Thinking about early days of the expedition where Crozier is still writing to Ross, missing him, telling him he wishes he was there rather than the two idiots Crozier is stuck with. Thinking about Crozier/Fitzjames hatesex where Crozier is thinking about Ross. And then they get stuck in the pack. No more letters. And Crozier hates Fitzjames even more during those months because he’s given up, his drinking is worse, he fully believes they’re all going to die out there and he’s trying to come to terms with how avoidable it was, with his surety that if Ross had been there this would not be happening.

Then he sobers up, gets his head on straight, realizes he doesn’t want to die out there after all and he is the only one who can do anything about that. And immediately after that, Carnivale, and they walk out and there is this shift in Fitzjames that makes him start to open up, start to leave his protective outer layers behind, his vanity gone, and for the first time this is his James, not the man who refused to accompany Crozier out here in favor of settling down and leaving the Navy behind. James Fitzjames supplants James Ross for the first time, is real to Crozier for the first time. And then he dies.

And then it’s Ross who comes to find Crozier.

in my AU, Crozier rejected a marriage proposal from James Ross in 1827. Ross was like, “well we love each other and we have this great friendship besides and we could technically get married so 👉👈🥺?”

And Crozier was like “look, as much as i have the same feelings for you, you’re asking me to stop being a polar explorer, leave the navy forever, live as a woman, and definitely risk a giga-scandal just to be your partner and I am not doing that.”

They break up. Ross is a gentleman and he takes the breakup well and they stay friends. Crozier is heartbroken, though. He’s hurt that James Ross’s only two options are marriage or platonic friendship.

This is part of why he starts his FWB Thing with Blanky. He’s like “I’m going to hang out with (have sex with) my OTHER friend who DOESN’T want to marry me, and maybe I won’t be so pissed off anymore + if James Ross is jealous, then GOOD”

This adds so much flavor to the whole business with Sophia because Crozier has literally been in her shoes of having to turn down a marriage proposal from someone he loves because of reasons

But he does not make the connection! he’s like “maybe I should keep asking”

This is a fun one... I don't tend to dig as deep into the outer reaches of the muster lists as you do (it's one of the things I really admire about you), but I do have some big thoughts about characters who have barely any lines.

Henry Thomas Dundas Le Vesconte:

I've told you this before in private messages, but upon rewatch, I've discovered a sort of... characterization anchor? for my headcanons about our favorite casually mutinous, grey-haired Victorian babe—namely, that no matter how little he respects some of the people above him on the chain of command, he has a deep respect for the existence of the chain of command and the structures and regulations of the Royal Navy. He may not think Crozier or Little are fit for command, but he's very aware that they outrank him, and his actions and behaviors reflect this.

My unpopular headcanon is that Little didn't kill him. I don't know how this got to be considered almost a given fact by the fandom. I like the concept, but I don't know if Little would have been able to bring himself to do that.

Sir James Clark Ross:

This is probably a common headcanon, but I ship him and Francis Crozier as platonic AND romantic AND a secret third thing. I just know they were doing Left Hand Of Darkness activities on the Antarctic ice. Fellas, is it gay to lick the ice from your buddy's eyelid and lashes when his eye has frozen shut? How about if you've found the thing you don't earn, and can't keep, and often don't even recognize at the time... together?
