fucking around. It's in your face, crazy and incredible.
It totally and utterly embraces the magic of animation, where you can make anything do ANYTHING. If you can do that, why not do that?!

Gorgeous, expressive animation from Karolina Glusiec. This is seriously one of my favourite things I've seen in ages.

I’m not so much sad that I was let go as I am sad that they gave up on a medium that, if given the right treatment, could be a viable product once again.

This trailer from independent Spanish studio Headless Productions is original, funny and vibrant. The design is gorgeous, the story intriguing.
When casual viewers (and by this I mean not 'animation fans') talk about blockbuster animation, many seem to struggle with identifying who it was made by. Pixar, Disney and occasionally Dreamworks are the names thrown around most. And you can understand why, because most of it looks like it could all have been designed by the same committee of people.
That seems like such a wasted opportunity. Just a quick flick through any of the art books of the biggest animated films from the last few years shows a wealth of concept drawings and designs with easily as much beauty and uniqueness as this trailer promises. Yet what comes out the other end is all much of a muchness. Incredibly well done, yes. But I can't help but think that with the immense amount of skill spread throughout the big CG studios, one of them could stand to take a risk and make something truly beautiful.

This moving short from Jean-Charles Mbotti Malolo is full of lovely, gently humorous detail and a lot of character, particularly in the beautifully animated dance sequence.

Love this clip by Mathilde Parquet from her short film 'Louis', it's so expressive. Messy and angry and full of life.

Every year the students from Gobelins do incredible things in these short films that precede other screenings at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. This one, by Marlene Beaube, Marion Bulot, Thibaud Gayral, Guitty Mojabi and Raphaelle Stolz, is my favourite. A whole intriguing, fun, beautiful world created in the space of half a minute.

“[on the future of hand-drawn animation] I’m actually not that worried. I wouldn’t give up on it completely. Once in a while there are strange, rich people who like to invest in odd things. You’re going to have people in the corners of garages making cartoons to please themselves. And I’m more interested in those people than I am in big business.”
