I find it fascinating that people who choose not to have children are generally assumed to feel really strongly about not having children (or even to feel really strongly against children, anyone’s children, in general). I am probably not going to have children, not because I REALLY REALLY HATE the idea of having children, but because I don’t really really love it. Out of all the major decisions I will make in my life, this one is the only irreversible one. I can sell a house, quit a job, divorce a spouse, whatever. I cannot unhave a child. I cannot opt out of being a parent once I become a parent. I can’t even take a step back for the sake of self-care or whatever, or else my child will suffer.

So for me, having children is fuck yes or not at all. The default will be to remain childfree. Having children should be an opt-in decision, not an opt-out one. Until/unless I develop really strong feelings about wanting to have children, I won’t have them, even if that means I never end up having them at all.

imagine being will graham. he got babytrapped by a cannibal. got stabbed twice and shot once in the same shoulder. a woman kissed him and immediately pushed him off a train. got arrested for murder right after waking up so his coworkers had to examine him for evidence while he was still in his boxers. his therapist sent a serial killer to try to murder him. he doesn’t know he’s bisexual. one of the first things someone said to him while meeting him for the first time was “you unstable?”. sleepwalked in his underwear and the police had to drive him home (he has been in his underwear in a police car twice). had sex with a lesbian. hallucinated his male therapist while having sex with a lesbian. paid for sessions with his therapist’s old therapist because he was jealous of her and she slut shamed him and implied that he was emotionally cheating on his wife. he was. a serial killer called him ugly. he threatened to murder a journalist so she put it in her magazine and his boss got mad at him. tried to kiss someone but she rejected him because she wanted to study his brain in a lab because he’s crazy. did all of that for a guy he hadn’t even fucked. lost his dogs in the divorce. sailed to europe for a man. got stabbed, shot, kidnapped, cut, pushed off a train etc in europe. professionally diagnosed empath.
