I really intended for You Were Marked to be more smutty and less angsty. When it was in the planning stages Marathel’s situation was less dire and certainly nowhere near the mother-my-god-let’s-try-to-kill-the-OC. Somewhere along the way I pulled a rotting lump of deep pain from somewhere in the abyss of my psyche and kept asking myself How Can I Make This More Upsetting For The Unsuspecting Reader?

And why did I do that?

I’ve spent my life being a peacemaker. I was adultified as the only daughter. Everyone else could flip out, but I could not. I had to be organized, perfect, pretty, perfect grades. Not be troublesome. I was shy and introverted and bookish but I could only get positive attention by being charming and friendly and sweet. I’ve never learned “no” as a complete sentence. I felt I was only worth what service I could provide. Still feel that way, sometimes.

And isn’t that partially why we write? To give us a place to simply BE whatever? Whatever we weren’t allowed to be but still are too afraid to become?
