My existence is always restricted

Every breath is an act of resistance

I want to scream my pride from

the tops of every mountain

and lose my mind every time

I see a rainbow in the sky

and wear my heart on my sleeve

and wear a glorious smile

of excitement to be who I am

and then

my phone rings

and it’s my brother

or my grandmother

and I pause

and I breathe

and I swallow my pride.

and then

I remove my heart from

my sleeve and shove it deep

within my closet to hide.

I slip on a mask to cover

my glorious prideful smile

and I hold my breath

until I hang up the phone.

and then

I lose myself in my community

and my found family and

the people who love me for ME

and who speak the same

prideful language as me

and who wear their colorful

hearts on their sleeves like me

and then

gut wrenching news shows

up on my socials feed

and another pastor wants to

murder us for existing

and another politician wants to

strip us of our rights

and it’s us against the world

and then

I don’t even get the chance

to suck the air into my chest

or shove my heart deep in

my closet and I don’t even

get the chance to let the tears

fall in rainbow colored streaks

before

another hand laces their

fingers through mine and

holds me tight. strength

pours from them into me

and I am not alone, never alone

and we hold our pride flags in

our clenched fists as an

act of resistance and

an act of existence

and then

we breathe

together
