Week 8 Blog
My client for our project was the Student Activities Center on campus. The SAC has student workers, on average around their late teens early 20s, and also a group of workers in their 40s and 50s that we call the Pro-Staff. The Pro-Staff are the managers and bosses of the student workers, they are the ones that make the big decisions. One implementation that could potentially happen is my recommendation being passed over and not used, or if It does end up being implemented, there will be conflicting ideas about content to create and post. The student workers and the Pro-Staff have disagreed on topics before, and since the Pro-Staff may not be used to certain social media pages or trends that is happening, they may not use It to their advantage and stick to their own agenda. This could also be seen as the second topic discussed in the video that says social media initiatives fail because the organization lacks knowledge of the fundamental principles of mass collaboration. Although we could have students working on the videos and content to post, the Pro-Staff gets the final say, and they may not understand why certain things were created or why we did what we did, which goes back to the first implementation discussed earlier. At the end of the day, the age gap between pro-staff and the student employees, as well as the trust or lack there of will get in the way of creating a social media page for the Student Activities Center, since different generations have different ideas and understandings when It comes to social media.

Week 7 Blog
When implementing social media into your company, there are different things that you must do to make sure that the content that you are sharing is is developed and shared effectively. In Module 3, we looked at making sure your page and overall content is Inclusive to everyone. Having your page be inclusive to everyone creates a positive reaction from users and you will be creating a place that is safe for everyone. It creates a welcoming environment that anyone will feel accepted when interacting with your account. If you post something that isn't inclusive or may be offense to someone, not only will It have a negative impact, but It will also just "cancel" your page and company all together. Plus, things on the internet don't just go away, this will leave a negative impact for a long time.
In Module 4, we looked at building a community through your page, this goes in hand with what was discussed in module 3. being inclusive to everyone is just the start. If you make your page a safe, welcoming place, more people will feel welcomed to comment, interact, and share your page. This can help reach more users and making your page as effective as possible. But It is important to remember when and who to interact back with. Commenting back on the wrong comment or the wrong user can also lead back to the negative impacts discussed previously.
Technology and social media is big now, but it's only going to get more developed and even bigger. It's important that your social organization knows how to effectively develop and share content. The age in technology that we are in is our new reality when It comes to business, so we have to adjust accordingly and use It to our advantage.

Week 6 Blog
When reading Chapters 4 and 5 in our textbook "The Social Organization", I felt that the biggest focus when discussing community collaboration came from the sections that focused on when and where to use It. Knowing when to use community collaboration can save your company from failure and bad results. When focusing on where It is most effective to use community collaboration, It is more useful when a large group is acting independently to contribute to a bigger picture rather than in challenges that require an expert. Not even just looking at community collaboration but with anything that you post or share, It is important to know when and where to post It to make sure that It is not doing more harm than It is good. By looking at the best ways to apply information and post them, It can significantly help your company and get the results that are desired.
This weeks Hootsuite module emphasized the importance of growing an online community, but this is especially important for my client, the student activities center. By being able to connect and build a relationship with students online, you are getting more feedback on what they want to see and know more about, what they think is great and working well and what they would like to see some improvement on. Overall, you are hearing direct feedback and showing that you care about what they can do to make It better for you. By growing an online community, my client will be reaching part of their goal which is to be able to reach students on a daily basis and being able to hear from them to improve the facility for everyone.

Week 5 Blog
When looking at the article and video that we were shared, the overall theme was about privacy when we interact on social media and on websites, but our phones in general and how companies are taking advantage of our so called privacy and using It to better their business. In general, businesses need the data from the websites we visit, the accounts we follow, and what we look at in general on different apps and platforms. This helps them to target you specifically and better the app for their company so that It is more addicting to you. It is said on a lot of the apps we use that we have our privacy, but at the end we don't. Nothing is private anymore, we even think sometimes that our phones are "listening to us" even when we aren't on them just because of the ads that pop up on our phone. Pop up ads was another topic of discussion and important to business models in most companies because It is a way for the companies to make money, and also allows both companies (the app and the company with the ad) to get you to stay on the site longer or to click and look at more products or pages. In general, the business model that companies use, and just the company in general need the data of what you are interested in to draw you in more and make their app more appealing, or more addicting.

