I don't go here (The Pitt fandom) but as a trans man it's just so tired that people treat the concept of a man being pregnant as inherently absurd and hilarious. I know people will say "it's not that deep" but people will also say that about the comedic Man In A Dress trope. It's not "just a joke" when the very reason it lands as "funny" is fundamentally messed up. If it was about a cishet couple nobody would blink twice at pregnancy fic, let alone find it hysterical.
Anyway, people who HAVE to declare how silly and absurd the premise is are really wearing their gender anxieties on their sleeve. Like, the obvious discomfort of needing to go "hahaha that's so weird don't you think that's weird everyone? you all agree with me, right?" - not even just to your mate or your Twitter followers, but in a published article.
The more sincere and emotionally heavy a work is, the more people seem to do it, too. The way straight men would made 'Brokeback Mountain' jokes non-stop because haha gay cowboys. The way slash fiction itself was and still is a joke to many people (and it was far, far worse in the 2000s). Because it's too much of an existential threat to engage with something that threatens to upset your stable sense of gender or sexuality norms, and that anxiety has to be dispelled with humour and ridicule (especially with the social reassurance that other people think it's funny and weird too).
I don't have a clear point I'm just so tired of being surrounded by people's obvious anxieties about gender day in and day out. Tired vs wired: subverting expectations around gender as an avenue for meaningful character exploration instead. Like, the reason they're so weird about it is what makes the premise good and people simply don't have the refined palate to appreciate it.
And I'm sure this writer would've had to seek out the 'weirdest' thing they could find, unless they're being hypocriticial about their own reading habits. The direction they decided to look in says everything about their personal values.
A very kind person linked me to this not-so-kind article where a buzzkill felt the need to shit on Pitt fic writers...
This is how mine was summed up:

So I just want to take the time to tell everyone who writes fic for The Pitt (or any other fandom) that you’re amazing, talented, smart, funny, cool, and brave for sharing your hard work with the rest of the internet. Fans are what make shows possible. Fanworks show everyone how much love, passion, and talent you have. Humans need to tell stories and find communities and share their stories with others, and that is what we do when we participate in fandom. Remember that you are wonderful, and your work is valid.
Please also remember that AO3 allows you to lock your works in various ways if you need to protect yourself from harassment. And alert AO3 if things get bad. They can and will protect you! 🩷 (File an Abuse Report) (Consider comment moderation) (Locking your works)
#I haven't even read fanfic for years but this is still the kind of hill I'm prepared to die on in an instant#but this is basically the same tired dynamic as every other mainstream journalist who's made fun of slash fic#just with the signature gender anxiety of the 2020s as opposed to pure homophobia#replies

saw the guy who is repairing our apartment elevator cross himself while reading something on his ipad which we can only hope relates to his feelings about the pope's death and not his feelings about the state of our elevator

the way buffy the vampire slayer talks about sex is really fucked up. sometimes in a textually and thematically fascinating way. and sometimes just in a misogyny way.

Hey dude. I noticed that you seem to be having a lot of symbolic association with the ouroboros icon and I just wanted to know if you were like. ok. or like, that you're experiencing time linearly and not stuck in an eternal loop of the same events.
