The Sleeping Dictionary
Firstly: holy fuck was it hard to find this film. I don't know if it's my location or what but (despite what google claims) it wasn't on any streaming services. The only version of it on the internet that I found had a loud Russian(?) dub over it. So I didn't want to waste my time on that. Ended up managing to get my hands on a second-hand copy of the dvd from a fellow Hugh fan on vinted o7. Even still, it's taken me months to pluck up the courage to boot up my player and put the disc in. Aside from being busy, I just haven't wanted to watch this film. But I have wanted more Hugh so...
Reading the description of this film, I see it's set in Sarawak! Which is like, almost where I'm from??? kind of, since it's part of Malaysia now. I'm Malaysian, even though I don't live there anymore. And it's set in the 1930s. I literally did my EPQ (at least part of it) on the British colonisation of the lands that are now Malaysia (including Sarawak) so I'm quite excited to watch this. Also the setting of the film like, what are you doing in my country??? I always feel like that yk, like London is one thing because it's a big famous city but fucking Sarawak??? Malaysia??? Even KL??? Whenever I see my homeland mentioned in Western film/media I'm just like, wth are you doing here??? Haunting me??? I'm sorry I left you???
Okay I watched the trailer and I knew this was set during the British colonisation but like, I did not expect it to be that bad. Jeez. Love Hugh but some of the films he's in are just dogshit. I've also read some reviews and uh, not looking good for this film. But I literally only care about Hugh anyway so.
tbh I don't think I've ever been Sarawak, unless we went when I was very young and don't remember it. I think I have some family over by Borneo? But my whole family was from Sabah. We live near KL now but I think they came from more north, like Alor Setar I believe (at least one side), and I know my Ama grew up in the Kampung over there.
Hugh is pretty, as always.
THE BRITISHNESS. HE'S EVEN MORE ENGLISH THAN NORMAL YES.
I'm going to try and give this film the benefit of the doubt...because it was made in 2003 and set in 1936...
OH I'M SO DISTRACTED BY HUGH'S HAIR. IT'S SO PERFECTLY COMBED. HE LOOKS SO GOOD. He's every inch a privately educated school boy.
"Primitive people"...no comment on that...
God he's pretty. blah blah idc what he's saying I'm too busy staring at him. Hugh's voice is so soothing. And he definitely has a more pronounced posh British accent in this.
Houses in the Kampung :))) built on stilts because of the weather (flooding). Now I'm reminded of Kampung Boy (this Malaysian comic, loved to read it).
ngl the haircut really made him look quite ...lesbian? in that shot. this is why i have so much gender envy for him.
Jessica Alba is of Mexican descent??? Why did they have her play this role???
whatever he's saying, that outfit looks so good on him (tbf everything does) but those shortssss.
oh that sleep-mussed hair and flushed face.
uh the concept is...misogynistic and dehumanising...and the fact she isn't even asian...
the very white accent and pronunciation...but hugh saying anything in malay has me...shfashahkjfskhjfdas.
tbh the writing seems pretty bad.
ngl this is reminding me I really need to brush up on my BM. went back recently to visit family and it's so annoying bc every time words get more incomprehensible to me i hate it :(
??? why is it so rushedddd
william william henry stephen henry richard john..eh! (horrible histories??? :0)
hugh took his top off!!! lovely chest view right there!!! (i am shameless about this man).
I was not expecting boobs? in my face?
those stupid hats
okay this is just a sex scene montage
oh but hugh in a tux...and christmas music in the background?
I have to admit I went into this with low expectations. Having watched the trailer, I wasn’t hyped about this movie - I’m not going to lie the only reason I watched it was for Hugh. Look, I’m speaking as a Malaysian person (albeit from Sabah, not Sarawak). And I can say that this movie is grossly inaccurate in its portrayal of the ibans. It disgraces the Sarawak community, being exceedingly negative and derogatory in its portrayal and perpetuating harmful stereotypes of a ‘primitive’ people with negative portrayals of the culture. The entire premise of the movie with the ‘Sleeping Dictionary’ is fetishisation and bastardisation of a real traditional courting method. The way they present it as an ‘Asian woman throwing herself at the white coloniser’ is entirely cringe-worthy. I found the writing too rushed which makes the plot feel jumpy. And it doesn’t really make sense. One of the major gripes I have with this movie is that they picked Alba, a white-passing American of Mexican heritage, to play…a native Malay??? Doesn’t suit at all. It’s clear this movie was made for a white audience. What a shame.
My only positives are the personal ones I have concerning Hugh Dancy: his hair, the accent, literally everything about that perfect man. And him speaking a bit of Malay…never thought I’d hear my country’s language from his mouth but god has it made me a bit feral.