Week 4 Blog 2
The article "Three reasons junk news spreads so quickly across social media looks at algorithms, advertising, and exposure. When It comes to algorithms, especially when you are working in a business can be very beneficial. You get insight on you customers and potential customers, what interests them and what doesn't, what they want to see more of, etc. But I personally don't like them and how they interact in my life. I want to be able to see all kinds of different things and information on my page, even if It is something that I may not be interested in, not just what the algorithm thinks and knows what I'm used to seeing. For example, on my instagram "explore" page, I don't really get to explore much besides what I already am used to seeing, because the algorithm is only showing me things that It knows I like, this is how many biases form, because you aren't getting the other perspective. Advertising also is a great way for companies to get their business and products seen and known, but the way that certain pages are doing It now can be frustrating and lead to false statements. When CNN or People magazine post, the post a picture, sometimes with a crazy headline that gets you to click on the post, and then has the caption "read about It in the link in our bio." Sometimes people do, where they are getting certain information given to them, but other times the viewer will just leave It at what they saw, and believe a headline that isn't even true, It was just looking to draw you in. Biases are also done through exposure. I agree with the study that is in the article about how you are more likely to share something if It is what you believe. As I said earlier, this can create a bias because you aren't seeing the other perspective, and the exposure of your beliefs can lead to crazy news that may not even be true. It is hard to stray away from these things when 1. companies are made to have these be out for you and done without you noticing, and 2. it's hard to change old habits. But in general just being able to do your own research and using specific words so that you get the other perceptive, can help to lead to the truth.

Week 4 Blog 1
When It comes to being a social media consultant, you have to be able to listen to your client and communicate well with them, be creative, and overall a good awareness.
You have to be able to communicate your clients about their wants, needs, concerns, etc. To be able to do an effective job, you have to listen to your client and really understand what It is that they are watching. If you don't communicate well with your clients or listen and comprehend what they need from you, you could get the message completely differently than your client intended and do something that wasn't needed or wanted by the client. You also have to be creative when It comes to what you are creating and working with, so you can provide new ideas and content. Finally, you have to have awareness so that you know once again what is needed by the client, but also what is appropriate and what isn't. What is going to work and what isn't.
When looking at my professional social media, I have a LinkedIn which I believe is a great start. But things that I can do in the future and and strategies that I can have would be to connect with more employers and businesses. Reaching out to them, interacting with them more, and meeting different people apart of their teams and connecting with them as well. I can also keep my page more up to date, and in general tend to It more than I normally do now. Doing this I believe will help me to have more of a presence.

Big Data
After watching The Social Dilemma, It was crazy to me all of the things that the employees of the social media apps have noticed and were saying regarding our phones. The biggest thing that stood out to me during the documentary was how you don't know how vulnerable your mind is. It was a common trend throughout the film to that persuasive technology is used to plant unconscious habits, and how these apps can influence behaviors and emotions without being aware. The algorithms that the apps have are able to predict everything: what we will do, where we will go, and what videos will keep us watching. It can also convince people of things that are wrong. An example from the documentary was that the earth is flat. But these false statements can lead to dangerous actions. For example, a guy brought a gun to a pizza place because he thought there was a trafficking ring in the basement. The tech industry knows of these problems and weren't willing about the fact that their apps are so addictive . These apps are making people question what is normal, and have thoughts that they normally wouldn't have. That is what is so dangerous about big data and these algorithms, they are affecting us without us even noticing.
At the end of the film, It talks about how technology will be even more integrated in our lives. It said that technology creates chaos and a lack of trust. It creates loneliness, outrage, all around bringing out the worst in society and making It unavailable to heal itself. But also at the end of the film, It was discussed ways to help deal with these problems which I agree with. To start, the companies that run these apps need to be more accountable and work to make their apps healthier and less addictive. When It comes to a personal level, I can turn off notifications and have my phone on do not disturb so I am not distracted by my phone lighting up every few minutes. I can also put time limits on the apps so that I am more cautious of how much time I spend on these apps.

