Thinking about Five after the dust settles, when the apocalypses are finally over, telling himself his family still needs him, when the truth of the matter is that he needs them. He needs them more than he'll ever admit, but he doesn't know how to say it. He doesn't even know how accept it because ever since he was 13, Five's life has never been about him; it's been about his siblings, about getting back to them, about saving them, no matter the cost to himself.

He survived for 45 years, but he never learned how to live. Now he gets to, but he has no idea how to even begin. So he sticks around, haunts the Academy. He tells himself his siblings need him, but they see right through it.

It's Five who needs them. He's needed them for such a long time and now they finally get to be there for him.

I love putting Five through the horrors (soul crushing angst) for the hurt/comfort. I like putting Brisket Five through the horrors (dealing with customers at his job) because I think it's funny.

They are not the same.

coming from someone who mainly writes five's pov, i wish all the characters were secretly old men. gives me an excuse to excessively purple-prose.