Rogue One
Okay so I wasn’t planning to watch this next but quite a few of my friends are SW fans and we had disney+ where we were staying on holiday and this has Mads so obviously I had to convince everyone to watch it with me!
OMG THE HAIR PLEASE.
Now I really want to watch Andor. Time to add that to the list I guess.
i love the droid. the droids are the best. the delivery of the lines is perfect. good humour.
i'm also a big fan of blind guy. bamf characters like that are aweeeeesooooomeeee.
NO HALFWAY THROUGH AND HE’S ALREADY DEAD :(((
Okay so I wasn't paying much attention the first half of the film (apart from when Mads was on screen) mostly because I was focused on the cookies we were making... they did taste good even if my decorating skills are very, uh, lacking (i go for quantity of icing and sprinkles over quality of design).
But anyways, now I've resumed, I have to comment on the costumes <333 love them! all the rebel alliance shtick. this is getting me back into SW fics, and maybe convincing me I need to actually properly rewatch the originals and prequels!
And the sfx...gorgeous! the planets, the SHIPS, just, everything sci-fi. i love it all so so much. it's just endlessly cool and impressive. i wanna experience it so bad. closest thing i can think of is the vader immortal vr series..wish they'd made that a proper game ugh.
AH THE SET UP FOR A NEW HOPE THE ONE SW MOVIE I REMEMBER!!!
see im recognising planet names and references from fanfiction... my knowledge base for this franchise is probably very skewed...
and the score :)))) sw music always hits!
okay is the empire's military tactic just to...rely on numbers???? like just send out waves and let them get slaughtered??? i mean it's in character for them but so ineffective??? and shit tactics??? no wonder troopers are easy to mow down...
THREEPIO AND ARTOO CAMEO HELL YEAH.
but also like im wondering about accents in the sw universe now. like variations between planets, on planets, so on. obviously there's common languages but like, surely the accents are way more diverse than what our films would represent + more unimaginable to our human ears? would luke be like, southern or something? leia scandinavian? or rp? that kind of feels core-ish. okay i know it's not that deep but it's INTERESTING.
WAIT A GODDAMN MINUTE I KNOW HIM. was that stupid deaths guy??? horrible histories simon farnaby??? (okay i googled it i was RIGHT it was him. knew it. even through that helmet. i spotted that face and knew INSTANTLY. oh and the character name haha. it's just him but anagramised.)
OH DAMN. WHAT AN ENDING.
actually good star wars film :D
oh so that's how they got the plans. neat.
i do have to say the cgi of the dead actors is really uncanny valley. just no.
overall one of the better star wars films (i think. i need to refresh my memory of some of the others). i enjoyed it at least. and mads mikkelsen is always a fun bonus (i say like i didn't watch this film specifically for him as i look upon my galen erso funko pop which is staring me down from the shelf above my desk).