Social Media Experiment
As discussed in the previous blog, social media is used all the time in my every day life, like I said it's my main source of information. But I never really knew how much I was on It or how much I used each app in my day to day life. I get the notifications every Sunday saying how much my screen time went up or down for the week, but besides that, I was blind to how much my phone and more specifically social media took up my life.
I started the experiment with how much I was on my phone in a normal day. The most important things from this data was that I spent 5 hours and 18 minutes on my phone with 4 hours and 23 minutes being on "Social" apps. I spent 2 hours and 12 minutes on Tik Tok, 1 hour and 3 minutes on Snapchat, and 45 minutes on Instagram. I noticed a correlation between the apps I was spending the most time on with the notifications that I was getting throughout the day. For snapchat, It was that a friend had texted me. For Tik Tok, It was that someone had sent me a video, liked or commented, or just in generally posted a video. In general the notification just drew me in to the app. For my experiment, I decided to turn off all of my notifications for the day, to see if my social media screen time would go down and by how much.
With my notifications off, my new time for being on my phone for a day was 3 hours and 24 minutes. I Did this experiment on a Friday and I happened to be driving home this day, so the most time spent on an app was Maps which had 55 minutes. I do not believe that this variable affected the experiment at all because the time spent driving home would be the same amount of time I would spend in class for a day, and would not be on my phone anyways. I spent 38 minutes on snapchat, 26 minutes on instagram, and 22 minutes on Tik Tok. The biggest change compared to the data taken at the beginning of the experiment was that my time spent on Tik Tok went down by almost 2 hours.
Doing this experiment was both difficult and refreshing. It was nice to not be attached and drawn to my phone at all times of the day, but at the same time It made me feel a little anxious and curious if someone had texted me or sent me something and I would find myself going into those apps to look at times. At the end of the day, I was not sucked in by the notifications and the urge of clearing all of them or the urge of seeing what someone had said to me. At the beginning of the experiment, I knew that my screen time would go down I was just not sure by how much. It's interesting to see how notifications really affects you and your attachment to your phone and specific apps.

Week 2 Blog Post #1
When thinking about how my life would be without social media, It honestly is hard to picture It because that's where I get all of my information. It's how I find out news like what is going on within our government, where I find out who won the football game from the other day, and where I find out about celebrity news. It's also how I keep up with friends and family, especially ones that I don't see very often. It is something that I am constantly checking and am on. In the video, the speaker discussed how the notifications on our screen is distracting to us and is like an alert of something that we need to check right away. I agree with this, at least with my own use of social media because whenever I see a notification, It bothers me that there is a red notification saying that I have something to see, so It makes me look at It right away compared to when there isn't any notifications I don't feel as pressured to be on those apps.
Having social media so available to me is something that I believe has its pros and cons. I have insight and knowledge on things that I do not think I would know about if It weren't for social media. But on the other hand a lot of the connections that I have are reliant on social media, and social media (your phone in general) is very distracting when trying to do basic tasks like homework or just having a simple conversation with someone.
Like I said in my introduction post, my family goes camping a lot and a lot of times at the campground there isn't service so I can't check social media or be on my phone. It is a love hate relationship when this happens because I feel like I am constantly missing something, but It is also very relaxing to take a break from social media and to be connected with something other than my phone. When It comes to my social media use, I would want to be more cautious about my screen time, and the time in general that I spend on each app. I would also want to keep my notifications off or have my phone on do not disturb more so that I am not on my phone as much and can be more focused on the things in my life like homework or just hanging out and spending time with my friends without any distractions.

All About Me
Hello everyone! My name is Hannah Martin. I am a senior graduating in the spring with a major in Human Resource Management and a Minor in information systems. I am from Trenton, Michigan which is a small town about 20 minutes south of Detroit. Over the summer I had an internship at BASF in Wyandotte, and at the moment will be going back to work there after I graduate. This company is a place where you can work your way up in positions and that is what I plan on doing depending on the opportunities that are given to me. I love to be outdoors and do outdoor activities like camping. I currently work at the Student Activities Center on campus and have been an employee there for a couple years now as a Fitness Specialist.
A company that I believe has great use of their social media is Starbucks. I admire the aesthetics that they use depending on the season, and how the promote their drinks, both ones that they have year round and ones that are only on the menu for a limited time. They show off their products so that they target different demographics and celebrate things that the World may be celebrating at the time.
I am excited to be taking this class so that I can explore how different companies use social media to their advantage when promoting a product or putting their company in the publics eye.
