All the terminology relating to tech and the Internet is English, and one of the endearing features of the French public broadcasting in Canada is that every time they use an English neologism they have to immediately perform a ritual penance where they apologize and grope for a French translation, whether sanctioned or improvised, and so this comes up all the time in that context.
Often this is sort of dry but when the English word is already stupid it has a lot of comic potential. I've previously heard "doomscrolling" translated as d茅filement morbide, which is already great -- you must understand that the speakers grab at these terms like drowning sailors grasping for floating debris -- but today I heard it translated as d茅filement funeste, which is just impossibly charming

my favourite genre of sff where there's So Much Gender happening, but it's all kind of incidental to the main plot (Destroying The Empire)

Part 3, Chapters 2-5
Stormclouds always sticks out in my memory as a really fun chapter to play. Chapters with very specific objectives are great, but sometimes I just want a big wide-open field.
Love that a bunch of random people show up at the same time as the merchant caravan--it's nice to have Nephenee back, at least.
Soren saving Ike's honor from Aimee, lol.
Levaillllll
Naesala not-so-subtly hinting that Tibarn still doesn't have a reason to trust him. Oops.
The emulator started lagging right when the Beignon Central Army showed up, which had the side effect of giving them a fucked up and evil theme tune.
Poor Ranulf :(
Even leaving aside Zelgius's reputation and Levail's tendency to hero-worship knights, you can see how relieved Levail is when someone actually willing to take charge and ignore the political infighting shows up. I get why he fell in love immediately.
"Naesala betrayed us? Again?" might be the funniest line in the game. What were you expecting.
Tibarn saying he's glad that Ike and Ranulf still hang out <3
And Reyson!
I'm still using Heather, which is new and fun. She's not bad! And I'm supporting her with Nephenee, even if the game doesn't have actual support conversations.
Ike's Res is going to be a serious problem.
The Ranulf-Zelgius duel is so good. Impeccable way to deepen Zelgius's characterization (this is definitely one of the more extreme examples of the games' running theme of people getting lured away from their responsibilities by an individual duel). And of course, it's actually the second time they've fought...
I am so normal about Zelgius. He's only been my blorbo for *checks notes* seventeen years.
God, poor Ranulf, though. How did he get stuck with the task of fighting one of the best swordsmen on Tellius to a standstill less than a week after a fight with Skrimir that left him with broken bones?
Good thing there's magical healing, I guess. And he's recovered enough to tag along in the next chapter. Time to glue him and Ike together for that A support.
I gave Ike Blossom in an attempt to fix (or at least mitigate) the Res situation, we'll see if that helps at all.
Plotwise these chapters are some of my absolute favorites in the game. Everything with Zelgius (and Levail!), the Beignon politics going on in the background, mmmm.
Love that Zelgius, faced with an extremely unfavorable situation, turns the trick his opponents used last chapter back around on them. And gets out of a situation where he's being forced into a battle he doesn't want with the absolute minimum number of casualties, too.
Levail protesting that the senator's plan is madness (and Zelgius shutting him up for his own good)--I'm really curious how long he's been the commander of Gaddos's army, because he has an idealistic streak a mile wide. You'd think an extended period of working for Lekain of all people would have beaten that out of him.
And this completes the triptych of Skrimir-Ranulf-Zelgius duels.
The little protective step closer to Zelgius that Levail takes when Ike and Ranulf show up... I adore him.
I've never had a sword user make it to Marshal, so I don't know if it's just their animation also, but hmmm, Zelgius's attack animation sure looks exactly like the Black Knight's. Lol.
I know I said that these are some of my favorite chapters plotwise, but it's a really good sequence of objectives too. I love a siege chapter, and the 'cause chaos in the senators' camp' one is great too.
I'm trying to mostly put effort into people I know I'll be taking to the endgame (Nephenee, Soren, Ranulf), so it's a pleasant surprise when I remember that a bunch of other units (Oscar, Haar, Gatrie) are also good.
'People calling Levail a lapdog' count: 1
I'm content to go for the defend objective in chapter 5 rather than defeat the boss, but killing Lombroso would certainly be satisfying.
Lovely to have Reyson back on the team again.
Almost everyone grew at least one level in chapter 5 (Ike almost grew two even with Blossom...and his Res went up, so it's working!), except for poor Heather, who got stuck in proximity to a bunch of heavy armor she couldn't damage while supporting Nephenee.
Sigrun <3
No one is having a good time at the moment! Though I guess Zelgius could have gone and rescued Sephiran immediately if he really had to. Though that would have given the game away a bit.
Convenient that both Izuka and the Black Knight mysteriously disappeared right after Pelleas's coronation. Did no one at all smell a rat?
I am really, really not looking forward to the next chapter.

Watch City/Porchfest day is one of my favorite days of the year. I'm hanging out in my room in an 1830s outfit from earlier, recovering from several hours in the pouring rain explaining the joys of swords to people, listening to the two different bands playing within earshot of my apartment.
#it's a slightly confusing listening experience but the one covering dancing queen is currently drowning out the other one lol#i'm glad the weather cleared up for the bands but like. could it have cleared up a few hours earlier