i downloaded the hannibal scripts a while ago and started reading through the first one today, here are some of my favourite bits:
"A handsome, haunted man with a naive focus." — love the Will appreciation. Yes he is handsome. Hugh Dancy is so fine.
"Will Graham sits serenely amongst the carnage on a yoga mat." — ...I'm glad they took out the yoga mat ig?
"The Police Officers, Detectives, Coroners and Crime-Scene Specialists all part or stand by, averting their eyes as they intentionally avoid looking at Will Graham backwards walking through them toward the shadowy yard across the street. A Police Officer breaks protocol and sneaks a peek at Will. A SUPERIOR OFFICER snaps and points at the Officer, who quickly fixes his gaze on the ground in front of his feet." — this imagery is hilarious. Will is just a weird freak like no wonder they were all so quick to believe he was a serial killer.
"He surveys the lecture hall for social appearances." — ugh the call to Will hating socialising and merely pretending.
"There are scattered SMITTEN GLANCES tossed Will Graham’s direction, who is naturally oblivious because he is actively avoiding eye-contact with everyone" — yes, absolutely, ofc the trainees are smitten with him I mean with that face who wouldn't be + the second line just makes me laugh lmao.
"Will picks up the rhythm and syntax of Jack’s voice:" — I just love the details of Will empathising and mirroring live in conversation.
"Will continues to avoid eye contact with the Nichols."
"CAMERA REVEALS EIGHT FORMALLY STRAY DOGS staring at Winston" — huh so ig Will was meant to have 9 dogs total originally (8+Winston). I wonder why they changed that. Maybe couldn't find enough dogs.
Also; "Will is a dog collector." — lmfao.
(Referencing Abigail and GJH) "She knows her killer."
"Beverly sneaks a flirtatious smile as CAMERA FINDS Will." — Bev is a bi queen imo not surprised she too was attracted to Will.
"As fork and knife respectfully cut meat..." "...CAMERA REVEALS a handsome, professorial man in his 40s." — of course even how he cuts his meat is respectful. Also yes, Mads is handsome.
"He eyes the tissue Franklyn tosses on the side table." — the expression Mads makes in that scene has to be one of my favs. It's just so perfect.
"Hannibal sits down the pencil, but not the scalpel. Helistens to Jack, eyes drifting to the F.B.I. Agent’s jugular." — Hanni was really prepared to murder Jack there and then.
(After Jack mentions John Hopkins) "As we become aware of the steady rhythm of Hannibal’s heartbeat, his nostrils flair and his eyes dilate, as he exhales a very calm observation." — !!!Hannibal's fight-or-flight activating because he thinks Jack figured it out the same way Miriam did through the hospital records :)))
"The FRAMES OF HIS GLASSES strategically positioned to block eye contact, yet giving the impression of looking at someone." — Will has perfected the method of pretending to give a fuck.
"Hannibal notices Will avoiding looking anyone in the eye."/"Not fond of eye contact, are you?"/"Will unapologetically continues to avoid eye contact." — lmao sassy Will Graham.
"Hannibal charmingly massages the air out of the lungs to the strains of Strauss, pressing the lungs flat." — cooking human lungs has never looked so hot.
"I don’t find you that interesting."/"You will. (”changing the subject”) Agent Crawford tells me you have a knack for the monsters." — oh! I hadn't picked up on that before! Hannibal "changing the subject" but obv he's just continuing the line of conversation (to himself) on Will finding him, the monster, interesting.
"father JACOB" — so GJH goes by Jacob ig. tbf if my parents had named me 'Garret' I would use my middle name too.

Riders of Justice
It was made free to watch on ITV4 recently so that's why I'm watching this next.
Mads can pull off that beard (and what a beard it is).
Well...no one's choosing Tesla anymore. That's how you can tell it's been a couple years since this was made lol (half a decade, wow, seriously COVID and the 2020 lockdowns don't feel that long ago).
Love the camera angles (and just Mads actually being tall) + the clothing and the beard making Markus look even more like a buff army dude (which he is) but like, Mads.
Oh he ANGRY.
YES MURDER. GO MARKUS. FIGHT HIM. (I did clap. Sorry but Mads playing characters doing murder things... (Hannibal has conditioned me to like it okay)).
When Mads' characters smoke >>>>
He's a ruthless ex-soldier and I am cheering him on!
Mads is such a good actor. It's those little facial movements. He's insane at portraying all of Markus' emotions.
OH DAMN I DID NOT EXPECT THAT WOW. Okay, the plot points are coming together. Good writing. And Mads' acting is so damn good.
That scene reminds me of Mizumono and Hannibal throwing himself against the pantry door. Specifically, an interview where someone (probably Bryan I think) said it took like 5 people on the other side of the door to keep it in place. Mads strong.
I knew I recognised Otto's actor — it's Nikolaj Lie Kaas! Him and Mads are in so many Danish films together. Although tbf there's a lot of overlap in Danish casts. I'm starting to recognise others just from watching Mads films.
Anyway, good film, would recommend, surprisingly more enjoyable than I expected. Nice sound design and also Mads.

I will be watching the Sleeping Dictionary (finally!) because I managed to get my hands on a second-hand copy of the disc. I couldn't find it anywhere on the internet. I think it might be available to stream in the US maybe? But not in the UK. And my other sites I use to watch stuff normally all had this one version with this really loud Russian(?) dub over it so it was basically unwatchable. But now I have the physical media so I will be enjoying a movie night soon!
Very thankful to the fellow Hugh fan who sold it to me (I know who you are) because it also came with a copy of Tempo (so will also be watching that soon) and they let me know their dvd collection has a lot of Hugh Dancy in it lol.
I mean my hopes aren't high for the writing of this film for what I've seen from the trailer and in reviews. I'm only watching it for Hugh anyway but I fully expect to be very affronted at the cultural appropriation/ignorance/white saviour complex in it as a Malaysian myself. Because on the one hand my home country in a film with Hugh Dancy??? YES!!! But on the other, bad film...

I've been watching the voice acted stuff Mads and Hugh have done (Dorothy Returns, that one Moomins film, the Terry Pratchett short Hugh did) and I have to praise Hugh's singing in Dorothy Returns. How. Is he so talented. That song is on my spotify playlist and I go weak at the knees every time it comes up.
Anyway, I'm also currently watching Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man which is the recent 2025 series where Hugh voice Doc Ock. And I just. Even his voice is so hot. And like, Mads plays a ton of outright villains but I kinda need Hugh to play a proper stereotypical villain (I mean he's done evil/morally grey characters before like Will and Cal Roberts) but like, one like Doc Ock but not animated. I'll take the evil voice acting but if there was Hugh's face to go along with that...
I have to add that Hugh's accent in this sounds like an American version of the voice he did for Marshal Mallow (in Dorothy Returns) and also he spoke a bit of (I think) Russian and omg Hugh (or Mads) speaking other languages is just,,,,
Also this has reawakened my Marvel/spider-man hyperfixation when I SHOULD be revising. Not that I'm complaining.

The Green Butchers
Mads Mikkelsen PLUS cannibalism? Sign me up!
WHY IS HIS HAIRLINE SO FAR BACK LMFAO. also why is Mads so shiny???
So apparently Hanne made Mads wear a hat in bed whilst he had this hair lol. Which is both valid and hilarious.
Quite comedic, but I also fear my sense of humour is skewed because of, well, Hannibal and the, yk, murder and cannibalism.
Svend = Hannibal if he was a sweaty anxious butcher lol.
No but really this movie was great. Why is there so much overlap between Mads/Nikolaj Lie Kaas/Anders Thomas Jensen though??? I'm presuming the Danish film community is just That Small. These Danish films are just, always so good though. And not just because of Mads.

The Jane Austen Book Club
Haven't even started the movie yet but who tf names their kid Grigg??? What sort of name is that??? Like the writers could have picked anything, he could have been a George or an Adam or a Sam and they chose Grigg??? Is that like Greg but special??? Why???
Hugh looks utterly delectable in this. He's so babydoll!!!
HUGH. THE COSTUME DEPARTMENT, I THANK. Those tight cycling shorts, ugh. And the pan up-and-down his body??? (HIS FOREARMS) PERFECTION.
So the movie was actually quite enjoyable. A sweet romcom that got a few chuckles out of me. It was simple but cute, and I really liked the format/style of it in using the book club and each of Austen's books to tell the story. Makes me think I should go pick up something else of her's to read for myself! It's quite a happy movie, which I liked, and a good watch before bed to relax with.

Elizabeth I (2005)
It took an hour and eleven minutes but I am suddenly engaged in this. Sat up so quick the second I saw Hugh appear. His hair is so fluffy!!! He's so cute. Oh my god. Unfairly pretty man.
There's an execution going on but I don't care because Hugh is there looking devastatingly handsome. Prince Charming fr.
A man sword fighting is so hot. When it's Hugh it's even better.
It's insane how a simple change in hairstyle can alter how old someone looks so drastically. Like Hugh with fluffy curls and a fringe looks so young and then you comb them back and he looks his age (he was 30ish when filming this).
Thought I recognised that guy! It's Eddie Redmayne with greasy long hair! So he and Hugh were both together in this then in Savage Grace!
The moustache Hugh is sporting is adorable!
The beard I can't stand it why is he so fine.
Hugh Dancy + Eddie Redmayne sword fighting together in Elizabethan outfits is my new favourite thing. Also; Eddie's long hair.
He's literally the prettiest watch this just for that it won't disappoint.
It took me three days to watch this because I kept pausing to go scream into a pillow every time Hugh appeared.

The Promised Land
My first takeaway is that Mads is still as fine as ever in this.
I love Mads' accent in any language, but him speaking his native tongue is just so perfect.
I'm sorry the wigs are really funny. Mads can pull off anything, but that wig will still crack me up.
the little girl <3
This was a wonderful film. Mads was incredible and Ludvig von Kahlen was such an interesting character! They really wrote him well! It was in danish so I did take a couple of breaks from watching it instead of leaving it on in the background whilst I ate, as I normally do, for instance, so I could catch everything being said. The setting, the music — it was all a vibe! The ending was kind of bittersweet, with some characters ending up happy, others not so much. Ludvig deserves way more love though.
It made me so happy that stuck up lord got his just desserts too. Although by the end of the film it was all making me pretty emotional — anger at that asshole, I was sad at points, happily cheering Kahlen on.
The little girl in this was brilliant — the character and the young actress both!
Definitely worth a watch. I feel like most of Mads' Danish stuff is. Good film. I guess I gotta continue my streak of Danish films now, maybe it's finally time for me to watch The Hunt and make myself sad.

Mads really got me watching car commercials. Sexy, sexy man. And he even rides a motorbike in this. Clearly this is what Will and Hannibal were up to post-fall.
